Tuesday I caught a grape sized rock off a street sweeper on the side of the highway. My windshield is cracked. It needs to be replaced.

Car is a 2/99 e36 M3.

I need a full replacement glass, OEM is a must.
I'm not interested in aftermarket glasses in the least.

Classic BMW quoted me $520 total, which includes installation with a new trim seal and state inspection. They won't waive the state inspection as they say the sticker cannot be removed intact. I know for a fact it can when done properly.. but whatever thats fine.

replica CSL = okay
replica glass = not?

safelite just did mine the other day.. came to my job, did it while i was working, called me when they were done.. $199 and change installed, and they moved my sticker and all...

Topher I'm glad you are happy with your drive-by glass installation. I wont be.

Aftermarket glass does not have the BMW roundel on it to match the rest of the factory glass on the car. Nor is it made to the same standards.

I do not want aftermarket glass by any manufacturer. I don't care if you don't understand the merits behind it or the differences between the 2. Hell I don't even expect you to see the differences when they are pointed out to you.

All that matters is that I don't want aftermarket, and I won't be happy with it. As previously stated OEM glass is a must.

i guess i'm just trying to understand why you wont settle for glass without a little 1/8" bmw symbol and you will settle on wheels without em... *shrug*

OEM is what the car has now. OEM is what it will have once it is replaced.

Again I don't care if you don't understand that. Unless you have a source for a OE windshield, installed, more reasonable then Classic then please just don't post.

do your underpants have 1/8" bmw roundel on them too?

seriously man, your car is not a ferrari. i'm sure that new OEM glass will get destroyed in few months again.

oh and who wants your production date? if you know so much about these cars then you should know that glass is all the same regardless the production date.

care to educate me?

tell me the "merits" behind it... tell me the differences... tell me how one is worth over $300 more than the other.... in fit, form, function, and any other way... go ahead... school me...

It's rather surpising that you drive a BMW considering you want EVERYTHING to be perfect.

wait, why don't you sue the sweeper, make sure you sue them for the cost of not only the windshield, install, and sticker swap, but also for your time and mileage driving to/from estimates, your time for looking things up, cell phone minute costs... be sure to visit regularly, keep us updated on every step of it, and explain exact costs to the penny

because we all care

Brilliant idea. Thats what I will do.

As for the rest of you, I'm sorry you find yourself unable to understand my desires and are such have to attack me to make yourselves feel better about it. I hope the lot of you find karma on its way back around.

No... my desires differ from your own. I think its safe to assume all of you would be happy with your aftermarket glass. Thats fine. I don't feel the need to attack you because of that.

The point here is simple. I'd like a OEM glass, and I'd like it under the $500 price point. I know it won't go much lower (I know what the cost is on the OEM glass) but I'd like to "shop around" so to speak.

There is absolutely no need for a bunch of children to attack someone because they won't settle for an aftermarket glass. My car has a OEM glass, and the previous owner paid a pretty penny to have it replaced less then a year ago when it was broken. It was "as new" save for a couple very insignificant sand pits.

Grow up kids.

what's so good about OEM glass compared to anything else.. you've yet to provide a real rationale other than "omg i want"

my aftermarket one is "as new" and DOESNT have any "insignificant sand pits".. which means so far, my $199 one is better than your "pretty penny" one

Again its not my job to explain my reasoning to you. It is your job however to respect my wishes as stated 17 posts ago.

Unless you have a source for a OE windshield, installed, more reasonable then Classic then please just don't post.

Simple simple request kids.

Tell ya what, if it will help you sleep better at night call BMW up and ask them to start producing the CSL wheels in 18x8.5 with an offset of 35-40.

If and when they do this I will give my disposable replica wheels to the first taker and by myself some genuine ones.

Up until that day however I will continue to rock the replicas as I have no desire to run 19's on my car.

It just blows my mind that you guys completely don't understand the point of this thread, and instead of just letting it go and clicking on a different thread instead... you just attack me for no reason other then your own inability to comprehend someones desire to replace a OEM glass with another OEM glass.

This thread isn't about what aftermarket parts anyone has on thier car. Its about my desire to get a OEM glass at a reasonable price.

Ok guys, I kinda don't understand it. most of you guys won't put aftermarket body parts on your car for some odd reason. Even though they are capa ceritfied and DOT approved. but you guys are harping him for wanting OEM glass. Its his car and his money. Let him do as he chooses...

i can understand why you want the factory glass, if you have the extra 350 then do it. If it were me tho, i would go with something that works just as well and dosent cost as much, cause i dont intend on selling my car

wow....

300 from that guys doesnt seem bad if you are willing to DIY, I cant. I dont have the skills or tools so I have to get owned by the dealer when I had my glass replaced

Now this is how this thread should have gone... if people could just answer the question at hand without attacking people, things would be so much easier.
