LittleBlueBMW 06-29-2005, 04:25 PM Littlebluebmw I may be able to help you install your shifter, I just installed mine a couple weeks ago and it wasnt to hard, just a pain to work in the tight spaces.
Help is always appreciated. Now to get that wrench that is small enough to pull the fan....
Ubertino 06-29-2005, 10:20 PM *Head explodes with flurry of new posts* I go out of town for one, ONE weekend and some change to do some work in Indiana, and suddenly Summlov's ex has hemroids, people are talking about fraternizing with the subaru people, eurowerks is AWOL, and something about a manual tranny swap? Erm, perhaps a new car would be easier? :rolleyes
DC- Since euro is not there for some reason, I'll try and pop by and find out what digs. In the meantime there is a nice man named Chris Curless who is great on mods and racing motors, runs Curless Auto Repair Services, on LaGrave just by Wealthy, can't miss it, a big shop. This guy does all kinds of silly projects, and is in the midst of taking a winston cup winner motor into a custom dragster. Should be interesting. His number is 616-988-1315. I talked to him yesterday and he's out of town until Tuesday. They don't specialize on BMW's, but they're competent.
GINGERMAN- I need to go soon. Anybody wants to go there or Grattan (they have open nights too, right?) just let me know. EMAIL ME!!!! Or pm me and I'll give you my phone number. I work only some of the time (self employed, so the hours are when I make them) so I've always got time for a cold drink and some work on the car.
Summer- one of my good friends is not only albanian, but his mom is like the queen of the country- she's the woman in charge of the ministry of the interior and infrastructure or something like that. Very funny story. Don't talk to your boyfriend. And find a manual tranny attatched to an m3 motor :D
LittleBlueBMW 06-29-2005, 10:27 PM I'd be down for open lapping at the track, it is an addiction.
Ubertino 06-29-2005, 10:33 PM I know that Gingerman is supposed to have open track tues-thurs nights, but I haven't checked it out yet. It's in Grand haven, a bit of a hike from Dtown, but like you said, it's an addiction...

DSrugis 06-30-2005, 12:05 AM If someone sets up a night at Gingerman for Tuesday or Thursday, I would be in. Just let me know the date ahead of time and I will take a half at work. What are the hours they are open from and how much is it? What do they do for vehicle inspection? I really need to get to the track.
Dave
LittleBlueBMW 06-30-2005, 08:07 AM Someone set this up so I don't have to. Open track time .... so good.

nitestalker 06-30-2005, 11:08 AM gingerman has a porsh event this weekend, but they are usually open to others for test/tune. call them up!

It's every Tuesday. If I remember right, it was supposed to rain on Tuesday, so I didn't head out there. Next week....maybe after the bmw club meeting...although I'd rather go to BW3's
LittleBlueBMW 07-07-2005, 04:34 PM Hmm Band rehearsal or M meeting/Bw3's? What is a girl to do?
Anyone have their E36 exhaust laying around that I might borrow? My cats should be here soon and I wanna get some parts on the car.

Good luck with the car wash, if I had a clue where anything was in MI I would check it out, but I don't, ha!
So any of you going to be at the BMW gathering on the 12th, I really don't know anyone and would like to maybe know some names when I showed up and fill me in about the area a bit, I am not use to not knowing more that two people.
Here is a pic of my M3 on the way to Indy...

Can someone bring a video camera tonight to Shilla's in Canton? I'd like to get some videos and such. I know Perry isn't embarrassed to do donuts in a parking lot with his E46 M3...so...maybe we can get some friendly on road comparisons on video?
Whoever brings the camera can be the passenger. I've also got a camera mount in case you can't hold it too steady.
Thanks!
Maybe we can get some video at BW3 afterwards. There have got to be some STi's that want to beat up on a bmw....and I-96 is just too close to pass ignore.
Ralliart 07-12-2005, 09:22 AM What time are people going to Shilla's?

Jeff, you are such a wuss! :)
I hope everyone had fun. Too bad it wasn't like 70 degrees outside. The car has much more pep when its cooler. Taking out like 300lbs in passengers is also like making another 50hp. I know I can sure tell a difference. ha ha.
LittleBlueBMW 07-13-2005, 11:53 AM Good to see you guys again.
We can arrange another meet for the 23rd or 30th. Anyone in?

