hello:

I'm having problem removing my rear strut. I cannot get the strut separated from the Hub/upright part of the rear axle. its a 95 540i

I've done this before on another e34 it came part pretty easily. but it seem this one is stuck to the upright/controll arm. I even used a hammer and made blows to the strut but no movement. will not separate.

Go buy some type of Puller? Pry bar? Suspension experts please advice.

You have the bolt pulled out and the bottom shock bushing (mounted in rubber) is stuck in the hub assembly, right? If you try to just pull it, the rubber mount just deforms like crazy, right? You need to wiggle the bushing back and forth to get it broke free. Tap on the side of the bushing (not the shock housing) to get it to move back and forth - you might need a drift or just use a rachet extension. I'll mention there is a strange washer on the end of that bushing that you need to get off with just a little prying (serrated on the ID). Also, if you can find a stout round bar that fits in the ID of the bushing, you can use that to wiggle it back and forth. Once you get some movement on the bushing, it should pull out pretty easy just prying on the shock base. Use some anti-seeze on the the bushing of your new shock.

Yes.. exactly as you described.. I will try to wiggle the bushing..

It makes a lot of sense.. The rubber wound take all the impact.

I was going to buy some gear puller.

after I get thru this obsticle.. I have to tackle the front end.. :confused

As long as you don't need to save the shock....

I had the same problem and I ended up pounding the living crap out of the shock until the shock came off the inner metal sleeve. Then I was able to spin the inner sleeve by grabbing it with a pipe wrench. Once I got it to spin around a couple of times, it loosened up enough to pull out.
