What are the steps to replace the transmission seal?

Where the drive shaft meets the trans, I believe it is called the output seal.

Remove the driveshaft. There is probably a drive nut on the inside of where the Guibo attaches. You'll need an impact gun to spin it off. Not sure if its left hand thread or not. Should be able to beat out the output shaft. Replace the seal. Be careful not to use a dental pick or anything that will gouge the the sealing surface on the transmission case. You should think about using some Fipig (at Toytoa Dealerships) there are two kinds. Ones for engines (water and oil) ones for transmissions (automatic or manual). Get the tranny one put a smooth bead around the outside of the seal. Press it in gently tapping with a plastic or rubber hammer. Gently slide the output shaft back in and put the drive nut back in with the impact.

This is purely speculation though. I can't be for sure that's it.

The output shaft seal is the hardest to replace on the tranny. Follow the Haynes manual to get the driveshaft separated, or if you dont have one lower the center bearing, disconnect the guibo from the output shaft flange of the tranny (figure out which bolts you need off; you will need an open end and a box, and there is a techniqe here that I can help you with if you still want to do this). Once the drive shaft w/guibo attached is off, push over to the side. Tranny seals are best replaced with the tranny out, but if you were leaving it in...

The output flange needs to come off. There is a special thin walled deep socket that you have to have. You wont get it off otherwise. Buy it from Bavarian Autosport for ~$30. I bit the bullet and bought one, but in the past I have taken my tranny to an independant shop and given the guy a few bucks to take it off. Once the output flange/devil nut is off (not only do you have to have the special socket but at sometime in the past a paranoid shit head has probably locktighted it with something other than factory stuff) I lever it out CAREFULLY with a big ass screwdriver- and I drove the new one in with a piece of pipe the same size that I bought at ACE Hardware. Lubricate the areas indicated by Haynes or Chiltons; I think you pack grease in a groove someplace before you drive it in but its been a while.

Here's a pic of the area with the flange and the devil nut on:

Note that you have a Getrag 245 and the ass-end will look different, but the parts are there. Yours may have a 4 lobe output flange, and the output shaft seal MIGHT be in an assembly that you can remove from the back of the trannyl; if thats the case then you can just drive out the old seal with the pipe or what ever that you use to drive in the new seal.