OK, I just got out of it! The purchase agreement had a stipulation stating that if the inspection uncovered an unsatisfactory condition of the house, I could:
1) object about it and get the owner to repair it
2) object and ask for monetary compesation
3) object and null the agreement, returning any monies in escrow for deposit, etc.
I opted for 3. There just semed to be too many shortcuts for my liking. The house was beutiful and proably worth it, but I'm not the guy to take it on.
Luckily I was able to get it done before the 10 day period :redspot
So anyone got something 30 mins from CTC (or Waterford Hills!!) with either a 3 car garage or a walk out basement and wanna sell? Hehehe...
And lets all get together at BW3 next week for sure!
DSrugis 07-13-2005, 10:18 PM Just out of curiousity, you got a link to the listing?
Dave

A place would be nice: We can pick something right off the highways or in town. BW3's is on state street and there should be a structure we can all park in. Conversely, there are places like Chili's, Red Robin, etc. that are easy accessed from highways.
Let's get a head count going.
Quaote and add your name to the list if you are coming.

I was reading the night before how people money shifted their M3s so I got this fear stuck in me and I ended up missing 3rd gear on the first run so that put me off about .5 seconds and ended up hitting the gate or grabbing 5th for the other 3 runs of the night. My best time with a terrible 60 ft was 14.2. Being that I have run a 13.56 before i know my car is capable of much more. It also sucked cause there was like a 1.5 hour wait between runs cause it was packed there. I have never really had this problem with 3rd before. Does anyone know if this is all in my head or could this be tranny mounts wearing off or is there some other thing I can do to help me out. I feel like such an idiot sometimes.

lou10it 07-29-2005, 10:50 AM Are you goin to the SCCA Solo autocross this Sunday in Ypsi?
Is this at the Visteon plant that you can see from 94 in Ypsi? Who is all going?
Ralliart 07-29-2005, 11:13 AM Yep.... there is an entry list at myautoevents.com to see who is registered.
lou10it 07-29-2005, 11:57 AM Yep.... there is an entry list at myautoevents.com to see who is registered.
Looks pretty sweet. I won't be entering but I can't tell if it costs to just watch? Also, I live 1/4 mile away from the plant... if that. If you guys are looking for somewhere to crash or hang out. Let me know.
Ralliart 07-29-2005, 03:34 PM It doesn't cost anything to watch. Stop on by if you get a chance.

I will do that! What time will you be there?
Kristen, you still going?
THEOLDMAN 07-29-2005, 07:37 PM I'm thinking about going over there to watch, the 325i isn't in any condition to play, needs new brakes, and suspension work. If the weather isn't too hot I may have my White German Shepherd with me, makes us kind of easy to spot.
LittleBlueBMW 07-29-2005, 09:27 PM Competing in DSPL. So I am supposed to be there early for tech. Come root me on.

Mblaster 08-02-2005, 09:29 PM Back from Mi, had a great time. Met some local bimmer folks.
Mi is pretty cool, it's got to be a bitch in winter, do you guys garage your bimmers and drive something else?
Ubertino 08-02-2005, 11:26 PM Do I drive anything else? Do I DRIVE anything else? Hell NO! I got my car to enjoy it, come rain or shine, snow or slush. I've got some nice michelin alpines and a floor jack that says I'm gonna have fun in the winter, every winter.
I'll admit though- if there's more then a foot of snow on unplowed roads, out comes the pickup truck. But that only happened once last year. M3=fun in the winter.
Coffee with your doughnuts anybody?

Mblaster 08-03-2005, 09:27 PM I couldn't help looking at some real estate while we were there.
I was likeing the areas around MIS...We even went to the Manchester Chicken Broil!!
All the lakes ard country was really nice.
Are the winters really that brutal?
compared to cali where it looks like you are from, is probably best desrcibed like hell freezing over for just under 5 months of the year. Stay away, far far away
Ubertino 08-04-2005, 12:03 PM If you have a pathological issue with cold, then don't come here. It's great for the rest of the year, and, well, cold has it's uses and is fun too. The only trick to owning a bimmer in the winter is to wash it regularly to make sure that you're getting the salt and stuff off so it doesn't do anything to the car. Cars made in the last fifteen years generally won't rust because they're galvanized unless they're not cleaned at all and salt is given a chance to just eat on the car.

DSrugis 08-04-2005, 06:07 PM I garage too...I found out it is cheaper than buying different tires. I save about 400 in insurance, probably 200 on gas and then I go ahead and turn around and make 200 just selling the car (bought for 2150, sold for 2350.) I am starting to look already for this year. Let me know if you see a 92-96 escort for sale.

sweet poison 08-15-2005, 04:51 PM Hey guys, I just got back from Europe two weeks ago, and I started working right the next day when I got back, so I did not had much time to visit bf.com. I was in Croatia (right across Italy), I loved it so much, and can't hardly await to go back for Chrismas. I will post some pics later on. My brother and me were thinking about maybe having a bbq at our house before school starts. We live in Cascade (Forest Hills) in Grand Rapids. Would anybody be interested in coming?

