Check the local area, they're dime-a-dozen around here. E36's may be a better choice for a beater due to newwer/more part availability.

Well, I do have my E30 327i Alpina available. But it´s pretty pricey do to the restauration. New suspension, tranny, brakes, engine completely redone and so on. But if you´re looking for an E36 I think I would have about 50 available choices...

Why would you want an underpowered US spec M3? You're in germany, enjoy it for all it has to offer, this includes the superbly better automobiles. If you're worried about having to bring it back to the states sell it there or find out what you have to do to get in us DOT legal.

I want to take it home. I'll get an M3 here and waste all my money on it and have to sell it. They're too expensive to turn to US Spec, this idea has been beaten to death 100 times. At this point, I'd be happy with any US Spec E36 (coupe), I'd go put the euro engine in it, and call it a day.

Was up in K-town this past weekend, church stuff. Then I mosied on over to Chillis in Ramstein, damn that was a good burger.

Man im really starting to hate chillis. everytime i go there its like a 45min wait it drives me nuts! it seems like some ppl dont even leave base.

Why would you have to leave the base living in Ramstein? That place is humungous you could get lost on the base. We live about a 45 minute drive away so we always call first to see how long the wait is. They have a waiting list for call-ins, they don't do reservations, but it makes it so you don't have to wait forever while you're there.

Was getting on the A5 yesterday in Heidelberg and came right behind a nice red e30 M3. Anyone here driving on the A5 around Heidelberg yesterday at about 18:45?

K, im going to be in Prague, Salzburg, Munich all like next week. We leave for germany with our university bands this sunday. Any germany folk around there that can give me some info. We will have a bunch of free afternoons and evenings.

What is the possibility of me seeing a car factory like BMW or Porsche. I dont know what the taxi fares are...or if there are taxis. But basically they are going to turn us loose a few days and everyone is going to be on foot. If anyone has a car or knows the surrounding area i would be a happy passenger! I kinda want to see a euro M3 too, well there are a lot of things I want to see. I just am terrible about planning trips and where to go so without guidance I will probably just be wandering around and just miss everything. Well here is our iteniary, if anyone knows of any places that I just have to see when Im in an area let me know.

Just got an account on the forum this morning, you H-berg, Stgtt, K-town guys may have seen me arround; Car number "2" (second one delivered) in Europe. 2003 Sterling Grey 2.5 liter fully loaded, lowered, 18' custom Doltz / Dezents all the way arround, and one of the few (if any other) American registered Z's with the full factory equipped aerodynamik (ground effects) kit.. I'm German plated now, like most everybody else but my little Z is pretty easy to recognize..

Oh, I forgot to mention (duh) I'm out of Mannheim...

yeah everything basically is more expensive. the oilchange itself isnt expensive but the oil ! also depends on the oil. but heck work pay was 12$ for the oilchange and the oil costs the same if u buy it and do it yourself or if you get it done. so it comes out to be the same.

My wife is originally from Germany, we have twin daughters, 16mos old, and we decided that while they're still young that we want to give it a try. So i'll be on the lookout for a clean E30 soon...:). Unfortunately, my 97 M3 has to go, but a guy I worked with is buying it so I think it's going to a good home. are you sure it's a 6 cylinder? if it is, does it have one tail pipe or two? if it's the stock exhaust and one exhaust tip, then it's a 320

Welcome! and as for your question, i think s14 put it the right way let us know what else your car has. But if your car states 316/318 and has a 6cyl then i would say someone did a engine swap.

Well it has one on the left, but a dual tip, YES it has a SIX, with the "cover" on top that makes it hard to get to the sparkplugs...
I will look better at the exhust in the morning... I am having a thermostat problem right now.....

Its a good drive. I live close to the middle of you two, and on a good day (which don't happen often) I can get to stuttgart in 1-1.5 hours. Most days it takes 2 hours because of traffic. Then its another hour up to frankfurt, plus the 45ish to where he lives. Its a good drive....

yeah i can get to frankfurt on a good day in around 35 minutes but well figure it out def stay in touch though.

i post everytime i go to the ring on a weekend or weekday so chime in or if you have a date suggestion just post it up for a meet or ring time. also the hockenheim ring has open driving sessions i believe aswell so that might be interesting

To tell you honestly I'm not sure. It's been a long time since I went around it on my rollerblades. I've not been back there with a car or anything since then. A real shame though considering its 5 minutes down the A6 from me.

I would like to get an E30 BUT i'm not to sure about buying an old-er BMW due to reliability/emissions issues. I just moved to Berlin and my US spec e36 325IS will be getting shipped to my place in about a month. One question I have is, How do I swap out my US front license plate holder to a German front license plate holder? As you guys know, the US license plates are way smaller...can I just pop out the US trim and pop in a German license plate holder? Any help would be appreciated...Thanx!

why would you want an ugly US plate? the euro plate flows with the car so much better!

