The in tank fuel pump on my 320i just took a dump on me, and I didnt like how much rust I saw in the tank when I pulled it and the sending unit(which also doesnt work) out. So my new plan is to just put a fuel cell in the trunk to make my life easier and maybe help with the weight distribution a little.

What I'm seeking guidance on is wether or not you guys think the stock rated highpressure external pump will provide enough fuel pressure if gas is gravity fed to it, instead of being delivered by the in tank low pressure pump. I dont see where the initial pump is doing much other than delivering the gas out of the tank, but would like everyone's opinion on this.

Thanks,

The early E21 and some euro models did not have the intank pump.
It was a update on U.S. cars from the first production run. They had a vapor lock problom,
My 323i did not have one but I did add it to make life on my main pump easyer

So it would work, but think about were those stock tanks are!!
The weight distribution will not get much better than in front of the rear wheels down low for a fuel tank!

I bet 2 new tanks are cheeper than a fuel cell.
Or you can have them coated, but I am not real fond of that option.

My opinon only, others may vary...

Lots of CIS cars used just an exterior pressure pump to run and work fine that way. I don't think BMW would have upgraded so many cars if it wasn't an issue, but I can't understand exactly how it solves the problem on this or what the problem is, so can't say for sure.

I have had good luck with treating and coating some motorcycle tanks, you might call a radiator shop in your area. They can usually chemically clean them very well.

You can lock into cells cheap at summit and Jegs. Anywhere from 100-200 for a nice aluminum or plastic cell. I want to say Jegs was cheaper but I dont recall. Fuel cells also come with asender, so coupled with a external fuel pump you'll be safe. Just make sure when you buy a fuel cell that it comes with a sender.
