Okay, for those of you that drive your Bimmers in the winter, when are you planning to put your winter setups on? I'm debating some time in the next couple weeks, but definitely by November.

View Full Version : When is everyone switching to winter tires/wheels? CirrusSR22 10-09-2006, 12:13 AM Ahh, I just logged on to make this thread! Yeah, snow is forecast for the Twin Cities on Wed. & Thur. It'll probably just be a dusting/quick-melter though, since the ground is still so warm. I was planning on waiting until the first snow that's forecast to stick, but nightmares of last year has me thinking twice. Last winter/spring I took my Blizzaks off shortly before one of those 12" storms we had. Bad times.... :( themadhatter 10-09-2006, 12:18 AM I usually do the swap around mid-november but never before November as the snow and temps don't start to fall before that in my area. beatniks325 10-09-2006, 09:55 AM we got snow forecast for thursday too but i would wait until the temps drop a little more. depending on what kind of snow tires you have, the warm roads in warm temps will cause faster wearing. rcs328 10-09-2006, 10:36 AM It's forecast to be fairly cold Wed and Thurs - along with snow showers... I'll be swapping the winters on daily driver Tuesday night. I've driven big, fat, wide, low profile summer tires in the snow once (the day after I bought my E36 - about 8 years ago...) and vowed never to do it again. I was supposed to be in Brainerd this upcoming Thursday night with the track car and was seriously contemplating putting my snow tires on instead of my usual street/rain tires (there's snow in the forecast for Thursday night in Brainerd....) Now that I'm going up Friday afternoon, I plan on leaving the S-03's on (should be relatively warm Friday....) Reedo 10-09-2006, 10:48 AM I debating throwing them on tomorrow night and then maybe taking them off Thursday night and switching back to the Pilot Sports and 18's for the weekend. I have 17's with Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2's ///MeisterBrau 10-09-2006, 07:02 PM usually run winter treads from thanksgiving weekend to easter weekend. waterboy420 10-10-2006, 12:30 AM Putting snow tires on the weekend after Halloween. Any earlier in the upper midwest puts too much wear on the tires. Reedo 10-10-2006, 10:45 AM Putting snow tires on the weekend after Halloween. Any earlier in the upper midwest puts too much wear on the tires. My brother-in-law is storing his Expedition at my house, so if it gets nasty in the next couple days, I'll just take that. Never thought to use it until yesterday. Boosted 10-10-2006, 05:45 PM I will be putting the E30 on the road in November! ;) Reedo 10-10-2006, 09:56 PM I will be putting the E30 on the road in November! ;) That could actually be pretty fun :cool Stanza65 10-11-2006, 09:04 AM im doing mine tommorow. 540i6spdWI 10-11-2006, 01:20 PM I've been running winter tires since I bought the car (came with those Dunlop M3's). I plan to have them worn out by spring and will buy some decent summer tires then. What do you all do for rims in the winter? I've just got the stock '97 540 6speed rims (style 19's) but am not sure how resistant to salt and whatnot they are... I'd love to buy an extra set of them, but can justify spending the $ on rims right now... -Brad eeeks 10-11-2006, 01:39 PM Some people watch football after Thanksgiving dinner....I change to snow tires. rcs328 10-11-2006, 02:37 PM What do you all do for rims in the winter? -Brad I've mounted snow tires on my stock wheels and have a nice set of wheels for the summer. You could also look at buying a set of steel wheels w/ snow tires for winter use - not the most fashionable, but they get the job done. Some people watch football after Thanksgiving dinner....I change to snow tires. You'd never last here until Thanksgiving (at least not with Ultra High Performance Summer Tires...) I usually put the snows on the first weekend on November, assuming no major snowfall is forecast earlier. Since our forecasted snow for today kinda fizzled out, I held off on switching mine. If it dumps snow tonight drive the SUV tomorrow and drop the fiance at the bus station on the way to work... eeeks 10-11-2006, 03:41 PM true, but we never get snow that early...(watch me be wrong this year...ahhahah) POS VETT 10-11-2006, 04:20 PM Okay, for those of you that drive your Bimmers in the winter, when are you planning to put your winter setups on? I'm debating some time in the next couple weeks, but definitely by November. The day before the snow :) Reedo 10-11-2006, 07:51 PM true, but we never get snow that early...(watch me be wrong this year...ahhahah) It's not just the snow, it's the cold. I drove my Bimmer to work today and didn't have a problem at all as I drove very conservatively, but decided to take a Maserati Quattroporte out to go get gas at work and the tail end was swinging like a barn gate all over the road. This cold turns those high performance tires into concrete. I'll probably be switching my snows over the first week of November, I think. As for what I use, I have Mille Miglia 17's w/ Dunlop Winter Sport M2's. The OEM 18's are coming off and at some point going to get sandblasted and then powdercoated gloss black this winter. Matthew C Smith 10-11-2006, 09:00 PM It's usually some time around Thanksgiving for me. eeeks 10-12-2006, 10:48 AM tail swingin aint such a BAD thing sometime...heheheh But I take your point. Wonder how the NYC winter will be this year. ding 10-12-2006, 11:15 AM i drove my car till about late novemeber last year, then parked it and pulled out the caddy, but i'll hopefully be driving a vw for work this winter |
