View Full Version : Magnaflow exaust
5speed90 10-22-2006, 05:09 AM magnaflow exaust was installed in my car while i was at school, lol. the funny thing is that when i got in my car, it sounded BADASS! i didnt think it was my car until i looked under it. my older sister got the extra key to my car and pretty much stole it while i was in school. magnaflow sounds great!
Antrieb 10-22-2006, 10:43 AM Good to know. I plan on doing Magniflow high flow cats, and a Magniflow muffler on my 530i.
///Metal 10-22-2006, 03:24 PM I had Magnaflow on my e30 and I thought it sounded BADASS, too - for the first 2 weeks or so. After that, I just wanted to rip my ears off everytime I drove my car. Honestly, I don't reccomend it.
NORCAL/335i 10-22-2006, 03:52 PM There was a guy on here, leo540i I think, he had a magnaflow muffler on his E34. He posted some sound clips a while back before he sold his car. It sounded mean.:cool

EngPhys09 10-22-2006, 04:52 PM How easy was that to instal? Would it be easy just to replace the rear muffler with one?

Any decent exhaust shop would be able to do it. It shouldn't cost any more than $200.00 including the muffler.
EngPhys09 10-22-2006, 05:02 PM I got a quote of 650$ on the stock bosal replacement, from speedy.
But this magnaflow looks sweet and i'd like to do it myself if possible just fab up from the resonantor back. Just need somethign simple for now, eventually planning a swap for a S50 swap :) and would do the exhaust completely over then.
5speed90 10-22-2006, 11:16 PM o man, the exaust sounds so mean for all you guys that want to know. i love gettin in that car and hearing her pur like a cat. so much less restriction on the motor too. i have 2 1/2 pipe from cat back to muffler. ill have pics up soon when i get it on the lift. its crazy how the guy did it too. he ditched both old mufflers, the pancake one in the middle and the fat one in the rear, and it looks like he took two bent tubes, cut them and welded them together so it looks like a wishbone( < ) sort of..... since my cat is 2 in 2 out he put the 2 ends of the new piping in the cat and welded it on, he then cut the end of it off so he can put the 2 1/2 in pipe on to that. its some really trick stuff and it looks good.
get some pics.. I might be doing that soon too and would like to know how others have done it..
4500 RPM 10-23-2006, 01:36 AM I never realized how much an E34 needs a good exhuast. I don't really know what my exhaust sounds like because it's so quiet.
A Remus should be a nice improvement, or a Magnaflow muffler. :)
Gunslinger 10-23-2006, 12:15 PM What's the part number for the muffler?
540Hokkenheim 10-23-2006, 07:53 PM I did the Magnaflow a few months ago and it sounds pretty friggin good.

Damn, that does sound nice. Wonder how it'd sound on my M30 motor...

35.7 liter V12 (4 valves per cylinder), around 1800HP
no sound clip, sorry.
moroza 10-23-2006, 11:49 PM A bit much for an E34, hm?
Especially considering that they were open-header engines.
clevertd 10-24-2006, 12:27 AM To the OP: Do you know the part number and can you get a sound clip for us?
///Metal 10-24-2006, 01:05 AM A bit much for an E34, hm?
Exactly. Which is why I do not reccomend Magnaflow on an M30.
Antrieb 10-24-2006, 01:07 AM Anyone have any sound clips on an m60?
ToppedOut525i 10-24-2006, 02:47 PM I've heard that if you simply replace the muffler you will not get any HP gains... is this true?

Yes, you need to do the headers and cats to get any significant gains, however they are small.

How are the gains significant if they are small?

(sorry.. had to say it:rolleyes )
Basically, even if it's small gains, it'll all add up.
konarider98 10-24-2006, 06:52 PM I just scoreed a Tri-flo cat back exhaust for my 90 535i on ebay for less than 400 shipped. it should be here tomarrow and ive already got some racing cats. i have heard that tri flo exhaust's are very loud. but anyone with a soundclip of a triflo on an M30? now if i could only get some damn headers for an M30 :(

dbrumbach 10-25-2006, 09:11 AM Why mess with perfection. If an aftermarket exhaust were better than stock don't you think the BMW engineers would have put one in the car? Over loud exhaust is obnoxious, and degrading to the fine e34 automobile. I owned a 90 525i for 11yrs and the stock exhaust note was perfect. Don't mess with perfection and don't annoy your neighbors!

My old 525i was obnoxiously loud but the magniflow sounds good to me. I like to have a little rumble to announce my presence though. I realize its not for everyone :D
Plus, if you do the whole exhaust there are some power gains to be had.
DannyH4 10-25-2006, 10:03 AM I likewhen you can hear the exaust too. so I am going to look into getting a magniflow. any pictures?

