It was supposed to happen in July (phasing out front license plate), but the vote was supposed to be pushed back to February 2003. Does anyone know for sure whether or not this will happen?

I haven't heard of this until now, but if they do vote to remove the front plate requirement then I'll think about possibly registering my car in VA. Until that happens I'm keeping my PA plates :)

Does anyone know if it is ok to leave the plate off in MD?

Friend of mine tested that law and sure enough was ticketed for not having front plate. I wouldn't do it.

Preppy, I have never had a front license plate here in MD for the past 11 yrs. I keep it the the trunk. I have been stopped for it once and questioned about it once in those 11 yrs. I wouldn't worry about. I just explain that I do understand that there is a law requiring a front license plate but I have yet to get the front bracket for it. I have always been let off.

Oh alright. Whew. I still keep the plate in my car though, so if I get pulled over, I pull it out and tell them that it fell off in the parking lot when a shopping cart hit it :devillook :D

Chris - don't worry. I haven't run a front plate in MD (or VA for that matter) pretty much since I've been driving. I've only been questioned once because the car had attention brought to it by one of those "license plate blurrers" for red light cameras. One cop hassled me about it and another asked me where I got it because he wanted one!

Nice thing about being in the military. I am a FL resident stationed in VA which means FL tags, which means no front plate :D !!!!!

My front plate is in the windshield of my vehicles. The cops do not seem to mind as long as it is not hidden or obstructed from view (in either the State of Maryland or Virginia).

As far as that piece of legislation passing, since VA adheres to archaic legal principles, I would be surprised if they rescinded the requirement for front license plates. I mean what the hell, they still call things "writs"....

I've been driving my M5 for 2 years with no front plate, even passed inspections no problem. I've been pulled over in DC for it once, got questioned, let off without incident. You MUST have the front tag on display (e.g. on dash in front windshield) if you park in DC, otherwise you get a $100 ticket. Ask me how I know. Also, don't park in DC with expired tags, even if you have the sticker coming in the mail, another $100 ticket. I appealed, they said too bad. No sticker, cough up $100. Fucking DC laws suck. Catch some fucking criminals instead.

I was watching that issue too. Even wrote to my rep about it. But I thought it was shot down, not delayed, but killed. Any articles on it anyone is aware of?

I was without a front plate on both of my cars for 3 years until I got a ticket last year on Route 29 (going to C'Ville) and it cost me $50. I wasn't speeding or anything, and he wouldn't have pulled me over if I had a front plate on.

So, I put the plate back on and am "lawful" now.

So does anyone know the legality of the license plate blurrers?

I know they're illegal in MD, I'm assuming the same in VA, too. I'll test it out in VA when I bring my car back to school!

VA, especially Arlington Cty, is notorious for writing no front tag tickets for parked vehicles.. be careful.

Got pulled over just for that by one sitting on the I-66 eastbound offramp to Ballston. DC will also parking ticket out of state cars.

Well it is now February 2003... any word on the issue of front license plates being phased out?

I got pulled over a couple weeks ago in newport news for no front plate. I was also speeding, but i saw the cop and slowed down to about 10 over before i passed the street he was stopped at, and didnt get a ticket. He also did see the V1 thank god.:D

My friend who owns a mark II jetta got pulled over and ticketed as he was pulling out of his driveway for having no license plate in the front, but I think it was because the cop was having a bad day or something and didn't like the fact that in place of a front license plate he has a euro plate that says "Shocker" haha. He didn't seem very happy at all. Oh well, 50 dollar ticket, but a lot of people drive without them and get no trouble, I used to until my friend got ticketed. Guess it just depends on the situation.

Wait, if it was passed, does that mean we will no longer need 2 license plates? I'm confused.

I havent had one on my car since I got my reiger kit but, just recently I bought a euro plate with my same numbers and placed it on the front of my car. We'll just have to see if the locals like it or not...lol

woaw....I haven't heard crap about this before. I do get alot of shit from my parents though about not having a front plate on. but if it was pushed back til feb 2003, that means by the end of today I wouldn't have to worry. I believe MD does require it as well

The bill was attempting to make it legal to only have one plate. Currently (and in the future since it failed) you are required to have front and rear plates in Virginia. The only way you wouldn't have to worry about this by the end of today would be if you attached your front plate.

Three or four years ago, i got two of these. First , I get a $50 ticket for not having a license plate up front at all. (I had a 240sx at the time, with no mounting holes/bracket in the front bumper) So about 2 months later, I got a $50 ticket in annapolis for not having my front license PROPERLY mounted. It was in my winshield, propped up. The second time, I think the cop was just looking to give me a ticket for something, he drove beside my car, then behind me, then in front of me, for about 5 minutes before he pulled me over.

its actually more illegal to have it in your front windshield since it obstructs the drivers view, plus I think it looks really cheap doing that, but oh well, I'm still not putting my plate back on
