Odd question here: I have a stock-for-now 2003 325i. I've had it for about 6 months and now that it is getting cold, it does something odd. This has happened twice. After starting the car, the temperature displays at 37* and the car starts sounding the door chimes about 6 or 7 times and flashes the temp. Anyone know why this happens? I feel like the car is saying, "it's cold", to which I want to reply, "no sh*t".

Pardon the ignnorance of a newb......

It's a black ice potential warning, and it's normal, even in E36s, MINI Coopers, etc. It'll do it even when you've been driving for a while, and the temp drops to 37.

It should be covered in the Owner's Manual.

Yes, common BMW function.. dating back to the middle ages.

Really, I haven't been in a BMW old enough to not do this.
'85 528e has it, for example. We'll see yet if the E12 has that function.

lol........Gonna blow? Maybe I should just shoot it first. Then go buy an M. :)

Seriously, thanx for the input/info. I checked the owners manual. I didnt see it (obviously). It is possible that I could be suffering from cranial flatulence, or they didnt include the info.

Again, thank you to all for the input. It is appreciated.

Anyone know when the next Deal's Gap trip is planned?

Ive never seen a BMW besides my mom's e46 that actually has a working temp display / OBC. Has to be one of the most useless "features" ever.

Both of mine work. So there.

Note to self... Bill's radio needs to tap into the OBC power.

To where it doesn't show the temp at all, or it shows -140F or something? I've seen that on the E39s...

Mine is dead on, works on the OBC and the instrument cluster. Which I love BTW...:)

Where was that sig pic taken? And where are all the damn jetskis? :stickoutt

Pics were taken at Lake Monroe in Bloomington, IN last night. I'm probably moving back to Atlanta anyways so figured I'd get some good pics. No jetskis when I took 'em, but there was a guy who was looking at me funny. :rofl

And I do value convenience, not gimmickry, in a 5-series. This isn't a car that should be stripped. If it were an E30 track car I wouldn't want it.

Yeah, you're right. God forbid you should have to roll down the window to find out how cold it is. :rofl

BTW: Your car needs M-parallels STAT. And I need your old Style 5s. :devillook

It does when you consider that black ice can be even more dangerous to motorsickles than cars. It's not about telling you just how cold it is for the sake of your own comfort, so much as it is a heads-up to watch the road and conditions more carefully.

I think it's actually pretty smart to have it on the bikes as well. :buttrock

I laugh at black ice...

Just thought about it a little bit...makes sense.

Not that I would be comfortable riding a bike in those conditions anyways. :confused

Those are optional to me, but I actually do find that I'm more tolerant and forgiving of the elements than I used to be. I credit that to the "vert effect." :cool

What is that for? Nuclear reactor? (Seriously, I want to know what you're talking about.)
Edit: I'm guessing you mean something to do with the catalyst.

Matt, Germans don't do gimmicks, unless you mean mercedes.

Was it just mileage based?

Some 2002s have a badass "Fasten Seatbelts" light on the dash.

Jesse- Catalytic converter.

Black ice is not politically correct. I believe the Ice likes being called either "African American Ice" or "Negro Ice."

I use my OBC all the time. Mostly for the Range function, but also for the temp too.

I even use the WB button. :)
