hey guys I would love to come to a meet too and I am sure my brother would to. Hey I have a question for you guys I hope someone will be able to help me. I was just in Europe recently and it sucked not having my car, so for next summer I was planing to transporting my car down to Croatia (adriatic sea) or at least to germany or Italy if that would be easier. I was told that I could not transfer my car if it is not paid off. Do you guys know anything about that, and where could I found out how much it would cost me and how long it will take for my car to get there if I am able to transport it.
Thanks Ivana!

Hey, I'd be down for a meet I just need to change a few things on the old cabrio first ;) . Which reminds me....

Deez, All I get is joshs voice mail, he says they will be in and out of the shop for like a month so I would assume that means I won't be getting in contact with him. But I did call him, Maybe sometime next week I will see if can stop at his shop. lol, Does he have a shop?

Back to the meet situation, We should have it before the snow starts to fall. Although the cabrio is still pretty fun in the snow :devillook . Where would you guys wanna meet? I mean you are all in Ann Arbor area, a little ways away, so would you guys be willing to travel a wee distance? :cool

DEEZ - Whats up, I was wondering if you could shed some of your knowledge for me.
I have those a-pillar gauges with the oil temp and air/fuel.
There not hooked up of course, and im wondering exactly how I should go about doing this, what I need, and maybe an idea of how much a shop would charge to install this, just incase I dont have time or if weldings required, because I think its a good idea to run another o2 sensor? Thanks man.

what do you have to do to get on to the tracks around here?.. i've never been to the track with my car before, so.. to my understanding you can't have tinted windows on the track. is that true for the tracks near ann arbor?.. is there anyone around here that has a e36 turbo m3?? or any wide body m3's...

LittleBlueBMW
09-21-2005, 11:23 PM
Eric (EMC) just sold his turbo M3.

I wasn't aware of any tint regulations since you have to keep your windows rolled down while on the track.

On the track, street legal ok, no mechanical problems, no covertibles, and typically pass a pre-track inspection.

Anyone have an SRS Airbag reset tool? I put the airbag steering wheel back on my car and the light is still on. This sucks. I don't really feel like spending $120 on the tool, and refuse to take the car to the dealer.

They were hooked up already at one point. The wires probably didn't get reconnected when the motor was replaced I am guessing. I could proly pop by and see if I can find the break in the wires. If I remember correctly I think I might have hooked those up myself........

Anybody do a chain tensioner replacement? I've got one looking at me, got a decent price on parts (upper and lower chain cover gaskets, valve gaskets and the tensioner itself, $100 out the door).

If anybody's done this in the G.R. area, I'd love to have some advice/input/help?

Unfortunately, it will probably be 5 times the cost of the parts for the labor to do the job. That's one job that doesn't sound fun. I'm pretty sure you have to pull the oil pan, crank pulley, valve cover, etc....and the radiator will probably need to be pulled for access. The front timing chain cover is not a fun thing to pull when the motor is in the car.

But...are you replacing the timing chain too? What exactly is the problem? Maybe I'm thinking you are pulling more than you actually are. It's still going to be a lot of work just to pull the front cover.

Yah I agree. I had to swap mine out (just the tensioners) and it was a pain in the ass in the car. Not to mention you have to redo the timing as well at the end of it all. Radiator had to come out, fan shroud ect. We didn't have to take the crank pulley off for just the tensioners or the oil pan but it was still alot of work.

So ya...when is everyone meeting up? I really want to check out everyones car. I went and took some photos today with my friends Si and we parked next to the comstock body shops mini cooper. HAHA supposidly his car is a '92 but the state of michigan htinks its a 72 because supposidly there are millions of vins that they can use and most are fake from old crashed mini's but he has a 72 vin on his 92 mini. It was right hand drive and everything, it was sooo cool. Anywaiz lol sorry about my rambling just wanted to stop by the thread

I just want to change the primary tensioner, that's all. I was hoping (in theory) that I could just get away with yanking the valvecover and swapping the part out. Dealership says that I have to do the whole frigging timing thingiemabob. I would like to disagree.

Why am I doing this? Because at around 1300 rpm I get a metal scraping sound from the front of the engine. Search and questions of my mechanic friends says that this is a worn out chain tensioner- not an uncommon problem with our cars.

