OK I AM TRYING TO BRING BACK A 2002 FROM THE DEAD. I started with a charging problem where the battery would run down, so i thought to myself "this alternater looks like it 20 years old so simple enough ill change it and that will fix that. well here i am with A new unit and the problem still remains. I consulted some of my mechanic friends and they said i will have to trouble shoot the vehicles wiring...OMG i dont know where to even begin. Can anyone help! DOES ANYONE HAVE A PDF SHOP MANUAL THEY CAN EMAIL ME.
PLEASE HELP

With the engine running (at a fast idle) have you checked the voltage at the battery, it should be approx 14V. If its lower your battery is not getting charge. If it higher (like 16V) then the voltage regulator is dead and can fry your battery. If you are unsure about what to do or dont have a digital Multimeter to check this with (a cheapo one can be had for $15-20), drop into your local auto electrican, and say your battery is not charging, they will test it for you (should do for free). Is the thick brown wire attached to the outside of the alt attached to the block? if that is missing or broken the alt will not charge.
Also if the globe in the red "L" light on the dash is blown the alt will not charge - its integral to the charging curcit - check that too.
But remember the alternator is not designed to charge a dead flat battery, even driving for 4hrs at 60mph will not full charge it - you must charge it with a charger, do this, then check your voltages.

You know those overpriced "Performance Grounding Kits" that actually do little or nothing on newer cars? Our cars can definitely use those but save the $50+ dollars and just get some 4 and 8 gauge power wires from your favorite car audio store and go to town.
You don't need a manual for charging issues most of the time. You can just get by with a multimeter if you know what you're doing.

i know the connection plug behind the alt. can be an issue. the spade connector gets worn out and does not complete the connection. wiggle it while looking at your dmm. ive encountered this problem with all my 02's. i just went ahead and by-passed the reg and put a newer, higher amp alt with a built in reg. never had the problem again.
