I find most BMW enthusiasts also appreciate the world of Audi,
but you are in a room full of bimmer owners and fanatics,
unbiased advices are hardly expected. :) Like myself..DEFINITELY A 5ER!!:buttrock

5 series is fine in snow with proper tires and a little caution.

if you want power, go 540, economy and reasonable get up and go - 525/8. I have the 528 and while I won't be winning any drag-races, it has plenty of go for my needs - you could also SC a 528 to get more power.

I am new to bmw so i can only give info on my knoweldge of cars.. lol... Well the TT has the 1.8 motor... so getting a 225 is just keeping the same power ur just changing companies.. the 1.8T and the VR6 from VW and the 225 motor (can remember the modle of that motor) are all the same.. so i would say go higer 530 or 540 if u want more out of the motor.. if i am worng someone correct me..

Pe@ce to all the German Cars owners..

what kind of mods do you want to do? Theres coil overs, rims, body kits, spoilers, lighting upgrades, stereo/ navigation/bluetooth upgrades and installs, to supercharging and turbo. sky's the limit.

i too recently sold my TT for an 01 330i

one thing is for sure. jumping from a TT to a 5'er is gonna be a weird jump. I suggest an e46

Audi TT is a fine car, so you clearly have taste.

Obviously, I'm pro 540, since that's what I have. I can't speak to driving the 540 in winter since I'm in GA, but obviously rear drive presents an issue without winter tires. And I don't own a 528, so I'm not going to waste your time speculating about it--people who own them love them, though, and hopefully will share their constructive thoughts.

I have enjoyed every minute of owning my 540, and have put some mods into it.

Just know this: if you are looking for a car to modify, the 540 isn't going to be cheap, at least performance-wise. Can't speak to cosmetics. Whereas there is a ton of stuff for the 3 series (and is a car that is easier to modify and tune), there is a more limited selection of quality performance upgrades for the 540. With limited competition comes a higher price.

Dinan's about the only tuner with a comprehensive offering for the 5, though other tuners offer various items. Dinan isn't cheap, but it is quality stuff, in my experience. Check out the website to get an idea of what you'd be in for with either the 540 or 528 (www.dinanbmw.com (http://www.dinanbmw.com)). You might also want to check out www.beastpower.com (http://www.beastpower.com). Though it is geared toward the M5, there are some items for the 540 too (headers, superchargers, etc.), which can give you an idea of what you are in for.

Bottom line: The 540 has "balls" in stock form. But if you do modify, depending on what you are going to do, you should have a realistic expectation that it will cost some decent money to do right.

Just my two cents.

You're on the right path then. 5ers are great cars, and I highly doubt you'd be fundamentally disappointed with any of them, even the weaker ones.
but i want something with balls that i can mod out over time.
There's the hitch. You can mod any of the E39s, but you're going to be spending serious $$$ for seriously small gains. A 540i, stock, would be faster than your present car, and debately more importantly, much, much torquier. A 528i/5[-speed] isn't too terribly far off from what you have now, and with some mods that gap would shrink more. You didn't mention them, but a 530i would be a little quicker than the 528, and the 525 slower.

Also, i would need to drive it in winder weather. How would a 5 do for my situation?
With winter tires I'm sure it would be manageable, but you would be even better served by a dedicated AWD vehicle, of course.

A 6-speed C5 A6 2.7T actually sounds like it might serve your needs well, and you'd be able to remain in the Audi family, so to speak. The car is very nice and luxurious, doesn't drive half badly, and since it has the B5 S4's engine it has great modding potential, though with the requisite reliability hit. I was shopping with a family member for an AWD sedan, and narrowed it down to the E46 330xi, G35x, and A6 2.7t. The G35 sedan is ugly and reeked of cheap, cheesy Nissan-ness; the 330xi drove like a BMW should(X-Drive haters can hush :nono ); and the A6 was a very nice luxury car, but numb doesn't even begin to describe the drive. It would go where you pointed it, but you could drive straight over the Grand Canyon and the steering would never quite get around to letting you know about it. You could also tell when the turbo spooled up; it wasn't bad, but felt different than a NA engine. I did like the A6 otherwise, though, it was a very nice car.

If you want to mod the performance there is not a lot you can do to a 540 besides SC. Plus Bimmers are expensive to mod.

I'm seriously considering an older American car to mod out for a street racer.

There are tons of parts available at very low prices. Like $ 250 for a set of V8 headers. High perf brand name ported heads for $ 1100 a set. Good name brand new SCs for $ 2500-4500 complete.

All kinds of go fast suspension parts, LSDiffs, etc. It's like a candy store.

If you want to seriously mod a Bimmer get a 3 series. There is a lot of stuff for them compared to a 5 but its also higher priced.

My wife is employed by Volkswagen/Audi. Therefore there is a 06 Audi TT in our garage next to my 97 540 Dinan 5. While the TT is cute and fun to drive, there is no comparison to my 540i.

Do some driving of the 5er's you'll how much more solid the BMW's are.

If you want to performance don't bother modding a 528i...you should just go ahead and get a 540i. However if you want the economy and somewhat lower maintenance then get a 528i or 530i and put some new wheels, tint, and etc. to make it a nice ride. I would suggest you test drive a 525i and compare it with 528i or 530i---if you want to go the latter route. I hope this help. I almost got a 540i but decide to get a 528i for now. You might want to test drive an e46 330i...they are fabulous car!!!

Have you thought about keeping your Audi and the APR chip? www.goapr.com http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/ecu_upgrade_tt.html

We got the 02' Beetle 1.8T chipped with APR and it was a beast!!--totally worth it. just a thought.
