Hi all, I want to change the aftermarket h/u in my '95 M3 with a Nak CD-400. I've heard they have quality issues, but exactly what is it that breaks most often? The CD player? If the CD breaks, does the radio and AUX still play?

What I care about the most is clean looks and AUX input (for my iPod), so if the most common problem is CD playback and nothing else then I'll risk buying one.

Yes, the disc loader is the most common issue in my experience.

But in that case, buy a CD 40 or 45 off of ebay. Better looking than the 400. Same QC issue.

I have used CD 40/45 (z) HU's for several years in my Miatas and have not had any issues. IMHO they are the 'budget audiophile' chioce for a HU.

I had a 40z in my last car for 5 years. Sounded great the whole time.

The last 4 years the CD came out 15% as far as it should 80% of the time. Sometimes it came out all the way (rarely).

The display on the cd-400 is damn near yellow. Keep that in mind if you are looking for an illumination match.

That's exactly what I'm looking for - stock looks both during the day and at night. I thought the CD-400 was pretty close to factory illumination after reading about it on BSW website?

I have the CD 400 in my 1988 635CSI. I too luv the looks and sound but there are draw backs. If you are looking for bells and whistles then you certain will not find them with this player. Also the CD skips much more than any CD player I have ever owned. Would I buy another? Honestly I would think long and hard about it. The looks really mesh well with all BMW and the CD sound quality is really nice. Tuner section is not good and it skips alot. I guess you just really have to decide what is most important to you.

There are several posts here in the last 6 months that indicate it's orange, but not that close a match.

You can change the color from orange to green. You can also change the brightness. The color does match well with BMW lights.
