Just wanted to know from you 7 guys if this is a good deal or not?
dborja 10-20-2006, 12:45 PM looks good to me although i defer to others on this board who are more in tune with prices. make sure you ask lots of questions of the dealer and, if possible, a pre-purchase inspection
I was reading the description of the car and it suddenly turned into a commercial for the dealership ... oh well.
I think it is a good deal. The price seems good, and the car looks clean. The most important thing you need to know about this car is whether or not it has been in an accident. Find that out by carfaxing the VIN. Also, take it to a mechanic and have him do a compression test and a leak down test.
Now, keep in mind that this car is over 10 years old and has over 100K miles, so it might need a little bit of work. If the pixels in the display are out and the CD skips, that's normal. If some smoke comes out the tail pipe, then you probably need some work done on the air intake manifold or new O2s, but again that's normal. And if the engine block is cracked, then have them replace the block while it's under warrenty.
However, if the frame is bent (from an accident), then that would be a deal-breaker.

thatracer 10-20-2006, 01:08 PM did they ever make 7 series manual?
iwant740speed 10-20-2006, 01:15 PM i think its a good deal
sleepy740 10-20-2006, 08:53 PM did they ever make 7 series manual?
they made some e32 manuals
however, there have been some conversions with a six speed from the 540
edit-
btw, no e38 manuals made it to the States from the factory...only in europe
i dont know why i left that out :(
Cody Thomson 10-20-2006, 09:25 PM I would disagree somewhat and say that while I concur it isn't a bad deal, I you could find a better deal out there with maybe a "newer" model. Don't know if the engine has been replaced or not. I think it's possible you could get more for your money with maybe a different model- but just my thoughts.

+1
I Agree. The price is nice, but it would be worth it to spend more for a newer model. Even if it's just one year newer, a '96 is better.
... or, if you really want to be a man among men, you'll buy a '98.
crewdog843 10-21-2006, 12:54 AM You've owned a fiver, so you should have a good idea of BMW expenses.....
You are asking for trouble by looking at a 10-year-old seven....even if it was driven by a little old lady only to church on Sundays (or maybe I should say 'especially if it was driven....'). Read e38.org about sevens....and read this forum as far back as you can from people with the older sevens....the problems one could run up on with the older cars will curdle a maggot's spit, yet their owners love them while trying to restyle them to '01 standards.
If money is the problem, this is not the car for you (unless you have a great set of tools, a large garage, a good shop manual and lots of enthusiastic friends with unlimited supplies of beer). If you have the wherewithall to afford a newer seven, you can stay ahead of the problems through preventive maintenance a lot easier. In your neck of the woods, you should be able to find lots of them.
The closer you get to '01, the closer you get to perfection in this particular car and this particular body style....beyond '01, you get to start all over again...with a car that looks like every new Camry on the road. Sorry, Li's.....someone had to say it. Is it really true that the entire design team for the '02 was fired, or was it the '03?

Us 7-series (Gods among men) owners use http://www.e38.org/ in place of a maintenance manual. It's a great website for DIY-ers. And everyone in this forum will be very helpful as well.
So, if you really like the car, I say buy it!
I don't think you're "asking for trouble" if you own a 10-year-old car. I plan on getting at least 300K miles out of my E38.