I'm going to spend more time on search for this diy, and talk to some more people. If I have to yank the chain then I'll probably go for broke and get a lot of other shit done too (head job, oil pump nut, solid lifters, better pistons and some cams, etc.). I just topped 100k today (yea!) and I've got a credit card that says my NA engine will be fun. Or perhaps if I can find a reasonable SC system. Would love turbo, but it's too much work, maintenance and daily driver hassles with the amount of milage that I do.

Thats exactly why I had to change mine. I had that nasty noise as well. You should have seen my old tensioner!! I wouldn't wait to long to do it, I kept putting it off and my old tensioner had a groove grinded in it from the chain/guard. Another month and i would have toasted the motor.

Its already broken in. Its been in the streets of GR for a few months now. I've been trying to get the dyno done, but the dude who runs the dyno never calls back or answers his phone. So I pull out my oil gauge from the a-pillar just to see if the wires are still connected. turn on my car with the other hand. BAM got a shock through my hand from the gauge, the power turns off to them, and my whole car fills with smoke that smells like burnt plastic.

Ubertino
09-25-2005, 11:20 PM
DRC- I'm not an expert, but from personal experience that didn't involve a car, often times that's the insulation on the wire melting and making the smell, and smoke if you see it. I would check that wire and the ones that meet up with and run parallel to it to make sure that none of the other ones are melted or in other ways abused. If they're not, and everything works like it should, then you're in groovy shape. Otherwise, well, shit. I can't help you there.

Ali- I've lived in London/Paris/Aix en Provence/Detroit and Hartland (if you know where that is, I'm impressed) and been a good many other places. For cost of living, good times on the town, access to other large cities and travel facilities, there is not other city the same size as G.R. that offers better. I don't know if Josh lives here or not, but there is more to life then big cities and fast living. Or at least big cities. Oh, and we're 1 hour from Gingerman, and 1 hour from Grattan. Not too many places on the map that are that close to two nationally respected tracks, plus proximity to the 96 Speedway, Chicago and Indy. That all said, this city sucks if you're under 21.

Philly (Josh?)- I'll ask my guy about some local Dyno's if you're interested. I know a couple people into cars around here who own shops, somebody will have the dyno and professionalism that's appropriate. If I may be so rude, where is this shop that did the mods located, and may I, please, see your car in person? I can bribe with company+beer/coffee/beverage preference (JW Gold Label?)?

Dude I am so pumped to get the swap finished and finally have the car running half way decent. Josh i appreciate all your patience and work to help me get this project started. So with a new engine, tranny, and the chip already in the ECU, what happens next guys?

I am thinking along the lines of suspension koni yellows and i.e. Springs? We will see. Although it is kind of a sad day for me, with the purchase of all this new stuff...I have to get rid of my 04 Sentra SE-R Spec V. :( . I wanted that car ever since it was released in early 2002, then finally in spring of 2004 I convinced my dad to buy the car and now, well, Bye bye spec v. Ohwell, Just means i have to pour the extra 4k into the e30 :evil2.

So anyone planning any new mods?

Dude, I think I might have seen you. There's a silver M3 that I'm starting to see everywhere... Mine is cosmos black with the dumbest 18 inch 'racing' rims ever. The previous owner got them, I have no idea why, since there's no bbk. No point in having big wheels with no bbk. If anybody has some nice 17" wheels that wants to trade for some Racing Hart C2's (they're actually nice, but not my style) lemme know.

Philly- if you're still around I'd love to see your ride before it goes bye bye for the winter.

What?
you shouldn't be ticking. Does it go away once the car is warmed up?

Ubertino
10-22-2005, 01:20 PM
Mine ticks when it turns over in the morning for the first time, usually goes away in 5-15 seconds or so. There's still a bit of lifter noise when it cold out (you've gotta be listening for it), even when the engine is warm, but after looking through all the threads, it's quite common, nobody seems to have a fix other then to use lots more oil or replace the lifters.

DRC10
10-22-2005, 03:46 PM
Ya this is a big tick/clicking sound. Im thinking its has something to do with the chain tensior, the noise comes from the silver cover in the front of the engine. It does not sound like the vanos marbles, just a click, but its very loud now, and doesnt go away.
Somehow I know Deez is gonna know this........