LittleBlueBMW 08-20-2005, 05:34 PM Man the auto-x at the Silverdome is tomorrow but it is frickin expensive. $50.00 despite the membership. Starting to think about ditching on it. Have to leave here at 6:30 am Would leave there around 4-5 pm. 4 minutes (tops) of seat-time, 2 hours of working.
Maybe I should but that money to the BMWCCA track event.

exactly, after 4 years of auto-x the lack of seat time/hours spend there was just not high enough. and $50?? that is pretty crazy.
LittleBlueBMW 08-20-2005, 11:35 PM Screw that. Open track days are 100 at Waterford. 60.00 open lapping at Gingerman.
I am going to save up for these instead.

It's only $40 if you pre-register, and $30 if you are in SCCA. Are you going to be there tomorrow??
LittleBlueBMW 08-21-2005, 10:49 AM Nope, it is 50.00 across the board. Even if you pre-reg. late, supposedly.
I got my pay scaled back from taxes, so I am saving for the track day.
EastWind 08-23-2005, 09:40 AM I just got my first bmw, It is a 1995 740i, yes, I know, I know, massive repair costs and lots of stories. I currently reside in Detroit at the moment, Does anyone know of good mechanics specializing in BMWs? I rather avoid the dealership, considering the age of my car, and it is high mileage as well. I bought the car in Chicago and drove it down to Detroit on Saturday, so it has some life left in it. I scheduled an appointment with Ernhard?(sp) to get a complete inspection and was quoted $150. I look forward being part of this new family. :)
Quick Intro for those that may care ---
I am 27yrs old, a computer science student at wayne state finishing up after a few years off school. Unix is my thang, do some programming too, moved from Africa to the states and I love it out here. Spoken english is horrible, but written is decent. I use to be into sports cars, and had a modded 1990 Ford Probe that I raced at Milan 2 yrs ago, but I rather move in comfort than race. :) Oh yeah, now that I made the stupid decision to get this car, I really need a job too, so if you have the hook up.

Well, I payed $40 the last two races. Once by check and once in cash at the event.

Don't have an answer to your question. I do all of the small stuff myself, and luckily haven't had any big issues where I needed to find a mechanic.
LittleBlueBMW 08-23-2005, 01:16 PM Well, I payed $40 the last two races. Once by check and once in cash at the event.
Yeah, very pricey copnsidering I am an SCCA member and all. I'll reg. early for the next one so it is cheaper (by 20.00). It shouldn't be 40.00 for non-members. I mean 4 runs at less than 1 minute each. That is 10.00 / min for seat time. Track is severely less dollar for dollar. The chairs of the events are suing the excuse of rising costs, racing being an expensive hobby, etc. The end result is that Auto-X enrollment is down 40% nationwide. Events here are down at least 25%.
I heard there was some drama about people running who weren't competing, that sort of thing.
I am trying to prep my car a bit more for track too, so I am hoping to get sways and redo my brakes before the next event. My car is not what I would consider 100% for auto-X.

I'd recommend doing the brakes yourself. If you have any basic tools it's a fairly easy job. If you lived on the east side of the state I'd offer to do it in my driveway.

Hell yes! I'm guessing that It shouldn't be more than $350 in parts for new control arms, brake pads and brand new rotors!
If you can, spend the money on the tools to do it yourself and buy a Bentley Manual. It will more than pay for itself in the first use. You can even buy an air compressor and tools for the money you will save.
Ralliart 08-23-2005, 03:59 PM Eric IS alive.... did you sell the sedan??
Sorry I didn't follow up about the X-brace, I found out it was illegal in the class I have been autocrossing in.

I changed out all eight brake pads in my 540 last weekend. Ask Eric, if I can do this job anyone can. I am not the definition of "mechanically inclined".
All you need is a wrench, hex socket, c clamp (to move the piston back in), a jack, screwdriver (to remove the clip), new pads and some anti-seize paste. It only took me 3 hours. I would say that the new ceramic pads have less than half of the dust that the OEM pads had, with the same basic bite.
It's also a good time to clean up your wheels since you will have them off.
LittleBlueBMW 08-23-2005, 07:58 PM No Xbrace is STU? Sucky. I'd love an X brace from Eric.
I even did the brakes myself. 1.25 hours for the front, didn't do the rotors, yet. Easiest way to save.
My new ball joints were installed at the dealer for 275.00

Maybe we could get a list of people together with SRS lights on and help subsidize your purchase for the favor of pulling our codes. Are there any other Michigan folks out there with this issue?
Ubertino 08-26-2005, 10:33 AM I've already dealt with the SRS issue, sorry, no go for me.
Deez- who do you recommend? I always point people towards Chris Curless at Curless auto repair on LeGrave. He does lots of work with performance engines and has a good head on his shoulder. On top of being reasonable with his pricing. He has a project area, where big things like engine swaps and other types of work go, and usually cuts a nice discount if you're willing to wait a while.

