I'm thinking about graduate work out there. What are the good neighborhoods around CMU?

Squirrel Hill???

squirrel hill is very nice, also look into shady side. There's a good amount of bmw's in the area, not a whole lot of active members on here though. We just recently had a small get together.

Pittsburgh is sweet, hope you end up out here! Squirrel Hill is sweet, and so is shady side. Rent can be kind of a pain, depending on your situation. (it's what's kept me commuting to school, as opposed to living in/around Pitt) All in all though, there's a ton of stuff to do down here!

Thanks for the info guys! :) I'd be looking to buy a house and rent the spare rooms. Do you know of any local papers that have good real estate information?

I'm about a 1.5 - 2 years out on pulling the trigger.

The Sunday Post Gazette would be a good start. I just moved from Pittsburgh - Loved it there. All depending where you are deciding to go to school, you may want to look further out for a house (cause they are cheap!).

I'm looking at CMU. It looks like I can get a decent place in Squirrel Hill for just under 300k. I hear the Strip is a cool spot too. Thanks for the info man. :)

How are the roads?

$300K?!?!? You can easily find a nice place for under $150K.

The roads suck. Pittsburgh is the home of Primanti's (Have you been there yet?), the Steelers (pronounced Stillers), and potholes.

No way! The 300k place was a 5 bedroom colonial style brick single family home. When you say 150, are you talking condo?

What's Primanti's?

I think that you could easily get a 3/4 bedroom place for the 150K. The place you are talking about sounds super nice though and it might just be worth the $$$.

Primanti's is a bar / restuarant. They have a very unique, Pittsburgh way of making sandwiches. You gotta go get one as soon as you get into town. There are other food stops you gotta do too.

I think the one thing that you will really like is how easy going people in Pittsburgh are. Most of the time the roads are friendly (you know - people actually don't cut each other off, etc.) and the people are just polite.

Lemme know if you have any more ?'s.

My dads owns a real estate company in shady side and squirel hill. For a nice place in a nice area expect to pay 300. we paid 120 for a place in shady side on walnut street, and the entire thing needed to be gutted and remodled. Howard Hanna is a pretty big real estate company that deals in shady side and squirel hill. If your looking to rent, let me know and I can get you a place. best of luck - adam west

Thanks for the info guys! I'll prolly come out next summer to tour the school and have a look around town. We should put back some beers while I'm out there. If I do end up going to CMU, I doubt I'll bring my M. :(