Ubertino
10-22-2005, 11:28 PM
I'm gonna do the primary tensioner, since I have the 32mm deep socket. Got it with a cheap impact socket set that I paid $18 for from one of those Harbor Freight companies, best thing I ever purchased.

The secondary one under the valve cover I'm gonna do too, since I need a new valve cover gasket, but I'm trying to figure out if I can do this without taking out the vanos unit. I really really really don't want to have to take out the vanos unit and fart with aligning the bastard and all that.

DRC- the primary tensioner is usually around $70 or so, plus or minus. I'm gonna check to make sure that my 32mm socket fits. If it does, when I do mine I'll shout out and we can do yours if it's in the cards.

DRC10
10-23-2005, 03:21 AM
cool, does what I describe, sound like the tensor to you? I gotta know for sure before I spend money.

Ubertino
10-23-2005, 01:41 PM
From my mechanic who I talked to, and everything that I've read online, it's gotta be the secondary chain tensioner. Also, the 95 m3's have an older version of the primary tensioner that I'm going to replace as well. Just because. Both are jobs that I have no problem doing, but the secondary tensioner might require me to take off one of the cam chains and sprockets in addition to the vanos. I'm really hoping that this is not the case. Anything that can monkey with my timing is b-a-d bad. If you have the grinding sound, especially on the down rev, that's the tensioner- just blip the throttle from the engine to determine. If you hear a marble filled can/noise thing on the engine brake (downrev in gear) at all the rpm's then you probably have a bad vanos selinoid. The actual physical unit doesn't really go bad that often, it's a pretty simple device. Truthfully, the selinoid doesn't go bad, it just stops being as powerful, thus not engaging the vanos gearing properly.

DeezBMW
10-23-2005, 02:38 PM
Is it a rattle type noise that you can find at a certain rpm range? Meaning, can you rev the car up to a certain (usually lower) rpm and hear the noise or feel it at the front of the valve cover?

LittleBlueBMW

Updated pics of my ride.

The hell run was ok. Too bad we went on the dirt roads.I bent one of those PG2's while going the speed limit.

Installing X brace today and brake lines and flush in the next couple of weeks.

DRC10
10-23-2005, 04:32 PM
The noise starts as soon as you start the car, its well noticable. From there it just gets louder and "faster" and you raise the rpm's.Like I said before, its more of a clicking sound, not the vanos marbles, theres no marble sounds when let off the gas.I guess the sounds kinda like when people put baseball cards in there bike spokes.

Ubertino
10-23-2005, 05:13 PM
Mine is a rattling noise that is there for the first few seconds the car is turned over when cold, then goes away. Comes back only around 1200 rpm or so. You can only hear it when you down rev. Sounds like the timing chain is hitting the valve cover, but my mechanic says that it's slapping the tensioner.

Sounds like mine is definitly different then DRC.

Deez- I do believe that we've talked about this before. I just have to order the parts, and figure out if I'm going to diy or monkey with a mechanic.

The good - Took the interior out of my car today for a good cleaning. Then took a rode trip, damn this this handles better. I think im going to invest in some weight savings.

The Bad- I notice a faint red sqaure light outline in my cluster. The one farthest to the right. If this is the check engine light, The son of a bitch I bought the car from colored over it from the inside to mask it. It may be a seat belt like since I detached the passanger side wires when removing the seat. Because it has never come on before, or I just never noticed it. I can only hope. Airbag light could be just the driver side seat belt buckle having a bad sensor. Not an uncommon problem. Unfortunatly there are plenty of other things that could be wrong, so a trip to somebody with the right electronics is going to be the only way to go.

Ubertino
10-26-2005, 08:03 PM
DRC- If your oil is doing this, do an oil change, then you know for sure what the condition of the oil is in. These cars get lots of lifter noise when the oil is low. Not to uncommon for people do run 1/2-1 quart more then spec.

The red light on the far left is the airbag warning light. You'd have to take it to the dealership to get the codes or somebody with that magic tool that you're having so much fun with.

Proof of sale would be a copy of the check/money order that you wrote, a copy of the old title that you might have made, the application for a title would come in useful. If nothing else, if you don't have a regular friendly lawyer, then call legal aid and ask some questions.

