View Full Version : Full Of Rage - bad clutch + track = bad (duh)

So I'm full of rage right now... ok, maybe not so full of rage, but I'm not happy. My clutch is bad, I knew that... makes a LOUD 'whirring' sound when depressed. The hub spring or something is going bad on it. I didn't want to buy a new clutch yet... wanted to make it at least through the winter.

I guess I could always cancel Texas World Speedway... dude hasn't even processed my card yet so it shouldn't be a huge issue. Or, I can order a clutch/ltw flywheel combo from Bimmerworld and install next weel. I HATE when I know what the responsible thing to do is :(

That sucks! Fix that clutch and come out to Hallett! :D

There is a TWS drivers edge weekend on the 9th/10th of December if you really want to hit TWS this year.

Eh, considering when it was time to replace the clutch I was going to upgrade to the BimmerWorld JB Racing ltw flywheel/Clutch Masters Stage I Performance Organic package, I'm probably gonna end up waiting till next year for any type of track fun :(

Sounds like a bad throw-out bearing. Does the clutch still hold well?

sounds like the TO bearing as well..

Throw out bearing sounds right... I "think" the clutch holds well, but either way, after talking to two mechanics (one a personal friend who wouldn't even be doing the work) and having them say don't track it in that condition, I'm not going to take any chances.

The clutch has been acting like this before May... when it was first diagnosed at the end of May, I was basically told ride it out till I can't go anymore, then replace the whole thing. It's senseless to go in there and just replace the bearing.

dropping the transmission isn't that hard. I did it in the pits at Barber in 104* temp on Vern's car. It sucked and I got clutch/brake fluid all over me, but its an easy 1/2 day job. Just replace the TO bearing, make the track days this year.

Time willing, I'll even come over there and help you with the transmission dropping. Besides that your car and mine would make a cool black and white picture. and then get a negative. Pretty much look the same except for the color.

You think??? Everyone I talked to said just replace the whole thing and simply wait till the bearing goes. At this point I doubt I'll be hitting the track, but if it really is that easy to fix and will provide insurance on the clutch for a few thousand more miles, I'd really appreciate the help. Then we can get that picture :)

i did mine in a total of 11 hours..."first time doing a clutch job on a bimmer and not a UHAUL truck". shouldnt be too hard. the tranny drop was the hardest part IMO since there is little room to work with. but now i found out that there were two mounts we couldve loosened to help out the process even faster so look into that!!! question though..i did my clutch back in january of this year.....now at idle..i get this lil squeeling sound, and when i put the clutch pedal in..it goes away...what is that? its not the TOB cuz i did a whole clutch kit..and it shoudl all be good.

Hey I dont know if you've fixed this yet, but I would suggest an Aasko ltw fly, with a stock sach's clutch. It's an awesome combo, little chatter unless the a/c is on. I've heard of problems with uuc's fly's and the shops here wont even use them. Drive it out to vegas we'll get the crew to work on it, it'll be the 3rd clutch/fly we've done, we're almost pros now!! LOL

Haven't fixed yet and not going UUC. When the time comes, I'm going with Bimmerworld's combo.
