View Full Version : Is it worth it? 83 320i $500 but...
bmsamson 09-28-2006, 12:19 AM Hard to say it isn't, but maybe just shouldn't be bought at all. 83 320i, 300k (mi, not km), needs a clutch, cosmetically only fair, wants $500. I figure it'll cost me a couple of hundred and a weekend to swap the clutch, but i've seen nicer, lower mileage, 320's on here and elsewhere for less than a thousand, so maybe i should just wait till one pops up in my area? thoughts? and anyone who says what the heck, for that money go for it, if you can post a link to a thread or outside site with really good procedure/photos for the clutch replacement on this car, that's be great. i've done a pinto and a spitfire, but not one of these, and none very recently....
thanks in advance
Kevin E21 09-28-2006, 12:23 AM My opinion may not be very good, but in relation to what I got for mine, I think 500 is too much.
I paid $900 for my 78, and it only has 102k on it, mint interior, minor rust, and not really needing anything major.
I think you could probably get a better deal. Someone else can probably chime in as I am still new to the e21 game.
bossmankx 09-28-2006, 12:51 AM I'd hold out for a better deal, they're around the baltimore/DC area, just keep your eyes peeled. And beware of rust, especially up near the northeast.
sonomaGTLN2 09-28-2006, 07:46 AM 300k seems high on any motor, but if it runs fine then you might be alright. but $500 for that many miles seems much. I got mine for $450, some small rust holes in the driver and passenger floorboard with only 96k on the odometer (who knows if that's right or not), but I am working to get it running better. See how much the clutch will cost then subtract that from the $500 then offer that and say the car needs work. Thats pretty much how i did mine...the guy wanted around $600 and i said the car needed a bit of work to become "daily driveable" so i offered $400 and we settled on $450.
Good luck. Link some pics if you can.

holdfastgreg 09-28-2006, 08:25 AM I paid $500 for my '82 320IS. Interior is crap, fair but not lovely exterior and very minor rust(surface oxidation on the quarter panel from a dent.) The motor was built maybe 10,xxx miles ago, including a PnP, bored to 2.199, 10.5:1 pistons and a stahl header including ansa exhaust. I also received 8.5:1 JE pistons +1 over. However, the car isnt driveable. The slave cylinder hydro locked and its been sitting for about 2 years now.
cheechthechi 09-29-2006, 01:10 AM Save a little more and get one in better condition, especially if your budget is low. I spent 1k on my 2002 only to invest alot more to get it going and I finally decided to stop driving it as a daily because things kept falling apart. My e21 cost 2k but it was babied and in really good condition. E21's can be had for good deals and you will probably come across a far better one.
