The rear axles on my 82 are worn out, I would like to install a LSD in the future. Are the rear axles any different? 320i to a 320iS? If I just replace the axle's now, can I replace only the differential later? Are Quaife's or a rebuilt from someone like Korman's the only choices?

The axles on a 320i and 320is are identical. Replacing the diff later should be no problem at all. it took me about an hour and a half with a few beer breaks.

Adding an lsd is definitely a HUGE improvement in cornering.

They pop up on ebay quite regularly.

i scored mine for $150 in great shape, but they usually go higher than that.

Or skip the bidding war and outrageous shipping and get one from www.bmrparts.com.

Got mine for $225 shipped with 1 year warantee

Is the LSD in the 320 the same as the 323? I haven't got around to figuring out what the gear ratio is on the baur, but my lsd stopped being a lsd after the 2nd auto-x this season....

I have a 4 speed 320 (which passed IM today woot so I can drive it in the winter) with a lsd....I thought about swapping it in the baur and tossing in the extra 4 speed open diff in the rust bucket...

I think i'd rather just buy another used one and maybe learn how to rebuild the shot lsd in the baur....

Rebuilding it is a piece of cake. It just sounds scarier than it is.

A 70 ton TEREX haul truck. They are used for minning and rock quarries.

No kidding, 70 ton? I worked in a quarry for 3 years and never heard of a 70 ton, we had 75, 100, and 125 tons haulers. I thought it was common for excavater buckets to be 25 ton capacity, so thats why they made the trucks that way.

I will go get the service manual and check. I realll never payed much attention, This truck is 30 years old so I do not know.

Here are some of the 300 ton trucks I worked with out in Cripple Creek, Co.
And the shovel in the pics has a 60 ton bucket so that fits with what you were saying CJ, 5 scoops should be an even load, unless you get a really heavy rock in one.

Jesus those 300 tons haulers are massive. I've never been around one that large.

The lsd of the 320is will fit in the 323i. But the 323i has a 3.6 lsd and the 320 IS lsd is something like 3.91.

I would think that 3.91 would be some what of an improvment

Yea it would help off the line...My Baur is not a distance cruiser.....my hips are killing me after cruising tonight about 35 miles to dinner and then home...it was worth it though cruised out with the euro club and did a line up with the new M5, an E-90 330xi and me in the E-21 it was pretty cool 3 silver bimmers all in a row...to bad one of my city lights is out, we did some angel eye shots and the city lights look almost like the angel eyes but not as crisp or bright...but anyway, I have no idea how to rebuild a diff and I probably lack some of the tools to take it all apart...The Baur needs a working lsd bad for auto-x.....

The 4 spd rear end is usually a 3.64 like most of the 323s I think, FYI.

Cripple Creek is just down the road from me! I have seen those trucks at the mine - crazy huge.

I've seen the 100 ton and 80 ton trucks at Red dog mine, the worlds largest zinc mine. the part that amazes me is they got those trucks moved up there to the mine which is 150 miles or so above the arctic circle and 70 miles from the ocean port they built to haul the zinc out.....getting a few 100 ton trucks up there by ship had to be fun.....

That was a scary plan ride on a 4 seat plane and even scarier on a 737, the wingspan barely cleared the pass and it landed uphill....
