I love my wife's 328i and I think it may be time to upgrade my pathfinder to something German.
I am looking at both the X5 and X3. I have a 65 mustang that I might have to tow. (To the body shop, if it breaks, etc.) I can get a much newer X3 within my budget, but I have seen conflicting info on its towing capacity.
The X5 can tow 6k lbs.
I have read that the X3 can tow 3500 lbs and 4500 lbs. Which one is it?
Would you occacionally tow a 2700 lb car with an X3?

I'd hang out until next summer if you can...
The new X5 that seats 7 will be out then...so you can get that or the older X5 for a great price.
The 3.0i X3 can probably tow 3000 lbs.
I'm in a similar situation...except I have the 01 Pathfinder...the 250+hp one...but our issue is family size these days.

That actually was going to be my timeframe for getting and X series. I think the wife will like the X5 a little more.

It's really your call, if you like roomier car in this series, get the 5, if you're looking for newer car then get the 3. Both are beautiful car IMO.

we had a 2004 x5 4.8is at the dealership and i took her on a lil test drive. Holy shit that thing is fast and any push of the throttle gives you a deep muscle car crawl like it means business cuz it does...even though it was used they were asking 50gs+ for it...I think it only had like 9,000 miles on it...don't know the towin capacity or how it stacks up to the 4.4 and 3.0 but it is defiently worth looking into

We will most likely get the 3.0, my wife really doesn't need a v8.

:lol3 Over kill? I think so.
BMW is so cool. 4.8is what a beast
I think you should be fine towing a 2700lb car. But I would op for the X5 any way, its bigger and while your getting an SUV why not get one that will be nice for trips and has some room to spread out. the X5 is more comfortable and looks better IMO.

I have the '05 X3 with 3.0i, and this thing screams! It is a wonderful vehicle; with the space of a SAV, and the guts of a champion. Best part? Just under $30k with about 26k on the clock. Mine doesn't have a frame hitch, but they make them, and I have no doubt that it would tow 2700 pounds every once in a while...but be sure to add your trailer weight...if it's aluminum, you're still adding at least 900 pounds. At that level, you're pushing it, but why not just rent a truck if the tow is only occasional? If you dont' need the extra size and fuel comsumption of the X5, the X3 (mine gets 17 in town and 25 on the road), is a great and sporty alternative. Just thoughts.

I have an ‘01 X5 Loved it for the most part, but after extensive shopping, (and test driving what I think was every non American SUV on the market) I just traded it in for an 07 X3. Don’t look at a 2006 x3. The 2007 X3 is far superior to the 2006’s.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Not needing the 7 seats of the new x5 or the towing capability the X3 is smoother riding, more agile, more fun, and not that much smaller on the inside.
