View Full Version : Kumho V710 experience on track?
TXBDan 10-09-2006, 12:41 PM Howdy,
Well. I'm going to run BSP or SM for autox next year which will require some rcomps.. V710s would be the way to go for autox... BUT i'd like to run whatever rcomp i get on track for a couple HPDEs next year.. Would that destroy the low temp V710s? I MUST get an entire autox season plus whatever track stuff i decide on out of the tires..
If not i could try V700s.. RA1s.. but i wonder how much slower they are for autox.. Any experience/input here?
Any other suggestions for a do-all Rcomp? ha ha ha i know...
TeamSlowdotOrg 10-09-2006, 12:43 PM On a 2300 lb SM, I was getting 12 sessions out of 205/50-15 V710's and selling them to autocrossers who used them until they corded, which was about half a season.
YMMV, but on an SM/BSP car you're using a lot more tire so I wouldn't expect wear to be THAT much worse, even with a shload more power and weight.
Now I have to use RA-1's, which don't last nearly as long.

So you are saying you get more wear out of v710's vs RA 1's for on track use?.....Im surprised. You say 12 sessions...so like 12 20 min runs?... It varies so from driver/car to d/car.....I get like 30 20 min sessions on RA's on an e 30 ...........
TXBDan 10-09-2006, 01:01 PM well my car would be technically quite underprepped for SM. id be on 245s as i dont want to cut/flare my stock fenders.
Yeh, do define a session. I'm really surprised/happy to see that many out of them.
Hammm3 10-09-2006, 02:23 PM Great tire....
Sean T. won Nasa GTS 3 Nationals on them.
They also hold a few track records in both CCA and Nasa.
Jordantii 10-09-2006, 03:29 PM I think they are talking AutoX not track.
TXBDan 10-09-2006, 03:43 PM both...

JeremyS 10-10-2006, 11:25 AM 710s like high temps on track. Refer to the technical specs on kumho's site. They are actually road race tires that happen to also work well at low temps and thus are good for autox. As for your original question - they are very durable and will last a full season as long as your car is set up correctly and you only do a couple of DEs.
Howdy,
Would that destroy the low temp V710s?
krisko 10-10-2006, 12:02 PM I attained personal best lap times on 3 tracks with V710s. I don't have much input on how long they last but I noticed no drop off of speed after 8 30 minute sessions and the tires still look great.
One tire developed a huge bubble on the inside wall...hopefully it's an isolated thing. I'm sure Kumho would like to get a look at that tire.
TXBDan 10-10-2006, 12:19 PM wow. perhaps these are the.. BEST? TIRE? EVAR?!
:)

What size were you using? 245/45/17 or 245/35/18s?
tmachine 10-10-2006, 12:52 PM I don't know what a "season" is for autoxing since I just run at the local club events, but I run v710s on my z4 and love them. Little wear after 5 events. Dimples and grooves are mostly there. 1/8" deep on rears, 1/16" on fronts.
Courses are over a mile long and we get 11+ runs per event (17+ runs with the P-club). I also run wide 275 rears, 245 front so I am wearing the fronts more than the rears because of the understeer. I can't believe the difference over the Advan-032Rs.
krisko 10-10-2006, 01:56 PM What size were you using? 245/45/17 or 245/35/18s?
The 17's and no, I don't get rubbing anywhere. My car is fairly high, much taller than other IP cars.
Hammm3 10-10-2006, 02:10 PM What size were you using? 245/45/17 or 245/35/18s?
I have run both.
TeamSlowdotOrg 10-11-2006, 04:34 PM So you are saying you get more wear out of v710's vs RA 1's for on track use?.....Im surprised. You say 12 sessions...so like 12 20 min runs?... It varies so from driver/car to d/car.....I get like 30 20 min sessions on RA's on an e 30 ...........I'm talking about race and qualifying sessions, the wear rate is just a bit different for a race than a DE. :) I also shave my RA-1's to 3/32" to keep from wasting several sessions waiting for them to get good.

Sure I understand that,....but still, you consider the kumho to wear longer than RA 1's?
and you know.....my DE pace may be faster than your race pace!*!!
TeamSlowdotOrg 10-11-2006, 05:14 PM Sure I understand that,....but still, you consider the kumho to wear longer than RA 1's?
Yes. Shaved RA1's vs V710's, the 710's wear better and more consistently. I don't care what your DE pace is. I'm talking about wear rate, not speed.

I was just trying to get a rise out of you.....I hear ya...and it makes sense.
I am surprised though about your experience w/ wear...... RA 1's seem to wear like iron.
JS154 10-11-2006, 10:55 PM I've raced on them at NHIS in the fall, grip was good in the cold, but they overheat easily and take a long time to come back. I will be running on Hoosiers again from now on. They lasted about 7 heat cycles before they really started to go away, similar to the Hoosiers.
