dangit!

white smoke in "enough" quantity and a significant and marked coolant losss...

$108 for the gaskets from BMA...

craopla...

and I already have the E28 torn apart in the garage...

ugh...

Theodore

I'm assuming this is on the 318... Any coolant in the oil/vise-versa? If its on the M42, do the profile gasket if it hasn't been done yet.

Dark Helmet
08-30-2006, 12:03 AM
no coolant in the oil... and as yet no oil in the coolant...

the profile gasket was done, but it comes in the BMA gasket set, so it will get replaced again.

I need to see if I can get the head bolts cheap though... that's the next catch.

Mr Project
08-30-2006, 12:47 AM
Might be worth a compression check first before spending money....

Also the head bolts might be like the M30, which are actually not torque-to-yeild...I misspoke earlier. The M30 bolts are reusable. (I just didn't reuse them)

Sadly I am totally shot for time this weekend and next, but after that I should have some availability in between Corvair sessions. If it's bad, it might be worth a little stop-leak for a couple weeks if you think your heater core can take it.

Mr Project
08-30-2006, 08:12 AM
Another thought...I keep forgetting Monday is Labor Day. We could bring the 318i over to my place, pull it in and strip it down to get the head off. Then you'd have a few days to get the head checked out/decked, and get the parts from BMA. As long as Aaron isn't done with the Corvair (which I bet he's not), I don't mind giving up my parking spot for a week or so. The only problem will be that I won't be much/any help on the 9th/10th weekend, so you'd be partially on your own for re-assembly.

powellsd
08-30-2006, 08:36 AM
het Jer that sucks. let me know what parts you need and i can see if i can get it cheaper for you.

Mr Project
08-30-2006, 09:25 AM
Oh, and don't order a HG set until you're sure you don't need a thicker unit to compensate for milling beyond whatever the threshold is...(.08ish?)

Mojo325is

teh suck.

Dark Helmet
08-30-2006, 12:19 PM
oi crap....

Armen, Matt Harral is going to come over friday evening to help me get the head off. I'll get it out to CarQuest Saturday AM, I need to see what their turn-around time is.

that leaves me monday to put it all back together, if I can get the head back.

I'm going to put wheels on the E28 and roll it into the street so I have work space, so the garage is not so much an issue.

Mr Project
08-30-2006, 01:03 PM
You'll never get close to that turnaround, unless things have really changed over there. You're just going to frustrate yourself if you think you can do this whole job in a long weekend. They'll need the head for several (working) days if they don't have any warning, and they wouldn't put me in line until I had the head sitting there on the bench.

Dark Helmet
08-30-2006, 02:40 PM
ugh... I was thinking CQ turned yours around in a day... guess I was wrong.

I still think matt and I can get it out in a long night (I can take off from work around 2 or 3)... putting it back together, I'll give you that.

Mr Project
08-30-2006, 05:44 PM
Getting it apart should be no biggie, and yeah, do it whenever you can, so you can get this thing rolling. I'm just saying don't expect to be able to re-assemble on Monday without direct divine intervention.

The actual labor shouldn't take very long, I'm just saying you'll have to be realistic about turnaround time at the shop and misc. parts that you forget to order.

Dark Helmet
08-30-2006, 06:13 PM
ah... makes better sense now... I'm thinking "this thing isn't any worse than the M30 complexity wise, and yeah, I suck at being patient, but come on man... I'm not tearing down the head or anything!!!!"

I'm going to try to get the E28 out of the garage tonight and get the basic disassembly started on the E36... there sure is a lot of space in that engine compartment!!!! :D:D:D

and I will need head bolts and they are e-torx12...

I think I can actually get by without a car until next thursday...

AlarmedBread
08-30-2006, 07:16 PM

Dark Helmet
08-31-2006, 11:06 AM
where did you take your head?

Dark Helmet
08-31-2006, 11:16 AM
Also:

Got the E28 out of the garage, the E36 IN the garage, and the E28 BACK in the driveway behind the E36... the E28 is really easy to roll when it's half gutted!

