I think my window regulator is done. It made a loud crack after being opened and then the window only went up part of the way. It stopped there. Is there a way for me to get it up manually until I get it to the shop.

Come on! No one has any suggestions?

I think that you diagnosed the failure properly. Short of taking off the door panel and finding a way to manually force the window up, I don't think that you are going to find any suggestions.

Common problem. I believe all German car window regulators are made by the same supplier. I had the problem with my Mercedes ML 430 and my 745i. The dealer changed the regulator in my 745 while I waited. Took 45 minutes.

DaveClement is right. You may not even be able to budge the window after removing the panel depending on how screwed up the regulator cable is. I don't mean to discourage you but I just spent the better part of my weekend jacking with mine. It may not surprise you the price tag on these babies so I opted to rebuild mine.

I was afraid that I was looking for advise that didn't exist. Does $300 sound about right to replace the regulator? I would love to tackle the job myself, but time is not on my side. I don't have covered parking right now and it looks like rain this week.

Holy Crap!! I just got off the phone with BMW and they are telling me that it will cost almost $600. That sounds crazy. Please tell me that I can get it done cheaper than that.

You need to develop a friendship with an independent BMW trained mechanic in your particular area of the woods. I am sure there are several, but someone in your geographical location may have to help you find them. Their rates may not be as high as the 'stealer'ships'

This is not something which only BMW mechs can do....

In the meantime, try some Lexan and duct tape....
