View Full Version : 1999 E38 740I Sport 106k Miles worth getting?
Leonwho 10-21-2006, 12:31 AM I was wondering if a 1999 E38 740I Sport 106k Miles is worth getting?
It seems like it's in excellent cosmetic condition, I was wondering if there's any known problems I should look for, also will I be able to get many more miles out of his car? Also what's a decent price I should offer upon it?
Thanks!
(PS - It has navi, and privacy glass, along with sun-shades.)

Only check to see if it's been in an accident, run carfax using the VIN. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a mechanic run some tests on it to see if the engine block is good.
Other than that, it's good to buy. There's no "known problems" that would make it a bad car to buy. There are of course a good number of things that need regular-maintenance replacing, which is the case in any car that's over 100K miles.
As for the price, use www.autotrader.com to run a search on all 1999 740i for sale. Set the distance to "unlimited" and then notice they highs and lows for similar milage.
01sport 10-21-2006, 01:07 AM My 01 has 81k and I wouldn't dream of letting it go. I plan on keeping it well past 106k. However mine is in pretty good shape. So what you have to do is find out the condition of the car.
At 80k my 740 needed suspension bushings, struts, stering components, battery, radiator and expansion tank. 100k cars commonly need steering hoses, MAF, OSV, O2 sensors as well. Then there is brakes, tires and tranny service. If the car has service records you may be able to eliminate some of these repairs/maintenance.
Take the car to a mechanic to see what it needs and get an estimate.
A 740 in top condition with 100k on it will cost a couple thousand dollars a year to keep in top condition. Maybe not every year but over the long run.
bkentopp 10-21-2006, 10:12 AM I bought an 2001 sport package with 99,320 miles not that it matters it was certified to 100,000 miles.
I paid $17,800. Location also counts for resale price, I live in Wisconsin.
Dealer replaced front rotors, L front caliper, new tires, new spare, repaired dents on trunk and hood, included service inspection II, new floor mats.
Definately have a pre purchase inspection performed by your local independent BMW shop not a dealer, they'll tell you the real deal. Run the vin# as previously mentined, car fax/history report and if the car was dealer maintained get the history of maintenance from the dealer.
If there is any thing you don't like about the car have it addressed, if seller is not willing to or does not take any money off the sale price of the car I would walk away. Not that the car would be bad but, you could find someone who is willing to work with you.
I would imagine a fair price would be around $14,000.
Oh yeah failed to mention, ROCK SOLID CARS!
homer2003 10-22-2006, 07:56 PM You shouldn't worry about it... its a Bimmer, as long as the oil is changed these motors go for 500k for fun... Just test drive it and see how the suspension is otherwise I wouldn't worry about the milage too much. At 100k it just got broken in... Most major engine problems show up before 50k anyway..

Well, you have only 25k miles to go then....... :lol :lol
