Looking at possible replacements for the M3. What do you guys think?

E39 M5 is cool, but I've had a 540 before, plus teh wife can't drive a standard tranny....I know, I know, but she refuses to learn.

E53 4.6is sounds fun, but is it really worth the extra loot for 60 HP? I know it gets some nice looking 20 inch wheels and a body kit too.

911 what can you say, wife said if I wait till next spring she'll get oneanyway, so this is probably low on teh list right now.

Any other cars I should consider for around $40K that are fun and a little different. remember I'm over 6 foot, so don't say Elise.....I have to drive it to work everyday.

They do last hommie. Got two buddys that have worked for Suby for over 6 years. Those cars take a beating and keep speeding. Trust me, i know.

Ill have to get back to you about the S4. I know its running 25lbs boost and putting down very high 400s at the wheels. The motor has been compleatly torn apart and rebuilt with much stronger compression. Also upgraded to aluminum parts. This is on top of about every Stage 3 upgrade you can do with this car. Its very famous on Audiworld.com. The guy went threw hell and back trying to get it done. Its been over a year in the making if im not mistaken. Tunning it has been the problem. He is still tryin to get it right. Guys name is Scott, had him over the other day for a couple drinks and checked it out.

I say get a low mileage 993 for the price. They always did it more for me than the 996. 997's are the sechs, but a bit more blinging than $40k I think.

What about wait and see what the E92 M3 brings? Or you done with M3s?

M5s are pimp, but I wouldn't want to own one outside of any type of warranty. They seem to have a regular appetite for expensive parts.

If the E92 has a v8 then maybe. by then I could have alot more money saved up, I am just not impressed with teh BMW 6 cyl after having a v8 and a v12 in the past. I know they are nimble and fun to drive on teh track, but 99% of my driving is highway cruising, so "taking the twisties" is not really a consideration. maybe I'll pick up a cheap E39 540 and put a supercharger on it and some M5 sway bars.....

I would say a 993 would be pimp but the 996s are just so cheap now. The m5 when you're in it is just a badass car. Its fast, comfy, doesn't rattle like an e36, interior is just badass and has 4 drs to boot. The maint is something to watch out for though, but I don't know how much better a 911 will be on maint either.

Ok guys, here is the major decision factor.
My wife refuses to learn to drive a standard. She will need to be able to drive the vehicle due to the fact that we will be selling 2 cars to get 1 so that leaves us with the Jeep and whatever we buy. So it has to be an automatic, smg, tiptronic or whatever else you wanna call it.
Believe me, I've tried to get her to learn, but she has a hard time walking and chewing gum. Throw a clutch at her and she is as good as lost.

probably not more than an E36 M3. Especially if I get one that is current on it's maint. unlike the M3. When I got it, the PO had neglected the bushings and other suspension components.

Jeff,
If you are looking for a P-car, here are a couple sites:
pelicanparts.com Deals with older air cooled stuff
Rennlist.com Deals with newer watercooled stuff.
I am a PCA member and know my way around the cars fairly well. When I come to meet you next weekend I could bring some auction reports so you see what the late model stuff is going through for.
The early 996 cars had a problem with rear main seal leaks, but other than that they are fairly reliable. Parts are not cheap, but ther are not bad to DIY.
LMK if you want to talk about them- I could talk your ear off.. When I'm not robbing liquor stores ;)

BTW - after having quite a bit of stick time behind a '98 E39 540i 6 speed(the "strong" ones supposedly), and after riding in Sean's M5 - the M5 has got some major balls over a 540i(which feels like a torqued up E36 M3 to me).

Plus the suede headliner and leather dash are about as baller as it gets... MMMmmmmm... suede headliner...
