View Full Version : Engine swap opinions.
Frost 09-05-2006, 01:48 AM Well i was wondering, what kinda engine would be nice to swap from a M20 to something with alot more hp and that can easily be moded? Would it be a good idea to throw in a M5 engine or something smaller?
Im currently looking for a engine from salvage yards right now, since my friends dad sayd he can get good and cheap engines from his sources, but i wanted to hear yalls opinion before jumping the boat and getting something that i would regret later on. Your opinion would be greatful. Thanks.

A good S38 is at least 10k, not including all the required swap parts.
The only cheap, easily modable, and somewhat easily swappable motor is the M30. A M60 swap requires pretty much a new lower front end.
All in all, the cheapest and most reliable solution is to simply buy another E34 with the engine you want, or get a TCD M20 turbo, which has shown 300+rwhp.
ILoveMPower 09-05-2006, 09:42 AM m20 turbo ftw! :buttrock:
Antrieb 09-05-2006, 09:55 AM I was going to do TCD turbo this winter but somone rear-ended me :(

  Wow, that is crazy. $10K. This guy thats parting out his car in houston wants $700 for a M50 with harness and ECU, so i might just get that. Looks like i gotta start filling up my piggy bank for a turbo then. Any donations? Money Orders, Checks, and PayPal is accepted!!:D

Dam that really sucks, is the damage alot? Just make your car a sleeper. People are gonna be like, "look at that wrecked up car"and want to race you then when yall do race, you can be the one laughing, after you beat them!
Gunslinger 09-05-2006, 10:57 AM m20 turbo ftw! :buttrock:
He's got emissions to pass, which includes a visual inspection.
Honestly - if it's power you're looking for, I'd suggest doing a car swap - sell yours and try to get hold of a 540i.
offthewall 09-05-2006, 11:09 AM yup not worth swapping engines on E34's nowadays unless youre some kind of crazy tech guy. just turbo it.

Good news is that the insurance company gave me more than I bought it for and let me keep it :D
Goat128 09-05-2006, 04:52 PM better question, which engines will bolt up to your tranny? Unless you plan on changing that too. Maybe an m50 would work?
awahl 09-05-2006, 09:37 PM im thinking about doing an m106 swap...if not then im just going to do a m30 swap...either way when my tranny goes im getting a manual...an m50 may bolt right up to your auto though.
Frost 09-05-2006, 10:54 PM Yeah i was thinkin about the tranny stuff too, but i think an M50 will bolt up to my manual tranny. The car would be my DD/Track car, when i get a chance to go to an Auto X or maybe 1/4 but not a fan of the whole 1/4 mile thing. Thanks on yalls imput.
