I'm embroiled in a problem with my 745's engine exibiting a knocking noise.
There is one topic of concern i've so far not raised with BMW,that is my fuel consumption being poor.
My E38 750iL seemed to show 13.9 mpg on my computer for city driving and I expected the 745i to be slightly better with it's more modern valvetronic V8.
However I am getting a figure of 11.9! Anyone got any thoughts?
Thanks in advance:stickoutt

I get no less than 18 mpg in the city and at least 24 on the highway with my 2002 745i
Still waiting for a vid or Audio file of this knocking sound?

Sorry, don't have any way of recording the sound:shifty
I just re-set my mpg computer and driving reasonably quickly around town I got a more respectable 14.4 figure
Anyone else?

Wow I drive pretty quick in town and I am getting 18 mpg min in town? I traded in a 05 GXP Bonneville with the 4.6 Northstar cause it was getting crappy 15mpg in the city...
I just wanted to hear this ticking sound you were having to see if it compared to the sound I sometimes hear when the car is cold. Hope your dealer finally decides to fix your problem when they hear it.

My '03 745Li will average between 21.5 to 22.0 over a tank of fuel. This is approximately 70% hwy and 30% city. I leave for my office very early AM so I dont encounter traffic on the way in, but do have some stop and go pn the way home in the evening. My experience is that these cars are quite sensitive to your right foot.;)

Scott remember to recompute any US consumption figures quoted as the US gallon is different to the UK gallon.

'02 745i 18.0 city, 28.2 hwy typically @ 75Mph w/air on and 1 or 2 passengers. Limit dead stop blast-offs to a few per week to get 18 Mpg. Worst milage recorded 17.0 but was driving pretty aggressively for several weeks during the calculation.
