View Full Version : Who is the best M5 mechanic in GA?
dbrumbach 10-24-2006, 09:33 AM I live in Brunswick GA, and recently upgraded my 90 e34 525i for a 91 M5. I have a decent shop in Brunswick, but I am curious to find the best M5 shop or mechanic in the state. You never know when you might need the best.

xatlas0 10-24-2006, 12:15 PM Harrison does a good job too, and he actually has a very nice E28 M5.

Hey dbrumbach... :wave
Kor Media forever! :rofl
4500 RPM 10-24-2006, 01:22 PM Will Island Automotive not do a good job?
Critz or Tom Bush?
I'm from St. Simons. :)
WytLytnyn 10-24-2006, 01:33 PM I used to live in Jax. Never heard anything good about Tom Bush BMW in terms of service.
You won't be sorry for going to Performing Imports.
count_schemula 10-24-2006, 03:42 PM 91 M5 has a real motor. Prolly don't want to take that to some dealer clowns.
Nice car d, some say it's the last of the real ///M cars. Hand built coach and motor.

I'm curious if the dealer mechanics know how to work on an S38B36 M5. Not sure if they get trained on older BMWs. I'd bet they don't get trained on anything older than an E36.
While everybody is recommending he take it to Atlanta for big work, it's 300 miles away.
OP: I'd ask the JAX guys too.

Maybe PM JBgotM, he's in Jax and has a built S52 MZ3.
bcart1991 10-24-2006, 04:00 PM Active is probably just as close as anyone here in Atlanta.
Jax--> Miami = 338 miles
Jax-->ATL = 286 miles
Not a huge difference, depending what side of Jax you're on. I imagine thosse guys know a thing or two about high-strung motors...
count_schemula 10-24-2006, 04:07 PM Brunswick is just south of Savannah.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Ron was the only mechanic in Atlanta that could fix my dad's M5. :buttrock
Trust me, we tried them all.

I would suggest asking for someone who has extensive EXPERIENCE with S38's. While AA might, they are not known for it and I know several folks who had botch jobs from AA. I saw 2 of their earlier turbo cars(demo cars) and considered them to be full on hack jobs. They might make great products now, but the early stuff looked like something fixed on MLKjr blvd.
I would suggest Harold up in Suwanee or David at Wrights, both have done extensive work on S38s. David raced one of the highest output S38's in club racing for a few years and I have seen a couple Dinan turbo S38's being rebuilt at Harolds

Steve Haygood down in Thomaston, people from all over the country send their M5/M6's to him all the time. Best of all he is reasonable.

I'll second Steve Haygood -- I've taken my E28 M5 to him. He does excellent work, is reasonably priced, and really knows the engine inside and out.

Forgot Mr Haygood. I would add him to the list of the 2 I mentioned already. Any of the 3 could do a S38 in their sleep. I would add Techno Racer as he will be doing the head gasket on the 92 M5 that let go while I was driving it around town.

I talked to Steve this afternoon if you read through this thread he had one leave and has 3 or 4 more waiting. Are you in a hurry?

I currently use Foreign Car Center, Tom Bush and crew have done a great job, I am very pleased with them.
My question was ntended to explore all options. The Bush's have my M5 currently, giving her a good once over.

I couldn't be happier with the M5. If you remember the Kor Media days, you will remember my black 525i. The M5 was the perfect trade up.

Would you have contact info for either of these two guys?
dbrumbach 10-30-2006, 01:52 PM Thanks for all the input, I figured other members might steer me in the right direction. And I feel that I have been. Any contact info on the suggested technicians would be appreciated.
Cheers....db

David owns
Wrights Car Care
770-451-6789
Harold owns
Bavarian Motor Sports
770-932-1225
Both have built some fast older BMW race cars and know the M5 quite well.
They are the only shops plus Steve Haygood that have worked on my cars in the last 10 years and that many BMWs since I have lived in GA . Bob Shields, Bavarian Auto Service in Rock Hill SC is also another good guy who has worked on my LTW M3 when I lived in Columbia. Not sure what he knows about the M5, but all those guys know each other and can put you in touch with the right person.

Thanks Mike!
dbrumbach 12-02-2006, 04:02 PM I just got back from a trip to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:place></st1:City> earlier this week. I dropped my 91 M5 with David Daniels at Wright's in Chamblee. He did a great job adjusting all my valves. And I bought his custom Blair ECU from one of his race engines and dropped it into my M5. What a thing of beauty.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
David is very knowledgeable and reasonably priced, I will certainly visit him again.<o:p></o:p>
