I just bought some used and the rear tires are pretty close to the wear bars, and the fronts are like new. How long do these last, how soft is the rubber when you get close to the bottom?

You should only run winter tires to the half way wear limit, After that, they change into just fair all-season tires. If the rears are close to the wear bars, they are not good for the winter.