BMRSEB 10-25-2006, 03:18 PM I have the Magnaflow 12XXX, can't remember the model number. Anyway, I had 2.25" pipes from the cats all the way to the Magnaflow muffler. The resonator was also removed (more on that).. Well, it sounds incredible at WOT and a nice rumble at idle.
Now, as far as the resonator, honestly, I should have kept it b/c when you're stuck in traffic or just tooling around town the droning can get a little annoying. I would definitely recommend getting the Magnaflow, but test the setup first with resonator in place, for the sound. If you want more sound and can deal with some droning in traffic/slow speeds then "take it all off". :)
I might eventually look into some sort of smaller resonator at a later point. But, with all the weight savings from removing the very heavy stock muffler and (equally?) heavy resonator, coupled with the improved exhaust flow, I'm sure I've gained a few ponies..:devillook
That being said, I still love the sound going past tunnels, overpasses, etc., at speed, sounds badass!! BTW, my sig shows the stock muffler.. I'll get pics later..

I just did a resonator delete and retained the stock muffler.. it did almost nothing to the sound.. Most of the sound is controlled by the muffler if my deductive reasoning serve me correctly.

Just goes to show you how well-designed the stock muffler is for sound reduction! Heck, even the engine cover has sound deadening on it!!
Our cars were originally designed for the executive who wants a fast car, with smooth, quiet, power delivery.. Not for us, second/third generation owners..:evil2
Trust me, if you remove that stock muffler (along with your resonator delete) and go with a flow-thru design such as the Magnaflow's you'll hear it!!
tfritz 10-30-2006, 10:55 PM Thats wierd... I removed my resonator and retained the stock muffler, although it didn't increase the noise a bunch it messed with the tone and it sounded like crap! while accelerating under usual throttle it would kind of make a rattle or raspy noise -kind of sounded like a ricer with a fart can.

Perhaps the M50 muffler is not as bulky as the M60 muffler.. My resonator delete changed the tone of the exhaust slightly but didnt make it louder or sportier. I kindna wanted the car to sound like a muscle car if that is possible.

And as far as your car Tfritz, it's an M50 I6 (as you undoubtedly know), it's NOT going to sound the same as a V8, no matter what you do..

blumatrix 01-28-2007, 07:46 PM did a search and couldn't find anything on this...
i assume the m30, m50, and m60 mufflers are all different since the motors are all different. right?
what about the piping? are they all different sizes?
the reason i ask is, my 525i has a small hole in the muffler and it'll cost me $20-30 to have a shop weld it, or i can get an OE muffler from a 535i from a local guy w/ 6k miles on it for $50. he said the 525i has 2" piping while the 535i has 2.25" piping so it may not fit.
any thoughts?
5mall5nail5 01-28-2007, 08:10 PM That's actually correct - M20 vs M50 motors are different piping and M30 vs M50 vs M5 are different too. Just weld the muffler for $20
blumatrix 01-28-2007, 08:13 PM got it.
thx
ToppedOut525i 01-28-2007, 08:53 PM if i keep the stock resonator and cats but put a magnaflow on my M50 will it just be a rumble or will it be too loud? Cuz im goin for a sporty rumble, not a make ur head hurt noise. Im hoping that since its an inline 6 i wont have to worry about it being too loud. Any thoughts?

agreed;
would anyone happen to have a magnaflow setup on their m50 powered bimmer, or have a sound clip?
i hope to do some exhaust work, and my main fear is having it sound like a ricer :shifty. the V8 has the bitchin' rumble, but not so much for the straight-6.

I have a magnaflow on my car, though I have a 3" exhaust no cats no resonator, just an 8" round magnaflow 3" in 3" out.
Here's a link to a video if you care to see, obviously theres a little more going on in the engine bay but you get the idea.

I relocated it because of the fiberglassed touch screen in the center dash. It wasn't hard - I just extended the wiring one for one, meaning I simply cut and soldered in about 10" of wiring - only about 6" was necessary but I like wiggle room. All wire tied neatly out of the way of course. Then I cut the blank and fit the switches in there. I need to still bondo/paint the switch panel, you can see some "cuts" in it still. Too many projects going on though.
Redfish 01-29-2007, 06:55 AM any sound clips of a M60b30 ?
e34life 01-29-2007, 03:16 PM i have magnaflow, with a resonator delete...its a lil too loud, but i like it, ill have a sound clip up before the end of the day