And last, have Deez personally look at your car, or the shop he does work with in Holland. Get a deep real inspection of the whole kit and kaboodle. Then you'll know what you've got to work with, and can prioritize your spending and time. I've got one of those lists, and stuff just keeps on coming on and off. These cars are maintenance intensive, most especially when you're around the 80-100k mark. Lots of things to look at. I'm getting most everything myself, although this timing tensioner might be a shop job. Unless Deez is willing to come and help. Hint. Hint. Hint. :rolleyes

I dont wanna throw any prices out there because he might now wanna tell everyone. But if you like you can pm me or deez and i can give you his info.

Phillym5- That's pretty sweet, are they concentrating on just eclipse/talons or are the open to anything? Sounds like it could be a cool place to go and see some of the "better" cars GR has to offer. Although I don't need a mechanic because jones is taking pretty good care of me, but none-the-less it could be a cool place to meet some more people.

BTW anybody have any pictures or movies for me?

Everyone,
I picked up a set of Michelin Arctic Alpin snow tires for a 3-series this weekend. They fit 16" wheels and have a lot of tread on them. They were used for one winter (last year only).
I paid $100 for the set of 4 tires. Looking to get the same. I don't need them, but I figured someone here might. You are welcome to pick them up at my house in Livonia. I can probably drop them off in Grand Rapids on my way through in a week or so if someone up that way is interested.

I dont know your budget or what you currently have done to the car, but might i suddgest suspension. lol That's the answer i usually see around the bmw community. Next of course is a chip, after that well, exhaust and maybe intake(not to knowledgeable on 5series cars), but thats where you should probably start. Oh and get some sweet snow tires for winter:D . For the most part suspension, chip, and exhuast will yeild the most fun to drive factor. I don't really know any other great advice. hehe Hope it helps.

Btw what happened with the whole importation/exportation of the car. Did the guys at that place i sent you a while back help at all?

I used to have a 540. I can tell you what to get and what not to get. I went through it ALL!! Im on my 4th 5 series right now.

1. suspension
2. short shift(if you have a stick)
3. exhaust(have to get rid of the resonator)
4. wheels

those are the must do.

next is chip, intake, bumper/splitter,supercharger....etc.

I do have a stick, and I was thinking about the shorshifter, but that would affect my warranty on my transmission. I will go tomorrow and look for pipes for my catback exhaust, and hopefully I will start working on it tomorrow. The secound thing would be my suspension ( I am thinking HR should be fine), the wheels I will problebly do after winter ( I am thinking BBS), now I have 17", but I will change to 18" or maybe 19". Either I will get a M5 front bumper or just an add on lip....etc. What really bothers me is my orange corners, I would love them to be clears, but I dont want to change my whole headlights , and I am kind of afraid to take them appart.
But pm me with your e-mail or cell # so that if I get stuck on something I have a guy with experience to ask. Thanks for all the ideas.

You can buy the whole light housing. Its more expensive but real easy to install. On the exhaust, a Remus muffler is perfect. Its loud enough to be raw, but not crazy.its pretty cheap too. Also, you can just have a muffler shop make you a pipe to go from the cats to the muffler. Its real easy and sounds SICK.

i'm a new guy and i don't know how things are run in Michigan, but since it seems that most people around the forumn don't drive x5's or x3's. i figured that we should try to get in one bimmerforumns meet in before winter sets in... like i said i'm new to the michigan area so.. the locations is open to me. the lansing area seems like the middle ground.. anyways who's up for a meet before we put our cars into winter mode... the time is for anyone else to be set, but for "the winters sake" who is up next saturday. if anyone has a proplem, post and argue for two sat from now or a sunday... anyways, i'm leaving this as an open meet for michigan folks to go to in which a time and place is to be determined. if it be a small ann arbor meet than that's what is to come but i'm hoping for a general meet of bmw enthusiasts.. i prefer a meet and small drive...

alright, seems that the right thing to do is to make the meet in the middle ground of lansing, since we have a few grandrapids people. unfortuantely i have never been to lansing so i cannot suggest a meeting place, so if someone could suggest something, would be benificial... if need be i'll find something.. as for the time, i say maybe 2 or 3 since most will have to drive to lansing. as of right now, it seems that the upcomming sat is the day that seem to be the best for all.. also since it's a middle ground meet , i don't believe a drive is in the plans. maybe the grand rapids people will meet up and drive over together and same for other places..