Jpark - just go to the local junk yard and ask for the front bumper trim. E36's are like chevy cavaliers over here so there is bound to be one in any junk yard you go to

Mark - if you buy an E30 from an american it will more than likely be a huge piece of shit! think about it, guys are over here for 2 or 3 years, do you think they want to waste money on a car they can't keep?

So go find a german that you work with, or an american that is in good with the germans, or any BMW fan and tell him that you want a good touring. he should be able to reproduce one for 1-2,000 euro. I'm working with a guy right now to get a limited edition 318 touring for 1100euro:redspot

Well i will be sellin my e30 soon if your intersted. But i would NOT look on ebay most of the cars that are on there are the ones that cant be sold with a straight sale, they are mostly POS. Where i always look for a car is autoscout24.de, I think thats the best place to find one. As for a touring get ready to pay out the a$$ for a good one with low Km's cause most have 200K+ and they are still not cheap. you'll be near k-town so there is a big one on ramstein, and from there just start talking to people and driving around!

the scenery is beautiful. my first month in country i probably drove 3,000klm in the immediate area just to familiarize myself. i found 4 junk yards in that time and 3 so far have been friendly and helpfull.

if you try and muster up even a little bit of horrible german, most germans will appreciate the gesture and be willing to help you out

Thanks guys...but after looking around for a while I found an awesome deal I couldn't pass up. It is nothing special, AT ALL, but as I was going to look at another car in Mannheim I saw a...wait for it...a 1997 Opel Astra Kombi(wagon) 1.6 16v(Ecotec hahahaha), 80km(50k mi), pristine, started/ran/drove beautifully, everything works. It is Brown metallic, but who cares, it's actually more of a 'sand' type of color but I didn't buy it for the color. I got a 2yr/unlimited mileage warranty which is great considering i'll be covering approximately 100km/day round trip which comes out to about 25,000km/yr. But anyway, in a few years when I get settled and making some money, I will be able to get my E46 330i M-tech Touring or 130i or perhaps something better will have come along by then. I'll post pics when I pick it up this coming Friday....lata.

Yes I will be here for a while, as a civilian. My wife grew up here(in this town) and we have twin 19mo old girls and we felt that this was a better place to raise them. And yeah the car is ok, especially seeing as how the Ecotec motor is still being used by GM ten years later(one thing they did right) and there are plenty of them out there so parts should be quite affordable.

No, sorry i dont know anyone selling now, there aren't many of the us spec's around here. I only know of two others and im pretty sure they arent sellin.

And then engine isn't all you'll want. It's got one hell of a gearbox. That being said, both have just over 400000 kms. The engine had some minor sugery though, head gasket, valves...a few things like those...if you're still interrested let me know I can put you in touch with my bro who still lives there.

I was planning to fill up with mid-grade (super) but I accidentally filled up with regular "benzin!"
Now, I fill up with 89 octane is the US...and in the US, "regular" is 87...
So I want to know, did I fill up with 87? Is "benzin" same as 87 octane in the US?

Well, im not a expert but ill give you my take. There is a difference when you fill up off base, they use a different system, but on base 89 octane is 89 octane. So you didnt totally "screw up", if you really are haveing problems with the car running then throw some octane booster in, or in worst case drain the fuel out but i dont think you need to go that far. Just use it up and put a higher grade in. BTW where are you located at?

Thats normal if ppl dont reconize you, or your license plates are from out of town, or in our case completely off the charts wierd they look.

Ok my car just failed the TUf or whatever the inspection is called. I didn't take the car in myself but someone else did. He told me that my suspension failed. It's got one inch lowered sachs stage 1 springs and shocks. Would they fail me for aftermarket parts? they even said my lug nuts weren't matching...WTF!?
and my brakes also failed. I just put on brand new rotors and pads...wtf is going on!!?

Oh damn you have to pass the German TuV? Well that sucks, they are nit-pickers. I think if you dont have the TuV approvel papers then they wont pass it, the TuV papers are like the DOT stamp saying its safe.

ok if you have VA plates, then you registered temp plates with the Pass & ID office on a US installation correct? if yes, then you should take the car to the inspection station on a US installation, not the TUV.

also having miss matching lug nuts? WTF... so all the cars with wheel locks are miss matched, those gonna fail?

the TUV paperwork you are talking about are usually little red slips called ABE papers. This is why it really helps to know the people at your local TUV car inspection.

Im sorry to break this to you, but forget it. I researched this before and it will cost you in upwards of $9,000 to do it. Way more than what that car is worth, exspecialy a 320. Your better off lookin for a US spec or wait till you get back to the states and buy another there.
But if you are willing to spend that much on your car then your best bet is to write a email to your home state DMV asking for help and they can point you in the right direction, thats what I did. I have a website with most of the info you need, just the link is on my work comp. If I remeber Ill try to post it up.

heck i got a '94 USPEC 325is with 140,000 miles. Drives like a champ! I'll sell it in 2 years when I leave Germany. LOL!
