I searched around, but couldn't find an answer to my question, so here goes.

Today I tested out a BMW 6 disc changer from a 98 M Roadster in my factory wired 540i. The head unit recognized the changer, along with loaded discs, but we couldn't not get any audio from it.

Is there a specific model that is needed (i.e. the E36 changers do not work) ? I hooked up both cables btw.

I am looking to add a changer and would love to add the MP3 capable Alpine one, but I want to make sure I don't have some other underlying issue before hand.

Thanks!

Check here for used one. If you look at the break down for the part they sould tell you compatibility. Also a great plase for used parts. My buddy lost his trans in his 540. They wanted 5g for a new he bought one with a warrenty dilivered for 2. I tired to look for you but dont have the info about your roadster

I put a bmw cd changer in my 530 that came from a M roadster, when I hooked it up for the first time it recognized the changer but didnt recognize any of the CDs, so I turned off the car and then cut it back on and all was good.

I put an e36 CD changer in my e39 530 with no problems. There are two cables to attach. The "Business Radio" recognized the CD changer as soon as I powered the car, controls work, and the audio plays properly.

Let me know if you can't that changer to work.
I just installed the dice ipod integration kit so I don't need my 6 disc changer anymore fo my 540, if you want to buy mine I'll sell it to you
