I purchased an X3 in July. I live in Northern CT. Should I buy a set of winter tires or will the original tires get me through the first season?

First, check the condition of your tires, if it's still good, you should be fine when winter comes, if not, you might want to consider getting the all-season tire instead of winter-tire.