The guy I recommend is actually in Holland. I worked with him at another shop and now he is on his own with another guy. They have all the tools/computers needed and more than enough experience. We did my motor/tranny swap, full interior swap, subframe swap, full suspension swap twice as well as supercharger and turbo install. He knows his shit and is a really good guy. I will have to get his number to post cause I only have his 2-way number.
I will call him later tonight or tomorrow and get the rest of the info.

I'm in Portage with all the tools as well and I agree that the brakes = easy and the ball joints will be tough. I'll have to get a hold of you when the Eurosport twinscrew SC arrives in a few weeks. I am sure I will need a hand with the install!
nitestalker 08-27-2005, 12:24 AM this weeekend i dont know if I have time...dont i need realignment after brakes? ;) thanks for the offer though, mate
you dont have to realign the car when you do the brakes, but you really would want to do everything together, brakes, ball joints, etc.. and do the alignment after that, since the suspension is worked on.
M Not Z : anything that has "supercharger" in the sentence definately sounds interesting!
Ubertino 08-27-2005, 03:10 PM I've done my control arms (not balljoints since M cars it's an assembly, you can't really replace just the bj) and the most important tool you need can be borrowed from auto zone- get a pickle, or a ball joint fork. They'll know what you're talking about. It's the only way to get the thing to separate from the hub assembly and the subframe.
Also, when you're tightening the nut on the balljoint, you want to take a floor jack with a block of wood and use that to push the ball hard into the subframe/hub. This will keep the ball from spinning, thus letting you get the nut on tight. Without this, I had problems with the ball spinning and keeping me from getting a tight fit.
DRC10 08-28-2005, 10:13 PM Hav'nt posted in awhile so I thought Id stop in and say whats ups. Its good to hear someone in MI is getting the new Twin Screw, Id love to see that if we have a meet sometime. Hey Ubertino have I been seeing you around town? Is your M a 4 door? My M's yellow and have ran past you atleast a couple times within the last two weeks.
DeezBMW 08-28-2005, 10:44 PM Hav'nt posted in awhile so I thought Id stop in and say whats ups. If his is a 95 then its not a 4 door. I have been seeing a few Ms around lately.......
Ubertino 08-29-2005, 12:18 AM Mine is Cosmos black on black, with Racing Hart C2 rims, no spoiler of any kind, tint only on the rear window and a strip on the front windshield. The rear M3 emblem is about six inches to far in on the trunk because when the trunk was repainted the lazy tech put it on wrong. It'll be fixed soon. Usually dirty (I drive a lot. A lot lot). For another week or two there is also a long long scratch on the driver side from the front wheel to the rear that was put on with a screwdriver by a driver who quote "doesn't like the way he drives" end quote. $1000 to fix. Thank god for insurance, but I'm still not a pleased person. At least the trunk logo will get fixed.
And....
Ivana, You Rock! My GF and I had a good time, sorry we couldn't stay for any time. Family is very coo. But next time around (my place??) there will be more time to discuss 95 on 96 and cute police officers... :)
Deez- whenever you get a chance with the mechanic info- I'm always curious and I'd love to meet up to talk cars for a sec and get some of your experienced input on my current project.
DC- did you get your car up and running again? Hoping all is well, looking for an update!
BoostFed325 08-29-2005, 05:51 PM deez you ready to go cause trouble again? i get mine back in a few days
DRC10 08-29-2005, 11:27 PM Ubertino- Yes the had been running for alittle bit now, it had a bad starter and emc relay. Man I'll tell ya it sucks to be without the m3. Driving any other car seems like driving a slushbox.
Ubertino 08-29-2005, 11:32 PM Ever since I've gotten my car it's been cursed with body problems. Never anything major mechanical. Somebody plows in the rear end. Takes 8 (EIGHT!) weeks to fix. And then the monthly 3 month stint in the body shop to fix what they didn't do quite right the first time (I'm picky). Then, some asshole takes a screwdriver to the side of my car, it'll take another week in the bodyshop because they have to repaint the entire side, all panels. :mad
So when I'm not in my little bmw, I'm in my blue sonoma piece of shiet. That is a slushbox if there ever was one, even if it is a stick.
Grand Rapids guys- I was at Ivana's and met Jason, Ivana and her bro. When's all the West Mich. guys going to represent? I know some great bars, decent coffee shops and a pleasant porch with everflowing beer and turkish coffee (real turkish coffee, not fancy roast starbucks crap).
LittleBlueBMW 08-30-2005, 11:30 AM Finally installed the new shift lever and Accessory pullies (minus the alternator). When they say bitch of a clip, they mean it. And pulling the fan really sucks. But everything went back together nicely.
Ali//325i 08-30-2005, 03:22 PM Not to be pushy but does anyone know this guy in holland? I am really considering doing an engine and tranny swap and i dont have the tools to do it so i really need to get in contact with this guy. Any help would be great :)