jerseym3
11-07-2005, 05:11 PM
i did most of my engine mods at the same time, so... but yea the euro hfm would help. just looked on bimmerworld and the euro kit is..
* Conforti shielded cold air intake
* Euro HFM
* Conforti chip
* All instructions and hardware
good upgrade but i wouldn't pay 1k for these parts. the hfm is in the 250's range if i remember. as for an intake. i pieced one together and it cost me 150 instead of 350 which most complete kits cost. i got a ecis intake shield and also a euro k&n air filter (50 bucks each), then i had an intake kit off of ebay (first thing i bought when i got my car, was 17 so...) where i used the 3.5 piping and rubber boots to put everything together. as for the chip, i would understand what your going to do as for engine mods first, bc if you go with cams ect then you will need a different chip... so i'd say you can get the main parts of the euro hfm kit for in the area of 400 bucks, if i remember correctly you don't need a chip to install a euro hfm...

another stupid question.

I've been away from the forum for a while, it's been a busy week for work. On Saturday I've gotta be in Detroit, for mom's birthday. But depending on what time the people are all meeting up, I'd love to try and cross paths.

It is this Saturday, right? Or am I wrong?

Ivana- we have got to get together at Kava for some coffee sometime. I'm free most nights by nine or so. Not sure what your schedule is.

Ta for now-

3. For sure, not tome obligation
4. My brother (Hexexe) for sure
we might bring a few friends too

Adem, well sms me when you feel like coffee, last time I went to the Kava house and you werent there. I will have to take you to the Adriatic too sometime. Ohh and yest it is this saturday, we (GR people) are planing on driving there together. I dont really care about the time and we have not settled the time yet. The only suggestion so far was to meet in Lansing at 5, which means we should meet here in GR at 4. Let me know if you want to come.

No way that I can make it. Dinner with mom is at 4 in detroit.

Um, if you guys are there by five in Lansing, it's going to be getting about darkish. Not that I could still make it, but if you do something a bit earlier there'll be more light.

Car is in the bodyshop right now, getting the driver side repainted. Somebody took a screwdriver to it in Kent City. Gotta love the country. I'll shoot the rims when it's back, and see if anybody wants to do something with them.

Anybody own a red M3 (e36) that was on Wealthy this evening?

ughhhhh that sucks Adem, sorry about your car. You know you are right about the dark. To me it really does not matter, we could even meet at 1 pm if people are up for it. But the way ot goes they cant make up their mind's.

hahahah, ohhh geeze sorry Jason, but np for the corners I did not need them anyways anymore. Ohhh if somebody needs orange corners for E46 325i, and bulbs, and sidemarkers, you are more then welcome to have them. I still have them from when I changed clears on my e46, they are allmost new.
Ok so for now we are meeting at Eastwood town center in Lanising at 2pm, which means we are meeting here in GR at 1pm at 28th street and east beltline at dunkin donats parking lot. Now who the hell is coming????

how late are you planning on staying out in Lansing? I will be coming from Brighton, and if you'll still be in Lansing, I will meet up for sure... just depends on time. I might have to pull the beast out of it's temporary slumber and stretch Leisle's (my beast) legs out for a bit! ;)

when do you think you could be in Lansing TireFryer

TireFryer
11-10-2005, 02:06 PM
I would guesstimate about 630'ish or so. I have some business loose ends to wrap up so I have to be back in Lansing (wifey poo' and kids will be staying back in Brighton with her folks for the evening to visit as they are moving to Traverse City).

11-10-2005, 02:19 PM
well looks like there is nothing going to be with that meet anyways because for right now its just jerseym3, me and my brother that is able to meet.
Jerseym3- where are you from?

TireFryer
11-10-2005, 02:29 PM
that's kinda bummer! hey, I am sure GR gets old after a while...so make the trip to Lansing anyways, and treat yourselves to a great dinner at one of the eateries @ Eastwood Mall.

Besides, if you hang out till about 10'ish, you can cruise the "GUT"! mostly older classics and muscle cars, but rust bucket projects abound aplenty as well...kinda funny!

11-10-2005, 02:48 PM
Ohhh i am in Lansing often. And I go to detroit a lot too. I like Eastwood Mall, b/c it is an open mall and you can walk ouside.

