View Full Version : How you like my $60 paint job mang?
I finished painting the 240 a while ago, finally snapped some pics. It was actually raining lightly when I took the pics, so the low light made things a little fuzzy. The color is Rustoleum Safety Red and Gloss Black... yes, I rolled the paint on in my garage. :alright

What I really like about the car...

Teaguer 10-27-2006, 09:35 PM Props mang that is looking pretty f'ing dapper .
What wheels are those ?
No hassle from the fuzz for lack of ft blinkers ?
Greg S 10-27-2006, 09:38 PM Nice, we were talking about roll on rustoleum last night at the meet.
I need to get some front blinkers, but taking out the pass. one is how I get air to my oil cooler, so since I won't have one in that side for track use I've been slacking. The front bumper is a different one than came on the car, so I don't have stock lights to use. Plus the car isn't exactly street legal in more than one way...
The wheels are 17x9 and 17x10 5Zigen FN01R-C's.
Rolling on the paint wasn't really hard at all, and it was easy just to put in 30 mins here, an hour here etc. since you don't have to mask much off. It did take a bit of time tho'.. don't think I'd do it on another car, but it was fun for the most part.
jermattak 10-27-2006, 10:01 PM good lookin cars, dig it with the rims
SecretAznSauce 10-27-2006, 10:52 PM you know, ppg omni paint would had been the same price
The paint was about $15 total. That's the total price for all supplies it took to do it. Just took an hour here or there. I'm not saying it didn't take time, but it'd take a lot of time to setup a paint booth type deal in my garage and mask off most the car as well. I prepped the car in about an hour then started painting.
Plus it's mad easy to touch up, which is kinda what I'm looking for with the car.
hinzm3 10-28-2006, 02:10 AM i've seen the car in person and watched him roll that shit on, I was very surprised with the results! It came out pretty damn good. Perfect for a track/street car
A ///Monster 10-28-2006, 02:19 AM Nice.... I went the other way with my project 240. Primer black is definately not the way to go. I went though about $60 in Duplicolor rattle cans. The results were ok, not as bad as I thought they might be. I'll probably pay to have the car painted professionally some day, but not right now.

Well, don't ever expect it to look show quality or anything like that. It's definitely a 3 ft paint job. Standing a few ft away from it, it looks pretty good, get real close and you can see little remains of orange peel and swirls from the wetsanding. Most of that is just that I didn't feel like taking the extra 5 hrs or so to completely go over the car once more, since it looks good enough for me(the stock paint was horrid on the bumpers and had lots of bad scrapes and whatnot).
Basically - get some enamel Rustoleum paint from Home Depot/Lowes. I went with the Rustoleum Professional, but I hear the "Stops Rust" that Home Depot sells works well too.
Get a gallon of mineral spirits.
Get some high density polyurethane rollers(I used 4" widths).
Get lots of sand paper.
Prep the surface by hitting it with 400-600 grit paper. I didn't notice much of a difference between the two, and 400 is faster so I used that the most. Clean it off with mineral spirits and let it dry(15 mins or so).
An important part is thinning the paint out. In my experience, you want to put in about 1 part mineral spirit for about 5-8 parts paint. It's hard to really gauge it by volumes, so I just used the viscosity of the paint. You want it a hair thicker than water. So you can move the pan around and have it freely move, but not so thin that it's just sloshing all over the place. I also found it good to let the paint sit for at least 10 mins after mixing it since it seems to be much more consistent after that.
Start rolling after masking off anything you see the need to.
You can put another coat on after about 2 hours in my experience, depending on outside conditions. If your garage or whatever is a bit cold, then maybe wait another hour.
2 coats, wetsand with 400/600 to get out the orange peel. For some reason the first two coats always orange peel badly from what I saw. Don't go crazy wetsanding, you just want to roughly smooth out the surface.
Make sure surface is clean and dry(a little mineral spirits get off excess dust), and put on more coats.
I varied it up from here and got good results with both processes...
Either 2 more coats, 600 grit wetsand. Then another 2 coats, 600 grit then 1000/2000 grit wetsand. Or just 4 more coats then 600 and 1000/2000 grit wetsand. The 2000 step is optional since I didn't notice much of a difference between stopping with 1000 or going to 2000. It won't shine at this point, but don't freak out.
Buff with your favorite compound then wax.
The paint goes on thin, so you need to put a few coats on. It's really pretty easy though, since you can put a coat or two on after work relatively quickly.
It's also important not to put too much paint on in any one coat. I had a problem with this at the start. Basically go over the surface with roller for at least a few minutes with each dip in the paint tub. You want to really work the paint around so you aren't going to get drips or puddles. Puddles will get an air bubble in them and "pop" when drying, and drips are just PITA to really get out with wetsanding. Some bubbles in the paint are ok while rolling it on, as they'll level out, but if you have excessive amounts, put some more paint on the roller and lightly skim the surface to get rid of them.
It's kinda one of those things you have to feel. Rattle bombing the car could give similar results lookwise IMO, maybe not quite as even due to the inevitable runs or roughness, but the Rustoleum paint is pretty tough and durable. It seems to get even tougher with a thinning agent as well.
I painted my new intake manifold with a rattle can, and the finish is reasonably shiny and even, but it's not near as durable.
It's a decent amount of work, but the advantage over a cheap spray of the car is I can easily paint something like another bumper or new fenders if I bust it up, or touch up parts that I stupidly f up like dragging big ass braided hose across the fender(whoops).