sweet poison 08-30-2005, 04:34 PM Awww Adam thx! You and your gf are really nice too, and yeah I am allways up for getting some coffee at night, so would be my brother. You have my cell so whenever you guys are bored give me a call. Thanks for showing up, and you have a beautiful car, and it looked pretty clean to me.
Ubertino 08-30-2005, 09:50 PM You're flattering me with the clean comment.... :rolleyes It's usually pretty dirty, especially right now...
SO, anybody like paying $3.20 for gas?

That is why I bought a motorcycle. Costs me around $13 every 10-11 days on premium gas. :D And thats runnin her fast all the time ;)
sweet poison 08-31-2005, 11:29 AM It costs me now $60 every 4 days :bluecry1 , I think I am getting a motorcycle too. Complaining doesn't help us any. You want to drive, you got to pump!
motorcycle would be nice, but just worried i would be killed asap in detroit traffic! maybe i should pick up one of those barley street legal mopeds, i would get some killer mpg.
Ubertino 08-31-2005, 11:59 AM Whatever you do with 2 wheels, get them today. I've been looking at the refined oil futures (gas) and the crude oil futures, and by Friday I think we'll see $3.49 per gallon for the lowgrade gas. Crude probably won't do much of $70 per barrel because of the release of reserves, but refining capacity will be down for at least a week. In my opinion we won't see any gulf refineries opening until Late september, and then prices will go down, but not much below $3 per gallon. Remember, when it comes to gas prices, it's two steps forward and one step back.
I need to get a motorcycle. I just wish that there was something that I could use in the winter as well...
Good news is that if I'm not tearing around (more driving like grandma) I'm averaging almost 25 mpg for mixed city and highway driving. Not great, but better then most SUV's and minivans.
Deez- any advice on a fuel effiecient motorcycle for the sub $1000 range?
LittleBlueBMW 08-31-2005, 12:27 PM I am thinking about a motorcyle too. Afraid of it but it is very economical. Plus you can park for free in front of my building.
TireFryer 08-31-2005, 12:54 PM 'sup peeps!
Getting an itch, but can't do much about it till FRI afternoon....
Landed myself an E34 Euro M5 and I can't wait to get it in my hands!
Anyone here have an M5 or had experiences with one? Pros/cons?
Have had the urge to join the elite ///M clan, and now I get my chance! :D
P.S> I am in need to sell my 1998 Supercharged Buick Riviera, as a 2 dr car is not good with 2 infant/baby kids! Hence the need for a 4 dr sedan ;) anyways, if you can help me sell it, there's a finder's fee in it for you!

Looking forward to meeting everyone at sometime or another... Eric is the only one who I have met so far, and he helped me do all 4 brakes on my prev E34 525i.
DRC10 08-31-2005, 02:15 PM TireFryer - Nice m5, good choice.
You guys thinking about a motorcycle for summer, well deez is right about gas prices, I used own a yamaha r6 and pay about 15 bucks almost every 2 weeks. The only downside is that the money saved in gas, usually went to my riduculious insurance prices.
Deez - Ive got another question for ya since you know alot about my car. Im looking to upgrade to the euro hfm kit. I know my car had the engine swap, but did they swap the harness or emc. I need to make sure I buy the right chip. Ill probably just have to look for myself when i get some time, but thanks if you can shed some knowledge
sweet poison 08-31-2005, 02:18 PM TireFryer, your car is bling bling. Seriously I love it. I am sure you will have fun in it. I have an black e39 540i, and I am very often in Lansing, so the next time i see you I will wink!

