View Full Version : What kind of Oil are the MAR's Running?
mr rolleyes 09-15-2006, 02:06 PM My brakes will finally be in next week, so its going back to the shop for inspection and so forth. :redspot
The previous owner was running a 15-40 and i want to change it to synthetic.
What weight does everyone run in their cars for the colder months?
Thanks guys.

ps 328ischef (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?u=33498), do you still have the reset tool?
i run Castrol full syntec 10w30
essejM3 09-15-2006, 03:26 PM Your car should have come from the factory w/synthetic?
You don't need the tool. I used to do it this way before my dash looked like a x-mas tree, I no longer care.

mr rolleyes 09-15-2006, 03:27 PM 98 m3? would you reccomend the castrol?
i did search, but everyone that answers is in cali, and i need something for the winter.
essejM3 09-15-2006, 03:29 PM Mobil 1 is what I usually use, have Castrol in there now however.
Edit: 5w30
mr rolleyes 09-15-2006, 03:41 PM thanks, i was thinking a 5w30 or something for the winter. do you run that all year round?
sKunkman 09-15-2006, 03:53 PM I use mobil1 5w30 all year round. I suppose I could run 5w40 in the winter, but it hasn't been necessary as last winter was fairly mild.
SpeedTheory 09-15-2006, 03:55 PM 10w30 Mobil Synthetic. I live in Florida 8 months out of the year, and my car isn't taken back to the MAR for winter, so it never sees cold temperatures. I've though of running 5w30, however.
AndrewBall 09-15-2006, 04:08 PM the lubricating type
joenationwide 09-15-2006, 04:13 PM mobil 1 or castrol synthetic are what most run.
5w30 in the winter.
personally, im going to run 5w50 or 15w50 in the summer, because i get lifter tick every time i autox. if that doesn't work im just going to replace oil with molasses.
essejM3 09-15-2006, 04:21 PM thanks, i was thinking a 5w30 or something for the winter. do you run that all year round?
I used to when it was a street car, now I run 15w50 since all it sees is the track.
Phat Ham 09-15-2006, 04:28 PM BMW 5w-30
Jontran8 09-15-2006, 04:34 PM 5W-30 from the dealer
Meow 3 09-15-2006, 05:31 PM stupid 9 bucks a bottle bmw only 10w-60 or whatev.....castrol i think.
Isn't it true that if you use anything else in an e46 m3 and your engine blows, that your warranty doesn't cover it?
Biggins 09-15-2006, 07:48 PM AMSoil 5w30 year round
ComBIRDable 09-15-2006, 08:54 PM I run the BMW 5W-30 oil. I found it cost me the same as Mobil 1, so I just started to buy it from the dealer. As long as I have at least 1/2 quart overfill, I don't get much lifter tick at the autox.

SpeedTheory 09-15-2006, 08:56 PM AMSoil 5w30 year round
Any lifter tick?
Biggins 09-15-2006, 09:19 PM Any lifter tick?
Nothing I can notice

ChosenGSR 09-16-2006, 12:35 PM Mobile 1 synthetic 5-40, one of the few BMW approved Mobile 1 synthetics out there.
4WDrift 09-17-2006, 01:46 AM amsoil 5w- 40
I now have AMS S2000 0W-30 which is a little thin for summer and have had AMS std 20W-50 also, so I mixed it half and half, seems to have the cold flow and hot viscosity benefits of both just as I expected. I'll try AMS 5W-40 next. Also the Castrol Synt 5W-40 whenever you can get it, so far only at Autozones. :shifty

bimmer_boyis 09-18-2006, 06:50 AM 5w-30 BMW Long Life approved Motul

you put walmart oil in a bmw... what is wrong with you
wludavid 09-18-2006, 10:54 AM Rotella is not a Walmart brand. It's a Shell brand. Walmart also sells Mobil 1. Are you going to avoid that too?
I'm using Mobil 1 0W-40 in my M52. It's a BMW-approved Long Life oil.
JamesM3M5 09-18-2006, 11:20 AM We have switched to MOTUL. We use 5w40 for summer and 5w30 for winter. Plus it meets BMW spec for long life. Just our 2 cents.
Plus we stock it.
Perculator00 09-18-2006, 12:14 PM you put walmart oil in a bmw... what is wrong with you
Walmart is just the retailer man.....they also sell castrol, mobile, & many other brands.
Shell is great oil. If you buy Mobile1.....your pretty much just paying a heck of a lot more for just "mobile1"
mr rolleyes 09-18-2006, 12:20 PM We have switched to MOTUL. We use 5w40 for summer and 5w30 for winter. Plus it meets BMW spec for long life. Just our 2 cents.

how much is it for the 5w30.
Phat Ham 09-18-2006, 12:22 PM how much is it for the 5w30. $7.75 on their website: http://www.roadracetech.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25_26_30_135_995_996&products_id=584&zenid=a1e98a4bcbe0fc00b7850ed9c1c5c7e8
bimmer_boyis 09-18-2006, 12:38 PM I pay $55 for 7 liters and mahle filter per oil change. Let it roll 10k and change the filter at 5k for good measure.
How much do you guys charge for the cans of "the chronic" from Motul. Have a couple buddies running it in their turbo cars and are looking for the best price.
Also shell is not mobile 1. Exxon and mobile are the same.

XixangE34 09-18-2006, 01:16 PM The CHRONO is $25.90 for a half gal. (2 liters). I dont stock it but can get any of there products quickly.

Hey Wayne! THANKS:D

Well, in defense of BSaint, WalMart does sell a lot of "national" brands for cheap because those brands do a special lower-quality, WalMart-only product. I don't think that's the case for Shell Rotella or Mobil1.
JUNGLISTluder 09-18-2006, 02:17 PM I can tell nobody has ready their manual............ :rolleyes
I use Mobil 1 15w50. I would never use less than a 10w40 in my BMWs......
John V 09-18-2006, 02:47 PM you put walmart oil in a bmw... what is wrong with you
So many ignorant statements by you in one thread. LOL.
sunir 09-18-2006, 02:50 PM 20/50 synthetic oil...Redline, Castrol Syntec, Silkolene etc...high temps usage
So many ignorant statements by you in one thread. LOL.
You wouldn't say this if you were in the Ready Fuel DVD (available in stores soon).:rolleyes
