I have an e21 with what I was told is a 2002 motor in it. Is there anyway to find out what model year the enginge is from?

This car has the dual diaphram vacuum advance. The electronic valve that has 2 wires (+ and -) I have a question about. What does the positive side suppose to hook up to?

There is a sensor in screwed into the intake manifold. It looks like an engine/hood hood temperature sensor. What is this for? There is nothing hooked up to it.

The cabureuter has Weber written on it and I could only find Solex in my Chilton Manual. The chilton is misguiding because it has no details and tries to cover to much. It also has lots of incorrect info. There are no bentleys for the 2002 or the e21. What are the alternatives?

engine has no EGR or Smog pump. I am guessing they were removed.

The car has the e21 intake fuel pump which I don't know if it operates and a second electric fuel pump (not the e21) underneath. There is no mechanical fuel pump.

I just bought this car a couple weeks ago from a friend but will not see him for a while so any help is appreciated. At this point I suspect that it has a different carburetor on it and that temp sensor was for the old carburetor so it serves no purpose. I still need to know what the positve wire on the dual diaphram vacuum control valve hooks up to? And what year is this motor?

Thanks,
Dave

Check your vin. Early E 21s were carbed. Vin should be on the block. Webers are used as a reliable upgrade. Go to 2002 faq for lots of info on the webers and basics of the BMW M 10 engine.

It is a 1980 so it is suppose to have that Bosch CISsy stuff that was on all of my old Audis. The previous motor had reportedly run out of oil. Thanks for the reply, I will have to check out the FAQs to find out the deal with that wire.

Try checking the motor's VIN.

Here's emissions diagrams that may help once you find out what year the motor is.

No E21s officially imported into the USA had carbs. Euro E21s had carbs & injection depending on the model.
