View Full Version : Laguna Seca Video - 4 Laps
jdholder 10-08-2006, 03:20 AM Video of the first 4 laps of the BMWCCA Club Race at Laguna Seca on Sept 23, 2006.
Long story, but I DNF'd this race after missing qualifying and starting from the back of the pack - but this is the first 4 laps of the race.
Post race inspection revealed that my 31lb injectors were actually flowing about 9lb. So the motor was breaking up severely at higher RPM's. Also, the AEM ECU tried to compensate for this by running the injectors at longer and longer duty cycles, ultimately burning up the injector drivers in the AEM ECU and making the ECU fail completely (or so the higher knowledge people tell me).
So - enjoy while it lasts.

wcbimmr328 10-08-2006, 03:55 AM WoW your car is insane. MORE!!!
S.Lang 10-08-2006, 04:19 AM Jon, it wasn't a dive bomb....I pointed you by anyway....you're welcome,though :)
If your car was running like that you should have just stayed with me and we could have had some fun!
If I remember right you lasted one more lap after passing me in 5.
jmitro 10-08-2006, 11:02 AM badass car. but i get the impression your engine isn't pulling :D
qwickm3 10-08-2006, 12:02 PM Just curious as to why you didn't bring it in if you knew the engine was sick. I know you have had quite a few motor problems. Aren't you tired of spending money yet;)

No - I actually like spending money! j/k
Hindsight is 20/20 and I probably should have, but we were also data gathering and trying to figure out WHY it was running poorly - and since this was an SCCA vintage weekend, we only had 2 sessions a day (BMWCCA was invited to run with SCCA Vintage) - so we needed the track time to try and figure it out.
Steve J. 10-08-2006, 05:39 PM What gearing was in the car? Looks like you could benefit from going up a couple notches.
Sounds good, but definitely sounds way off. Hopefully the new inj/ecu fixes will bring back the ponies.
Also, that red tether on the rightside net looks kind sketchy so close to your shifter/hand.
hnoppenberger 10-08-2006, 08:54 PM i need to get into this racing business.
good driving man.
can you fill me in on your engine setup/tranny/rear end?
Steve J. 10-08-2006, 08:59 PM S54, Drysump, AEM, bottom/top end Evosport Built/tuned, 6spd, I believe it has a Kaaz lsd unit as this time.
hnoppenberger 10-08-2006, 09:06 PM i cant believe it was that fast with the injectors being that messed up. thats amazing the engine didnt detonate itself apart.
really really cool dude. id love to have a car like that, eventually, id like to make my car a track only vehicle when i can afford my next street car, but for now id love to mod the engine to just get a slight, and i mean very slight taste of a reponsive, powerful engine like that.

Gearing is 4.45 with a DiffsOnline custom ramp angle LSD - AWESOME UNIT!
I don't know what you mean by "go up a couple of notches" - higher numerically gears? If that is what you meant, then I MIGHT be able to go to a 4.80something, but that would be about it as Willow Springs and Cal Speedway would be close with that gearing. Also, the Motorsport Gearsets get pretty pricey at those ratios.
I thought the same thing about the red right side net release, but I don't even notice it when racing.
Could you post some race videos of your car when healthly, for comparison purposes of course:)?

Ah Nice.
Thats a 4.45, damn, the motor was in worse shape than i thought.
I just mentionde the right side net b/c I saw your hand brush against, i'd try to pull it up a bit, reduce the risk. Small thing but could make a big difference.
Damn if thats a 4.45, and your motor was not healthy, i can't wait to get my damn car done! :evil2

I will, but I have to warn you, when my car is healthy the videos are pretty boring. Just the track in front of me for the first 4 laps, then me lapping cars after that! :)
JClark 10-08-2006, 11:39 PM Jon- Entertaining vid as always, thanks for posting. Have you found the cause of the AEM/injector issue?

Junk/debris inside the Fuel Injectors. We pulled them and sent the to RC for a test/rebuild. They found them to be severely clogged.
The AEM ECU fed the motor fuel by increasing the duty cycle of the poorly flowing injectors until they were basicall at 100% constant duty cycle. The Injector Drivers inside the ECU failed after doing this for (probably) 2 weekends of racing.
New ECU, rebuilt injectors - all is well now.

From where/what? Figured that out yet?

Several thoughts that range from the New fuel hose we used when we switched back from a Fuel Cell to the Stock Fuel tank - maybe is sloughed some material off.
Maybe the new stock fuel tank had some residue in it and the fuel filter didn't do a good job getting it out.
Who knows really!!
