View Full Version : Your windshield. Do you buy Sekurit or PPG?
01sport 09-02-2006, 11:13 AM 01 E38. I can't wait to get my new windshield. It will be almost like driving a new car. The domestic PPG windshield (rainsensor and heat) is about $180.00 less than the german Sekurit replacement. Any thoughts? Does the PPG have a BMW logo in the corner? Which would you choose?
xaxis360 09-02-2006, 12:14 PM I'm sure you will be happy with the PPG. All windshields have to meet DOT specifications and I'm sure a company like PPG is no exception to quality. I personally would spring for the Sekurit, but it would be for my own edification only.

Rainsensor and heat?
What does it do? I live in a place where it never rains, but the windshield will easily reach temperatures above 150 degrees.
When I go to buy a new windshield, what do I look for?

Good question. Believe it or not the glass shop told me I had a possible 4 different options on a 2001 740ia:
1 heat only (defroster)
2 heat and rain sensor (windshield senses raindrops and turns on wipers)
3 heat, rain and theft (I guess it's attached to the alarm)
4 heat, rain, theft and UV protection (sounds nice)
I called the dealer gave them the VIN and asked them what my car came with.
heat and rain
greene08 09-02-2006, 05:40 PM I need a new windshield on my 2001 740i and they said heat, UV, rain sensor form mine and they were going to charge me $860! This is at safelite auto glass with a random aftermarket shield too.
What quotes or costs have you guys paid for windshields with heat/rain/uv before or any combo of the listed?

heat/rain $380.00 PPG, $560.00 Sekurit installed
I think it's a pretty competitive business in Los Angeles
greene08 09-02-2006, 06:53 PM Holy hell, I need that up here. There has to be a cheaper place.
01sport 09-02-2006, 07:01 PM Maybe UV is really expensive. I have a garage at home and covered parking at work. I think I'll price the UV before I decide.
UV sounds important, but I'd rather go with a basic windshield, and then get it lightly tinted.
I have no need for rain sensors or defrosters.
greene08 09-03-2006, 01:01 PM I believe the 1998 did not have rain sensors as options, or did it? It became standard on 1999 models if I am not mistaken. Maybe it was an option in 1998. Either way if your car has the function you need to buy a windshield to support it.

Are you saying that if my car has that functionality, then I have to buy that kind of windshield? I can't downgrade and save some money on the windshield that I buy because I'll never use the rain-sensor option?
(I have used my windshield wipers a total of 3 times this year.)
01sport 09-03-2006, 05:05 PM Might be a good idea in case you ever sell the car. Perhaps to someone from
Oregon.

What's funny is my wife and I are thinking about moving to Oregon. She's from there and she hates it in Arizona (I don't blame her).
It doesn't matter anyway, Brother greene08 was right -- I don't the rain-sensor on my car.