Isn't UM: Blue and Maize, CAL is Blue and Gold, and yes I hail from there originally.
Awesome car.
Ubertino 08-31-2005, 10:23 PM The trick to motorcycle insurance is to have a seprate insurance policy that you get through an independant broker, not through the insurance company directly. Sometimes you can get it cheaper through whoever does your car insurance, but often it just drives up your four wheel policies in addition to the cost of insurance.
I WANT YOUR M5!~!! Where the hell did you find it? Do I dare ask how much you paid for it, milage, etc? Next time I'm in lansing (happens often) can I see it? Sit it it? Listen to it rev? (Drool?)
:)
TireFryer 08-31-2005, 11:52 PM thanx for the nice comments folks! :) I am just as eager to get my rear-end into the car and have fun with it...alas, it stays in the garage till the riviera is SOLD..so, ahem help me sell it, and there $$$ in it for you! ;)
car is coming from the Florida panhandle area, so I am hoping everything is going to be just fine and the car gets here fine in one piece! the owner is bringing the car to me from FL :) (he'll be visiting family in MI, so he offered to bring it to me!) Can't go wrong with that!
P.S. everyone gets a ride once I have had my fun with it ;) hehe
BTW, I am just a handful of miles out of East Lansing...
astor 09-01-2005, 11:16 AM i say we have another meetup :D gotta fix my suspension, brakes, interior lighting, alarm brain and a wash and i'm all set :confused
DeezBMW 09-01-2005, 12:22 PM Ubertino: I have only had my bike about 5 months so I really don't know a whole lot about them. I have a GSXR and it still gets good gas mileage so I don't think it will even matter what kind you get, its always gonna beat what you get out of a car, and your faster than 90% of the cars :D
As for insurnace, the best way to get cheap bike insurance is to drop the medical coverage they offer. I have good medical insurance through work so I didn't need it and it dropped my insurance HUGE. My Gixxer 750 only costs me $21 a month for insurance for full coverage on the bike.
DRC10: It wont matter if the ECU got swapped or not cause they make the chips according to the ECU number and they are the same in 95 M3s, they end in 413 or 523 or something like that so you'll be all set. Best bang for your buck on your car is def. the track pipe from AA. Thats the only mod I could feel the power difference in. Besides a supercharger/turbo of course.
Tirefryer : I only got one thing to say to you
That car is HOT!!! Congrats!!

I went through alot of diff. tires on my car and the ones I liked the most for stickyness and all around wear were the Bridgestone Potenza SO3s. I liked them better than the Toyo Proxies I had as well as the Michilen Pilots and the Nittos and Pirrelis. Just my opinion from my experience with those particular tires :D
Never tried the Kumhos....
Ubertino 09-02-2005, 08:48 AM I'm sending out feelers for a bike right now- got some friends that work at the Harley dealership that should be able to find me a really nice deal- I'm just looking for two wheels. While they look I'm gonna see about getting my motorcycle endorsement. Deez- any advice on that? I'm not worried about the written test, but the whole special road test with a 'licensed' agency seems a little odd. Maybe WildBoar can help me with that too.
DRC10 09-03-2005, 04:17 AM Ubertino- I dont think Wildbore does the road test anymore, I believe I called them about it last year while trying to do mine. I can let you know right now that the test is very hard on a croctch rocket, lots of parking lot speed cornering, and those bikes arnt very stable at such low speeds. And I rode motocross for a good 5 years, so I have had decent motorcycle experience.
gasolina 09-04-2005, 04:17 PM Hi guys, I've been moving the last weeks so I've been quiet and didn't make it to the dreamcruise meet :(, but at least I got a new place up in the rochester/oakland township area. Anyone up here?
I keep seeing a nice E36 Dakar M3 Sedan cross through the back way through Pontiac, wondering if its a member...
Anyways, there is a open track day @ waterford hills next weekend (Sept 10) and I was wondering of anyone was going? I'll be there trying to kill whats left of my summer tires and streaching out the M3's legs before putting her to hibernation for the winter. The organizers said there were plenty of spots left (as of last week), so some of you guys should try to make it. Typical $100 prereg'ed and $125 @ the gate.
Laterz,
Jacob

I would recomend the weekend classes the state sponsors (details as soon as I find them). One of my buddies teaches, so I jsut called him up for the latest class. $25, one whole day (half class-room, half out i the parking lot), finish the class "test" at the end and get that endorsment for the state to add the "CY" to your lic and be legit. $25 vs $45 for the test you sign up for at the Sec of State. These guys (in my case) were all hardcore riders, harleys ful dressed doing the 1 mph 10' u-turn scraping pegs and all, and I learned so much its not even funny. Highly recomended.

