i have a 1996 740il, i apparently lost the key to my car, and i need to move it in the garage, is there any way of putting my car in neutral? its not like my wives car where i can just stick a key in the shifter area and able to move the gears, ive looked and i couldnt figure out how to, but im sure theres a way, just dont know how. ive used to search method to see how to do it, but it pulls up nothing, any advice would be great
thanks

I'm afraid I don't know of a way either, but if worse comes to worse you can get those car dollies:

You jack the car up then let it down with the tires in the wheeled cradles then you can push it about.

Awesome idea, but if uve lost the keys whats the point of it sitting in the garage if all its going to do is sit there

The car dollies are a neat idea....but if the front wheels are straight, just get a few friends together for a couple of beers, and have them lift the rear end and push it in (before drinking the beers, that is.
Better get more than a couple (of friends and/or beers), as this car weighs a couple of tons....

Hmmm, I'm sure most of us are shaking our heads (as we read this) thinking how long have you owned this car and why do you only have ONE key...but I'm sure, due to your recent predicament, you've already slapped your ownself up-side the back of your head for being stupid! (I hope) :rolleyes
So, as I skip more chiding and negative comments...I'll jump right to my suggestion/tip. When you go to your local BMW dealership Tuesday to order at least 2 more keys (since you've lost the one you did have, just getting one will put you back in the same situation as before)... you have a choice of 4 different keys. Don't be put off thinking you have to spend upwards of $200. The expensive key is the master key w/integrated keyless entry...you can get a general key, valet/service key, or a spare key for between $35-$60 (approx...you know how the "stealer" are). Here's a link to the parts diagram/part# index...see item nbr #9/#10/#11/#15: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GK21&mospid=47522&btnr=41_0012&hg=41&fg=40
You will need to have the car's VIN with you and proof of ownership (like registration/title/driver's license/etc.).
You can see what the alternative keys look like in the pic below...these are pics of my Touring's spare keys...the only one that is different than the e38 spare keys is the the one in the middle. The e38 "spare" key has a smaller head and a different part nbr...but the 2 keys on the left and right are the same for the e38...and as you can see...don't cost that much. Now go get 2 keys so you don't ever have this problem again!!
