Okay, there was thread here a little bit ago about the rubber trim around the top of the windshield. The thread gave some detail on replacing it. I could not find it however. I NEED THIS TRIM and I NEED it replaced! Mine is gone, dried up and blew away I guess. I'm sure some of it is still there but I can see the whole top of the windshield. Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to buy this trim/seal and how to replace it?

FWIW, I spoke to a glass shop here. They said that it was part of the whole window seal and could not be replaced without removing the window. They also said that the chances were that the windshield would break. I would rather not spend $2000 to replace this simple rubber trim. The thread here seemed to contradict this info.

Please help!

They're just trying to get you to pay them more money.

You just need to find a shop that will do it for you. I recommend calling and independent BMW mechanic and asking him if he knows of any windshield shops in your area that can do it. It shouldn't cost much more than $20.

And I'm thinking your $2000 estimate is a typo for $200, but it might be a good time for you to consider a new windshield. Replacing your windshield every 5 years isn't a bad idea, over time they get harder to see through because of dust in the wind.

No, $2000 was right. The windshield was quoted as $1750. Then the charges for installing. This is IF the whinshield broke which they claim it will if removed. Any Ideas on a good Indy shop in the West Chicago burbs?

:rofl

Man, am I in the wrong business. I need to become a mechanic and charge people $2000 dollars for things that cost $24. That's like making $2000/hour.

The trim at the top of the windshield is a separate piece which can be purchased and replaced separately without pulling or breaking the window.

When I purchased my car, the trim was cracked and unsightly. The Ferrari dealership where I purchased the car secured the trim from BMW and replaced it in one afternoon. Several months later, I noticed that it was pulling up and away from the window so I rolled it back in but it did not hold. I took it to a local glass shop and they applied some silicone adhesive to the inside of the trim, pushed it back in, taped it for 24 hours, and now it is as good as new. They did not even write up a service ticket...so I greased the tech's palm with some folding green.

Don't replace the windscreen unless you absolutely have to, as in cracked or so sandblasted that you can't see through it heading west at 7:00 PM.
