View Full Version : AMB Transponder: 2 quick questions
Bassem 10-04-2006, 11:21 PM Howdy,
A while ago I looked into getting the AMB IT rechargeable transponder for my car, but didn't seem to find any "deals". Is this the case or does someone know the cheapest place to get one? Should I just cough up the list price?
Where is the best place to put these in the engine bay? I have the JT undertray up front, and although it is Al (i.e non-magnetic), so not sure if mounting above it will be possible.
Thanks in advance!

vodomagoo 10-04-2006, 11:33 PM Why rechargeable, are you swaping it between cars? if not id go for the hardwired and i was told all of them like direct line of sight to the ground but ive seen them put about plastic parts before
tigruppe 10-04-2006, 11:36 PM Finding super deals on transponders is pretty tough at times.
For mounting, put the transponder as low and far forward as possible while leaving it somewhat protected.
Bassem 10-04-2006, 11:36 PM Yep, it needs to do duty in two cars. Also, they are both street legal still, so removing the transponder would be nice.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to which areas work. Don't want to hang it off the bumpers in case of an even minor off kicking up enough crap to loosen or damage it.
I'm sure I can figure it out if I dicked with it enough, just nice to learn from other folks experiences.

tigruppe 10-04-2006, 11:40 PM While hardwired is a very good idea, make sure it has its own circuit.
A couple of weeks ago one of the racers that ran with us had his cool suit, transponder and some other data logging system all on the same fuse and popped them during qualifying which cost him a few spots on the grid.
Still hardwired is usually better as a few people forget to charge them a couple of days before the event.
scottn2retro 10-05-2006, 01:37 AM On an e36, I had pop out fog light covers instead of the foglights. I had it up in there (you could get to it/see it if you pulled the cover plate) it was far enough forward of the JT undertray.
For something you are switching between cars, people mount them on the front lower grill.
Kevinlpl 10-05-2006, 02:17 AM I have zip tied the mount to the carbon fiber hose of my CAI inside the box. It has direct site straight down without interference from metal. It is protected and I can clip the transponder in and out for charging. Transponder sits on the side of the hose and is aimed straight down. It has worked flawlessly for me at Willowsprings and Buttonwillow.
B.Watts 10-05-2006, 08:50 AM There's no reason it has to be mounted up front. There are lots of spots around the spare tire well in the back that it could be mounted with no interference between it and the ground.k
jayhudson 10-05-2006, 09:28 AM Deals are hard to find. PCA sells them for a little less but I think they only sell the hardwired version and you have to be a member or have a friend. I also found a deal thru NCRC, one of the HPDE organizations in norcal but I would have had to pay CA sales tax which would have pretty much negated the deal. I ended up ordering direct from AMB.
I mounted mine on the inner wheel well, near the connector for the speed sensor, on the pass side. If a guy was slick, he could fab a little bracket that would be easy to zip tie to. Fairly well protected.

For schools I agree but for racing I have always put mine as far forward as possible just in case it is a close finish there could be 6 feet from being a winner or not. Agree this is rare but it it could happen.

In those situations, the winner should be decided by eye and not by transponder trip.

NASA also discounts them.
Dont mount it anywhere where a slight hit would damage or knock it off (ie. bumper mesh, grill, etc).

That's what I was told as well. How far forward is not all that critical.
Photo phinish? Gauge by eye? :D
