Hey guys, long time lurker and seldom post as I just purchased my 89 in April. I am going to flush my cooling system this weekend and want to know how best to refill it. There is no cap on the radiator and it seem strange to try an fill via the expansion tank. Should I fill via the thermostat housing? I will be replacing the cap and thermostat as well...

Thanks,

I replaced my T-stat back in the spring and I filled mine up through the expansion tank. It just takes a while to do it. One thing to know is to loosen the bleed screw which is located just to the rear of the T-stat.

Do not start this project without a good set of instructions. There are instructions on how to do it here on this site and if its not done right the engine will run hot. I'm sure someone will post the correct procedure.

yes - it is fine to fill the system via the expansion tank. the thing to remember is not to get in a hurry.

once you have filled it and started the engine, keep close track of the temperature gauge. the system is tempermental with regards to air pockets.

the bleeder screw, which is opened to allow air to escape, is positioned on the upper radiator hose hose fitting on top of the engine. it may take a couple attempts to clear out all of the air.

if the coolant temperature rises to high, shut the engine off, wait a bit and start over.
