View Full Version : Got Sucker-Punched at my Soccer Game, Should I Press Charges?

Scenario:

About twenty minutes into my soccer game yesterday, I collided with a player from the other team and was fouled pretty hard. I didn't get the call from the ref and I felt it was pretty blatant. After the play was over, the guy was walking away and I tripped him from behind. Admittedly, it was an asshole thing to do, but I got caught up in the moment. It wasn't a hard trip, more of what you would do to your friend just playing around.

I turned to resume playing when this guy sucker punches me in the side of the face, hitting mostly my forehead and grazing my eye. I didn't even have a chance to react or defend myself as I never saw it coming. He was immediately tackled and pulled away by a teammate of mine. A little swelling persisted yesterday, but I kept ice on it, so it actually doesn't look too bad.

After the guy got tossed from the game, he was still talking shit, saying racial slurs like, "white man, don't phuck with a Mexican." I honestly might have let it go if it weren't for the remarks, but at halftime decided enough was enough after his taunting from the sideline, so I called the police.

They showed up towards the end of the game and wrote a report, giving me a case number. They said I could press charges as early as Wedneday, which will cost me $10 or so. They'll issue a warrant for his arrest and he'll go to jail next time he comes in contact with police.

So, would you let it go or press charges? I'm leaning towards pressing charges but have never had to do anything like this before, so wanted to know if it was even worth my time and what the likelihood of his seeing prison, even for a couple of hours would be.

Thanks!

Hmmmm......I am torn....

If you tripped me, I would've punched you, too. In that regard, I would say bygones.

However, based solely on the fact that he didn't let it go afterwards, I say screw him and press charges.

I hear ya, but the punishment didn't fit the crime. This kinda crap always happens in our league, especially against this team. Typically it's something that's let go. I woulda been pissed if the tables were turned, but wouldn't have sucker-punched someone.

My real reason for posting was wanting to know if it's even worth my time pressing charges.

Concur with the above, with a cautionary note that maybe escalating things on your end (the trip) wasn't the best course of action. I know, such is soccer and its legendary heritage of hooliganism, but next time, let the other guy be the ass, and you be the better sportsman. Then the area between right and wrong isn't so grey. :az

That said, maybe you'll get some "badazz cred" around the shop for looking like you got in a fight. :blackeye

Again, I'm not worried if the punch was warranted, because I know it wasn't. Tripping and other "lesser crimes" happen all of the time in this league.

I'm wondering if it's worth my time and if this guy will ever have to pay a fine of see the inside of a jail cell, even if it's for a few hours.

Well, looking at this this way: He committed a foul, but during play of the game. In a pause of play, you tripped him. As far as a DA or judge will look at it, That was act #1. He over-reacted, yes, but not in an heinous or egregious manner. If I had to guess (barring other warrants on his sheet from other incidents not related to this one), based only on this incident, I'd say the most he'd be charged with is a misdemeanor simple assault. But given that you were the one to initiate contact outside of the course of the game, I'd be surprised if they threw the book at him in a way they would have had you done nothing to provoke or cause it.

Play with the bull, you get the horns!

I wouldnt' worry about it, it sucks, and I don't condone his behavior, however, you instigated it.

It sounds as if it wasn't anything serious, I'd say your time is better spent elsewhere, moving on.

That, and for things like this, the sentence handed down usually involves the jail time being suspended, and nothing more than a fine (again, barring other warrants or transactions). So it'll be on his record, but as far as him cooling his heels in a cell, that's unlikely.

So in a nutshell, I'm sorry G, but I don't think the odds are with you. :az

What did the refs do after the punch?

I would at least make sure he doesn't play in the league for a couple years.

We've gotten an entire team (not my team) suspended for two years for something similar to this.

Call the league administrators TODAY.

Call the league and let them deal with him and his team. Don't press charges.

Similar incident happened to me and my team 2 weeks ago. A team mate leveled a particular guy on the other team. I am one of the better players on our team so he went after me when I stole the ball from him. He turned around and kicked my feet out from under me from behind while I was at full sprint. I rolled my ankle pretty bad and was out the rest of the game. Our goalie got in his face so the next play downfield, that guy came in and cleated our goalie in the head and stomach after he had control of the ball. Fight ensues.