I've got to start ordering parts and tearing it down tonight.... ungh... and Armen is "zero help" until at least monday.

AlarmedBread
08-31-2006, 05:30 PM
sports car garage, they're literally 2 blocks away and good friends (it seems everyone likes you more when you bribe them with donuts)

it is highly doubtful that i'll have the car in safe enough condition to make BHR

Dark Helmet
08-31-2006, 07:13 PM
donuts are indeed key to this process... you sure you wouldn't rather have an M30 in that car?? :D:D:D:D:D:D

neither will I man... that's why I'm driving my buddy's M3! :D:D:D

if you want to ride along and maybe snag a drive or two, we may be able to arrange that.

AlarmedBread
08-31-2006, 08:26 PM
that would be awesome!

main reason for the trip would be the drive, so it'd be nice to be in my own car, we'll see how it goes... i've driven the roads before, but in a dodge diesel truck :rolleyes

"what do you mean slow down? i'll burn up the brakes!" :D

also the m30 could be a possibility depending on what lurks in the crankshaft area of my engine....the head might not be any good either, donuts = free inspection and pressure check, at thier leisure....

Dark Helmet
08-31-2006, 09:32 PM
ah... donuts ftw.

the engine can be out in a matter of an hour or so... transmission, ecu, harness, even a driveshaft and diff... its all there for the taking and would make one MEAN E30.... especially if it was sucking down 10-12psi.... :devillook

AlarmedBread
08-31-2006, 09:37 PM
stop tempting me!

I could not afford such ventures...planning a trip to england soon...

part of me is hoping my engine is scrap, great excuse for a swap :devillook

family owns a bakery btw, how many donuts would the m30 cost :D

Dark Helmet
09-01-2006, 09:47 AM
donuts won't cut it for that.

I'd let the engine go, with all the wiring, PS pump, Alt, for like $350... transmission/flywheel would run another $125 or so, and the diff would be about $100. you can have the driveshaft.

Dark Helmet
09-01-2006, 04:13 PM
exhaust bolts > me...

you'd also think that, with all that room in the engine compartment, you'd allow a liiiiiiiiiiiiiitle bit of room to access the back of yhe motor....

yeeesh!

that is a good price for all that stuff. I have sold just the m50 engine for 600 and auto trannys for 400.

Dark Helmet

the later M30s (B34) bring about double the money of the earier ones...

not sure if i'll even need the parts or not...we will see once i tear down the bottom end tomorrow, if everythings acceptable or not...

don't go holding parts for me, there is no garantee that i'll be needing them

well i got my engine back together, hows yours doing?

head gasket looked fine...looks more like whoever had it off last did not clean it very well, hopeflly thats what caused the leak...tested fine with no cracks or warpage...

btw - i had to buy 6 exaust studs don't forget your antisieze :nono

well...

while i'd love to do the swap, i'd rather find a rolling chassis to use, it will be alot easier to meet specs for the classes i'll want to enter this way, so i'm going to fix my car, sell it, and then spend a ton more money on another pile of junk...then since it will be nice, it will get keyed and broken into in my crappy neighborhood.....ah i can see it all now :cool

it's a simple metal sleeve.

jer,
it's a centering pin. it aids in holding the gasket in place and aligning up the head to the block. you will need to tap or press it in.

the transmission uses the same thing and I've heard that you can have transmission problems if you have worn ones....

S

Dark Helmet
09-29-2006, 12:31 AM

should probably be towads the pass side and cylinder 4...atleast thats how it is on most engines....look at the bottom of the head for clues (look at where the one thats in the block will go, find a hole that looks like that on the other side diagonally from it)

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v345/AlarmedBread/325is/?action=view&current=block2-1.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch13

*edit*

oh, and its definately NOT "A"

that is not a head bolt hole, these are used to stick a wooden dowel in and help locate the head on the block...it will be another bolt hole that the locating pin goes to...

