Hello,

Im new at this forum, I was hoping someone could help me.

Im really worried about my 1990 525i E34 BMW, yesterday on my way home from work i noticed the car was periodically jerking while maintaining speed on the highway at 4th and 5th gear. I checked all the fluids and everything was fine except i had to add some motor oil. The problem continued this morning, but not quite as bad as the other day. This morning it would jerk in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear the most while accelerating from a stop.

I searched the forums, found a post with a very similar problem to mine but it was unanswered.

When I get home today i'll dig a little deeper and check the spark plugs and anything else I can think of. (The car burns oil and smokes when you first start it.)

Does anyone have any advice? I would appreciate anything!

Thanks.

Sounds like a very similar problem to the one I am having. I have a 1986 535i that I am restoring. It is an automatic. Started and ran fine until I had the head gasket replaced. Ever since then, it has had a jerking problem in the accelerator. Sometimes, when I decelerate, it will jump (accelerate) 2 or 3 times before calming down to where it should be. Other times, when I lightly touch the accelerator, it will jump quickly, then drop back down. this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes it accelerates and decelerates smooth as silk. Always idles perfectly.

On the advice of "expert" mechanics, I have so far: replaced the Idle Control Valve, replaced hoses, replaced distributor cap, rotor, ignition wires, spark plugs. Last week, I replaced the ECU/DME. NOTHING has fixed the problem!!!!

As I understand, there is some sort of electronic switch that controls the ICV. I am going to try that next. This is driving me crazy.

Good luck. i am going to watch this thread in the hopes that soem real expert can help us.

This sounds like a fuel filter problem. DIY..Its located underneath the car towards the trunk. All you need is a flat head screw driver and a new filter. Let me know if it resolves your prob. Good luck!
