View Full Version : Anyone want to lend me a hand?
Kevin E21 10-11-2006, 12:43 AM I'm going to order some parts. I really need to do my brakes and suspension soon. I have absolutely zero knowledge on how to do this.
Does anyone with a set of tools and some garage space want to help me out? I really want to learn to do this kind of stuff, but I don't have the tools or facilities right now, and I don't want to pay my mechanic to do it.
I would offer a pack of beer, but I am underage, so it'll be some soda and some pizzas on me to anyone who helps me out.
Maybe we could make this a small meet and we could all work on our cars.
Anyone interested?

Kevin E21 10-11-2006, 10:57 AM Alright. Where and when is a good time/place?
I'd like to do this next week if possible.
VenomRS4 10-11-2006, 11:59 AM Where you at? I just did coilovers in my car. It was my first time doing it. Took a while but now I have a good idea on how to do it and can prob do it again in 1/3 the time. Ohh, and brakes and a walk in the park. Im always down for a meet.
one more thing....what kind of suspension are you putting in your car?

I'm in Lynnfield, about 15 mins. north of Boston. I'll meet up anywhere really, but I would prefer not to drive more than an hour to an hour and a half.
Not sure exactly what I am doing for suspension, but probably some bilsten sport shocks and some lowering springs. I don't know what kind of springs to get. Are BavAuto springs any good?
bungy42 10-11-2006, 03:28 PM You missed out on a good wrenching day at my house just a few weeks ago. :( I don't think I'm up for hosting another one this soon. Unless, of course, some of you want to help do some wrenching on my Jetta. :D
VenomRS4 10-11-2006, 03:30 PM Bav Auto ones are decient. I have never heard of any problems with them. But the problem is going to be if they are mcphearson (spelling?) struts. I do not have a spring compressor. So if the springs need to be put on the shocks first, I cant help you with that.
PixMan 10-11-2006, 08:58 PM I have a spring compressor set, good ones. I also have quite a few tools, some good, some cheap. I have done every piece of suspension on my E28, so I know what to expect. Expect to need air tools to get the job done. It helps tremendously. If the E21 is anythng like the E28 in the shocks, you'll need spring compressors to get the shock cartridges changed.
What I don't have is a garage. If you have one of those, I can lend my expertise. I strongly suggest getting new spring dampers, the rubber pads for each end of the springs, plus the end-of-travel bumpers and dust covers. On a car that old, those bits are bound to be junk too. Look to Eibach for springs, but call Steve Haygood of Thomaston GA for ALL your parts! His prices can't be beat, and you'll have everything in a couple days.

Kevin E21 10-12-2006, 07:26 AM Ok, thanks PixMan!
So who's got the garage space?
Gread 10-12-2006, 10:57 AM If you wanted to come down to Hingham MA, I'll give you a hand at my garage. I have a lift and plenty of airtools, torches and a wide selection of b.f. hammers. It would have to be this weekend, I'm away racing the following 2 weekends

Don't think I could do it this weekend. I have work and a bunch of other stuff going on. I'll let you know if anything changes.
Kevin E21 10-12-2006, 04:22 PM Well I might just have my mechanic do the suspension only because I don't think I have enough money for it all right now, and I think it will just be easier to have him do it.
I would like to do the brakes though, so someone could help me with that, but let me find out exactly what it needs before I order the parts.