Mr Project
09-29-2006, 05:46 PM
I was thinking more #9/10 in the diagram. But you should be able to just check all the bolt holes in the head/block, it should only fit in one.

I'm litteraly near tears...

so I finally find the stupid hole for the dowel that holds the flywheel in place...

it has a rubber plug in it, so I start working on the plug to get it out... it even has a nice ring on the end to put a screwdriver through and get a little leverage on it...

until, that is, the thing rips in half and leaves a nice impossible to budge plug in the block...

I am soooooooo ready to burn this car down...

even if I could push it through, i'm not sure it would fall cleanly to the "drains" at the bottom of the bellhousing...

I could litterally cry I am so frustrated with this thing...

Mr Project
10-09-2006, 10:40 PM
It's a piece of rubber. It won't do any damage if it rattles around for 10 seconds before the flywheel grinds/melts it into powder. The only way it could hurt anything is if it got inside the clutch assembly, and that is not possible.

Take a deep breath, punch it into the bell housing cavity, and move on with life.

I'm running without mine and have been for the past 5k.mi.

Mine disintegrated upon removal and I never replaced it. No ill effects so far...

Plus, with a stubby phillips and a short screw, you can leave it in and use it in place of the loop. It won't hurt anything.

Mr Project
10-10-2006, 07:38 AM
Worst-case scenario, if you run without the plug and submerge the car, some water will get into the bell housing cavity. IMO if you get to that point you have bigger problems then the water on your clutch disk.

Saw a young guy in a silver E30 325is with 2005 Black Hills decals at Markel BMW yesterday (Monday) around 4:20-30. I said Hi, but he seemed a bit shy/nervous about something. Think the parts guy was having him go get the VIN or something off of his car.

Is it anyone on here?

Either way, was nice to see someone. A time or two ago when I was there I ran into an older guy with a 635 CSI (IIRC), but he wasn't too friendly actually.

I think we should have a small Nebraska BimmerForums meet so I can actually realize who I'm talking with on here. Just a thought.

update... still stuck... the M3 flywheel doesn't have the correct spot to pin the flywheel/crank at TDC, so I'm going to have to either figure out another way to do it externally or i'm gonna have to pull the head back off...

RagnarDanskjold
10-12-2006, 01:17 AM
Are you trying to rotate to TDC or do you actually need to lock the flywheel?

FWIW, with all the head work I've done, after destroying the plastic plug I found out my Lt.wt. fly has no dowel hole, so using a dial gauge indicator, I confirmed that the timing mark on the harmonic balancer was spot on for TDC and it timed out no problem.

Dark Helmet

you should just be able to go to the local parts store and pick up thje rubber hose. that all we have in spots for the race car. As long as it is a high presure hose for fuel you should be good to go. just take a chunck of the old hose to parts store so they can match it up for the size.

And Karl, as a fellow beast who's got one inch on my 6'7" frame, I feel compelled to tell you that pressure is building internally for me to build a floor pivoting pedal box for clutch/brake that will yield about 2-3" more useable room in the footwell. That's wierd. My pedal wouldn't come back up (IIRC) and it was a dead slave, but the master was just fine. Of course, if you've got a return spring on the clutch pedal arm that will do it.

RagnarDanskjold
10-23-2006, 11:28 PM
Can you remove the slave to see if the plunger is intact and not leaking?

That's odd that you could pump clear fluid through but you get no pressure resistance in the system.

Has the slave been off the car at all? Possibly not seated in the fork?

New exhaust is ON. Sounded a little raspy at certain RPMs at first, but sounded DARN good from inside the house when you drove by later. :)

its an M42, the rasp is OE...

and it is cleaning up a bit... now I need to get the springs swapped before it rattles apart...

while fun, they are totally unnecessary..

Your crazier than I thought :D

pshh...

you dont need plates...well..actually...

get them asap, since your car is red

times pulled over in my red car = 5 a day average

times pulled over in my delphin car = 0

and we know which one was sped in (much)more frequently ;)