Is this meeting going to take place at all, b/c so far it does not seem like we are making any progress.
Does anyone know where I can get downpipes and a new exhaust for my 2002 540i, wherever I checked they either dont have it at all or just carry it for 3 series. Thanks

jerseym3
11-10-2005, 10:10 PM
sweetpoison, i don't see a need to meet if it's just you, me and your brother. no offense to either of you, just not that many people to really call it a meet...

Ivana- If you want my mechanic can probably hook you up with someone to make a custom exhaust. You can even buy the mufflers and stuff from him. I would assume that dinan might have some parts for you(they will probably rape you on price), but if you want I can give you the number for my mechanic. He's awesome, he's doing my 5speed swap and mostlikely other things when I get them. And he's real reasonable. PM me if you want his info.

Now regarding the meet. It looks like its gonna be just us few members and some of your friends so maybe we can try again later.:( . And to all you guys who are storing your bimmers for the winter:nono . We should have a winter meet, go buy some snow tires and we'll tear up the back parking lots. We did it all last winter in my friends new Si and the crv(with bald all seasons and no abs).

Moral of the story we need to have a meet again, even if its in the snow;) .

btw do any of you guys have cross-drilled or slotted rotors? i'm trying to decide to go with either slotted or just brembo blanks

Ubertino
11-12-2005, 02:03 PM
Blanks. Do a search on the autocross/track forum, and it's pretty much a solid opinion. It all comes down to physics, more surface area means more stability and contact for heat dissipation. Drilled is only good if you don't have any kind of brake cooling system, same with slotted. Pro cars will run drilled, but they're cryo'd and made out of materials that we could never afford or dream of. For any kind of street/track application, blank is the way to go.

For the cost difference you're better off getting floating roators (euro) with a good brake ducts system and super blue fluid.

But do a search, start a thread, see what they have to say.

The Racing Hart C2 rims that I've got. Five of them, four with Pirrelli P-Zero's that are starting to get a little low, fifth with no rubber. They're in decent shape, but before any trades I'd see them in person. I'm looking for something a bit more oem, straight up trade unless there's a significant rubber difference, then I'll obviously pay more if they're more patch.

Anybody's interested, just let me know, on the forum, pm or email.

Ivana, if you or your brother are interested....

ali//325i, what is the website that you are working on... if you don't mind post a link to the website or something...

Ali//325i
11-18-2005, 06:25 PM
jerseym3- well the 2 "finished" websites i have are... www.nmci-medicalclinic.com and www.bruynhomes.com . They are just basic html pages. I am a computer programmer/web designer/CG artist. I am in no way to the point at which i can call myself GREAT, but Me and my partner are good. We are currently working on our own promotional site for our company, Celerity Web Design, and on a website for my mechanic, who owns street performace racing. Both sites are in developement stages. The promotional website is going to take a while to finish because of the extensive flash use and only having 2 designers, 16 yrs old (my self) and 17 yrs old (my partner), having school, and having other jobs as well lol. But street performance racing's new site should be done within a few days. Have some bugs to work out and some more pictures from deez as well as the mechanic himself. If you would like though i can send you some of the files so you can take a look at them. *Be warned*: It is a large file lol.

Deez- My email adress is this.last.goodbye@gmail.com . Man josh is having some bad luck lately, I feel bad for him.

Ivana- Are you still thinking about that exhaust for your car? If so, I will most likely have to go out to the shop sometime next week if you wanna meet me there I can introduce you to josh and he will probably take a look at your car inbetween finishing mine up, He should be able to quote you a price and stuff. Let me know.

BTW how is everyones BMW doing in the snow:stickoutt .

DC- do you have one of those plates that have the wildlife stuff on it, with the no. beginning with an A? Might have seen you around town...

I LOVE the snow. I have my pilot alpines on, and the car is better then my truck in the snow- it's all about traction. A note, our BMW's with snow tires will out stop any all wheel drive car or 4x4 truck with all season tires. It's great. And when the weather gets really bad, I'll just throw a few hundred pounds in the trunk and call it kosher.

When I had my first bmw without winter shoes... I couldn't make it up the driveway, let alone on the street. It was some funny stuff... I had to back my car up hills. Got interesting looks from people when I was doing that.
