Which car was it (the 95 or the 97)?

I had problems with an OBDI e36 a few years back. Ended up changing the O2 sensor, running some techron additive through the tank with supreme gas and it eventually passed. The other obvious thing is to make sure it's hot when they test it if they are using the sniffer.

mine failed for HC's a couple years ago

change the O2, change oil, plugs
then added techron and ran it really hard to heat up the cats right before the test

passed with flying colors
