View Full Version : So How Many Auto-X'ers Do We Have Here?!?!

I have noticed (mainly in the Auto-X forum) that there are quite a few guys in this region that auto-x. I have also noticed that the auto-x season in the Northern VA area is pretty much done until spring (correct me if I am wrong here).

Anyway, I am not sure how far some of you guys in Northern VA/MD/DC are willing to drive, but there are two clubs, one that I run with, that hold events through the winter months.

Tidewater Sports Car Club (www.tidewatersportscarclub.com) and the Beachcombers Corvette Club (www.beachcomberscorvetteclub.com). I have not run with the corvette club since I was running with the ODR SCCA chapter (any more than 2 events a month and the wife would go ballistic :D ) but the ODR chapter doesn't kick off their season until the last weekend in March with a 2 day SCCA Auto-x school (which looks pretty interesting BTW). After talking with a few people, they told me that the corvette club also runs in the winter months.

Both clubs open registration up about 2 weeks prior to the event. The TSCC club also runs some of their events at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. They use the LCAC (hovercraft) launch area which has concrete as smooth as as a baby's butt (well maybe not that smooth, but I think you know what I mean :D !!)

I would love to see more BMWs at these eents and it would be a good way for some of us to meet. Hopefully I will see some of you there if you did not know about these clubs before. The websites of the clubs I mentioned are pretty informative, but I will answer any questions I can of course.

I will probably start next season. I was able to go to Summit Point and have found that road course racing is absolutely what I want to ultimately get into. So, that'll be on my list too. I'll also hit up the drag strip every once in a while.

I ran my first season of autoX last season. I plan to do it again next year (spring) and some drivers schools.

I just started auto-xing in September. I plan to go to some of the BMWCCA driver schools and, like Phil, eventually get into road racing.

Same for me... started in September in my 2.8 Coupe and also joined the local SCCA chapter (Appalachian). Now we wait for Spring.

Actually someone told me about the SCCA Winter Series in Camden/Philly. I'm just not into standing in the cold all day to drive for 3 minutes.

I haven't done it yet, due to time constraints, but I would love to start going once my schedule opens up.

Phil - I didn't even know about Summit Point until I saw it mentioned in a thread. I'm planning on going in March. I'm taking the Cooper S and the M3. I wouldn't mind running them both and checking out what they can do.

I did the Friday At The Track (FATT) school a long time ago when I first got my M (back in 96). Even though it was only 1 day, I had a great time and learned a lot. It made driving on the street a whole lot more fun when I realized what my car could do :evil2 !!!!

FATT is what I'm aiming for next year. Sunir took me for a lap at a slower pace and the track looks to be an awesome rush. Plus, it's so easy to get there for me.

I ran a 20 minute session also with Sunir at Summit Point full course. Fantastic. Hopefully I will get to do it with my car next year. I think I'll start out on Jefferson first though and work my way to full course.

Long time ago and in a galaxy far, far away I was A sedan champion. 1968 - 1970, EVSCC in Key West.
You haven't auto-xed until you do a course that if you lose it just a bit your'e in the salt water and mangroves!

I'd like to do it again.

Let's hope you get that chance again. A champion's heart never dies...only his reflexes. I'm sure you'd still be able to teach all of us some tricks.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I believe I could still be competitive. One of the reasons I haven't really thought about it lately (past eight or so years) is my two convertibles. Neither have roll bars and my wife sure wouldn't let me use her 5 series when she had it, or her 323Ci. I have a hardtop for my 318 but I don't think it would pass even with the ROP system.

JB

I passed on buying the '00 M roadster a few weeks ago.

Did Six Flags stop all autox's? How can people complain about the noise of cars and not a freakin Park?

At NOVA-Loudoun Campus (Rt 7 in Sterling), there is a huge parking lot they use to teach motorcycle driving. Would it be an option to borrow that lot for a day? Just throwing out an idea.

Unfortunetly, rosecrap is going under new management... so we're not really sure whats going to happen with that lot anyways.

Six flags.... blows big chunks.. i bet they get more noise with all those screaming kids and machinery..

MRoadster- someone just said they drive by there, and it's almost always used by the class.... hmm... we're looking in to it :) thanks!

I remember reading in one of the MWCSCC newsgroup e-mails that you're looking to attend the Evolution school in VA next month. Any other Council event regulars planning on attending? I'm looking to attend myself, and it would be good to put faces with names I've become familiar with.

Jed

I remember I attended an autocross back in 2001 (only watched-this was before I even considered doing it) in Columbia at the Lincoln Technical Institute off of Snowden River Parkway, and I thought that there was an autox at Tipton Airport off of Rt32. Have both of them denied requests for autox? Are a lot of owners now backing away from renting out their lots?

That would suck if there were less and less events... I guess we'd have to change our name to team.DETAIL-dedicated to shining up our rIdEzzzzz.

I think there are a few people I know that are going to be there... like 3 or so, but thats only of who ive heard that is going. There may be more. If you want to go, you should definitely sign up soon before spots fill up. I'll be there Sat and Sun :)