Ubertino 09-05-2005, 03:34 PM I've found a couple of bikes I want. Before i do anything about buying one though, I'm going to wait until I've had my endorsement so that I can test drive whatever I wind up getting. I'm drawn to the old R series BMW bikes from the early seventies (of course a BMW) but I also like a couple of the newer suzuki models.
Gasonlina- when/if you have any information, please PM or email me with it. On Tuesday I'm going to the sec. of state and see what they have to tell me. If everything works out well I'm hoping to have the license by the end of the month.
Boost- I'd love the check your car out in person and peg you with a few questions if you'd be up. Don't know how you feel about meeting people from the forum in person... I'm with a mostly stock m3 and thinking about the future, but I'm not going to do anything that I haven't seen and liked in person.
BoostFed325 09-05-2005, 06:06 PM bikes are hard to choose which you want. iv always liked the R6's so thats what i went with. i got an 05 R6 the special edition raven model.
i think you will have an extremly hard time test driving any bike from a dealer, i couldnt test drive the bike i bought.

BoostFed325 09-05-2005, 09:34 PM hmmm, i dont have a number either but i could get one in the next few days
i think in the next few weeks we should have the grand rapids area people meet up and steer up some trouble at the local lots

The Grand Rapids BMW bike dealer is way cool. I had my K1100rs serviced there years ago when I lived in East Lansing. If the repairs were longer than a few hours, they would give me a bike to take back to East Lansing. I sold the bike a long time ago though. No more motorcycles for a while. I had too many near death experiences in the Detroit area.
Ubertino 09-09-2005, 04:27 PM Driving in Grand Rapids is way chill compared to Detroit area. I grew up in Ferndale, and the switch in driving when I moved out here was, well, a switch. People are much slower, and just as (more?) stupid. Not as many cars on the road helps.
I'm probably going to wind up with a Kawasaki K750, I can get one in great shape for under $1k. I'll probably get that and ride it until I find the bike that I really want, which could take a while. We'll see what works out though.
Ali//325i 09-09-2005, 05:18 PM Kool thanks man. Off the top of your head does anyone know how much a tranny swap and possibly and engine swap can run me? I have never had a "good" mechanic. The last mechanic we had in cali kept ripping my dad off, He charged my dad close to 1k to do some valve springs and some retainers i think. that was without parts. And of course he suckered my dad into buying OEM bmw part from the dealer... :nono. I told him to buy aftermarket stuff but i was 12 yrs old and the time and noone listens to a 12 year old :rolleyes .
So ya besides my worthless story, Anybody have an educated guess as to the price of a mechanic doing a swap?

I told him to buy aftermarket stuff but i was 12 yrs old and the time and noone listens to a 12 year old :rolleyes .
So ya besides my worthless story, Anybody have an educated guess as to the price of a mechanic doing a swap?
-Ali
Back when I was searching to find someone to do mine at a legitimate shop I was getting quotes for $1600 in just labor for a tranny swap alone. That didn't include any parts what so ever. That was the cheapest out of about 15-20 shops I shoped around at. The biggest thing was that nobody wanted to do it so they quoted high. Its a really easy job and if I had the space to do it I would take yours on myself for some extra money but I don't even have my own garage to park my vehicles in. Its not going to be cheap unless you find someone that has done it before so be prepared.
Kool thanks man. Off the top of your head does anyone know how much a tranny swap and possibly and engine swap can run me? I have never had a "good" mechanic. Auto to manual tranny swap, or just a tranny swap?
Ali//325i 09-09-2005, 06:11 PM auto to manual.
Thanks for the info Deez, do you think the guy you are recomending me will be a lil cheaper or around the same price? I mean the price is worth it if the install is good i dont wanna sacrafice a dman good job for a couple hundred bucks. The only reason i am concerned is because i am taking a C/C++ programming course at GRCC as a side thing and its around 300 bucks just for the damn class, so if my highschool doesnt let me do dual enrollement i will be hurting for cash lol. I hope everything goes well.
The engine is still fairly strong in my car but i have 2 people willing to sell me engine and tranny together with the parts i need to do the swap for not too much at all. I figure if i buy the engine as well i can always have a spare if anything goes wrong, or well... :devillook ...stroker and or turbo motor maybe in time.

DRC10 09-09-2005, 09:36 PM Getting stoped without your full motorcycle endorsement sucks, trust me I know :( .
Met a guy on the way back from ferris this week on a bmw motorcycle, he saw the M when i passed and had to show me up. Followed him at about 120 for about 5 exits down 131. When he pulled off he gave a wave and I gave a thumbs up. Seemed like a cool person, just thought Id share.
Ubertino 09-10-2005, 03:14 PM For a tranny swap, I think Chris's done a couple. Curless Auto Repair in the phone book. Tell him adam (the man in the hat) sent you. See what he has to say- might be some good news.
Ali//325i 09-10-2005, 03:57 PM Thanks ubertino :drink1 . I called and left a message. I hope he can help me out or atleast give me an estimate price quote.
Boostfed- Any word yet?