....that was the league comish's team. Unfortuneatly, the comish nor his wife were present at that game.

You both upped the ante. Neither of you are guiltless. You would have never been punched if you had not sucker tripped him. Although, he did foul you in-game. But, in-game unsportsman like conduct is something else. I am sure you've fouled someone before. They didn't run up and trip you though.

Not only that. But when all is said and done. It wasn't like you got hurt, pride aside. Plus, you don't know how psyco this guy is. If you press charges he might bring something that can really hurt you next time. It's not worth it.

It's similar to a football player smacking an opponent in the helmet. It doesn't hurt, but it sends a message. Part of the game.

The punch was totally uncalled for. Not part of the game.

Well, if the refs did their job, both of you should have gotten thrown out of the game, and possibly not allowed to play the next game or two. A penalty might be called, but retaliation will always be. From here, I wouldn't worry about the guy who sucker punched you, but be worried about the refs in which did not handle the situation correctly. If they can't call fouls like they should, or handle situations like this, I would be worried about how well they can handle fights or anything of that matter, or to be able to maintain a clean game, so fights don't happen.

As for actual soccer experience, I played a good 6 years and now watch probably the worst type of soccer, indoor soccer. If you want to talk about brutal, go watch an indoor soccer game. I have seen terrible games and I have seen great games. It all depends on the referee and how he/she controls the game. I would actually send a complaint about the refs instead of this one guy, since it's really their job to stop all of this.

Umm...no.

Sure, had he called the foul originally against this guy, I wouldn't have tripped him and he wouldn't have punched me, but this team was that dirty, and I hate to say it, but most of the Mexican teams in this division are cut from the same mold.

So it was just a matter of time. Having played soccer for 24 years, four of those collegiately, the refs can only take so much of the blame, especially when you're playing the particular caliber of team these guys were.

And no, I shouldn't have been tossed out of the game. Yellow card? Sure. But a red card, much less missing two games? Not a chance. This guy, as far as I'm concerned, shouldn't be allowed to play in this league ever again, and I'd even consider kicking the whole damn team out as well.

Let it go legally. Worst case scenario legally is that he can countercharge for the outside-of-play trip as simple assault and you'll both have to defend yourselves.

As far as the soccer league goes, definitely report it, and append a copy of the police report.

I think both are just part of the game. I have been tripped and tripped others several times. I have been punched and thrown punches a few times. I was kicked out of a league for a year after scissor kicking a guy after he called me a Ni%%er. I tried to break both of his legs but was not successful. I also had to coach a youth soccer team to learn and teach sportsmanship. I also had muscle in my ankle torn by a girl kicking me because I told her she should be on the side lines with pom poms and making out Gatorade instead of on the field.

I would consult with the league...let them know you are very tempted at pressing charges, and that if they don't take action against this guy or his team, the league will have made the decision for you. Basically, do something, or I will... :evil2

I'm quite sure that you'll be playing him again...therefore, I don't think pressing charges would be a good idea. instead, next game just give him hell(if you decide to go with this, be ready for a though game). I've played soccer back in my days; can I get a spot in your team? I'll take care of him for you (in a good old soccer way :alright ). the punch was for sure an act of 'war' and he should have been ejected. next game, whenever he gets the ball kick him real good. I used to play mexicans when I first moved to Atlanta and they used to try me at times, it just took one good "touch" from me to one of them and they stoped messing. they are COWARDS when they run against someone playing them hard.

You should know better than to trip someone that is cut from this "mold". If they are all the same, you should have expected a sucker punch. I know you are going to argue this, which I understand completely. I am just a neutral party anyway.

Oh hell no. You made a report, it's on record, you did the right thing there. The two of you are both at fault, morally. He messed with you, you messed back, he hit you, blah blah blah. It's life man, let it go. Fights are a part of life when people mess with others. I mean, I'm not saying you DESERVED to get hit at all, but, I'd say it should be settled. He hit you in retaliation to something you did, rightfully or not. You did the right thing by getting a report. I'd let it go. If he comes after you again, beat his ass and THEN press charges. If he comes at you, you have every legal right to defend yourself. He started it, you finished it, you press charges, he goes to jail. Seems like the proper way to handle the situation to me.