Boostfed is at the Michigan Notre Dame game right now. He will be back later on.
Ali//325i 09-10-2005, 04:15 PM Oh nice, Damn I am soo mad about that game lol. Its funny to see Grady playing though because of all my friends telling me the stories of playing with him.I also remember seeing him run over our entire team, i think when he played last year they beat us by like 40 something points haha. BTW, Deez, Does this guy own a shop, or does he do the work out of his garage? I was just wondering.

mybimr 09-11-2005, 12:37 AM I noticed there are several folks from GR here...I'm on the NE side of town. What are your shops of choice for service? I've used Arie Nol and had good luck, but he's on the other side of town from me....
Looking for other good ones
Ubertino 09-11-2005, 11:46 AM I tell everyone about Chris Curless, over just north of wealthy on laGrave. He's smart and doesn't screw people over. Also, for a lot of suspension work, things not really involving computers, Jerry's garage is pretty good- real honest, good prices. They don't do as much with the performance cars, but they'll tell you if they aren't comfortable fixing it. I usually go to Chris first.
The best best mechanic for BMW's bar none is Euro Autowerks in belding, but I can't get ahold of them, something's wrong with their phone. I'll probably drop in there in person on Monday and find out what's up. They do work on Porsche, Ferarri, BMW, Mercs, and all sorts of crazy exotics. They know their shit.
However, for probably 80% of the stuff that these cars need, you can do it yourself with a torque wrench and some patience. The only thing I haven't done to my car is bodywork.
Ali//325i 09-11-2005, 12:36 PM my bimr- Does this arie nol have a way for me to get a hold of him? ;) Also just wanted to say hi. Where do you live I am in good ol plainfield township, where the cars suck and the people suck even more :stickoutt .
ubertino- This Euro Autowerks is probably super expensive correct?
I would love to find a good, reasonable mechanic. Yet sometimes thats an oxymoron, Hopefully some of these places can help me out. BTW what should i do with my automatic tranny after i swap it out? I don't think i want to sell it to anyone on the forums because its had some problems but is there a good salvage yard or someone who rebuilds trannys that i could sell it to?

Ubertino 09-11-2005, 01:16 PM Ali- it's $80 per hour on BMW's if memory serves. From plainfield township it's about 15 minutes if traffic is behaving nicely. They know their shit (saw a Pantera Delmaro in there for work, on a lift next to a 911 widebody with twin turbo- an amazing custom car). In the waiting room is an old speedster that has been stripped and tuned for tracking, they've won a bunch of vintage racing championships with it. There's another identical model porshe next to it, fully restored.
They even have a paint room.

Arie Nol Auto Center Inc
(616) 532-6019
5189 Eastern Ave SE
Kentwood, MI 49508
I found him by driving by and noticing several bimmers in the lot.
Thanks for the tips guys....years ago (about 12) I worked a vintage race at Grattan. I think I saw some of those cars (the Pantera, etc) there. I love cool cars. It was kind of fun since the volunteer workers got to ride around the track between sessions in different cars. My most memorable was a 25th anniversary Lotus Espirit. Fun stuff.
"However, for probably 80% of the stuff that these cars need, you can do it yourself with a torque wrench and some patience. "
I agree, that's why I don't know very many around here (I've owned an e30 for at least 10yrs). But as I get more busy with work, I find it's more of a time issue, not a capability issue.
Ali//325i 09-12-2005, 08:06 PM Well heres how my mechanic list goes:
Arie Noels- NOPE
Curless Auto- We'll do it but make sure you bring the anal lube(600-1k for install)
Euroautowerks- We are too busy so...NOPE
German Auto- NOPE
Bobs Transmission-(he asked if my bmw was fwd....) NOPE!!!
So i have ONE option, lol unless boostfed has another for me :rolleyes . But they said it could take anywhere from 15-23 shop hours to do the install.....WTF!?!
There are members on the forums who did theres in like 2days themselves lol. Ohwell so if boostfed doesnt have a number for me then i will have to see if my familys bank account can take that kind of hit. Thanks for all the help with the mechanics though guys :buttrock , haha even if they all refused me. Atleast they were honest and told me they couldnt handle the job, which made me a lot less mad lol.

where are my manners????
hello to you too.....I'm off of Perkins between Leonard and Knapp. There's another guy in my neighborhood with an 86/87 325es that's cherry. I've talked to him before, but he's not much of a car junkie....just knows what he likes. We have three or four other late model bimmers also, but I haven't met the owners.
It's kind of funny...I see |
