Ny im not too sure about, but here in Jersey, you need to have a front plate, and i dont have it i got a euro plate, been pulled over a few times and only one cop said "you should get that taken car of". I dont think they really care, and heres a good cover story

COP: Why dont you have a front plate?

YOU: Well, i got rear ended about a month ago, just got it fixed and the lisense plate was un-salvagable, so i decided to move the front one on the back, seeing as the back one seem to be more important

...might work..

haha thats a good one. Yea the law is so stupid here in NJ, in PA they dont care. You can have a euro plate in the front in NJ as long as your licence is placed on your dash and is visible. My friend got pulled over and fine like 60 bucks for not having front licence plate.

Use One Vehicle Plate Instead of Two

Question
Can I use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates on my NYS registered vehicle? What if there is only one location on my vehicle to attach a vehicle plate?

Answer
If the DMV issues two vehicle plates for your vehicle, you must use both vehicle plates. Put one vehicle plate on the front of the vehicle and one vehicle plate on the back of the vehicle. There are no exemptions to this requirement.

If there is only one location on your vehicle to attach a vehicle plate, contact a parts store to get a device to attach the other vehicle plate to your vehicle.

The NYS Police and other law enforcement agencies recommend that vehicles display two vehicle plates. The two vehicle plates help the police to identify vehicles. The NYS vehicle plates use a reflective material, and the two vehicle plates improve the visibility of vehicles at night

If you use one vehicle plate instead of two vehicle plates, you can receive a fine of $25 to $200 and mandatory surcharges of $50.

The DMV issues one vehicle plate for some vehicles. These vehicles include trailers, motorcycles, and the tractor unit of a tractor-trailer.

When my front plate got stolen I drove around for about a month without it and no one said a thing. I did cover my ass by getting a note from my local PD saying that a new plate was being sent. Never needed it. I have the BMW CCA plate and don't mind it on the front.

Pete folded his NY plate so only the numbers show. Looks kinda like a euro plate but small. No hassles yet that I know of.

I've never had a front plate on any of my NYS registered vehicles. The only time I was questioned about it was at a sobriety check point and all they did was tell me to put it on asap, which I did not do, and I drive through that same check point with the same cops twice a month. It all depends on your local police force and how much they care.

i had two tickets for no license plate at front. So I took the car to a parking lot, affixed the plate below the bumper with zip ties, took a picture and sent it in; first ticket dismissed.
The second time the car was parked and the Parking a-holes wrote a "no front plate displayed ticket", I sent the same old pic with a letter complaining about why the officers don't look around before writing the ticket, that the plate was below the bumper (unless you look straight ahead you don't notice it, because it is like 3 inches behind the bumper....)
Do you know if it is a law? The DMV says it is a recommendation from the NYS Police, how can they fine you for a recommendation?????

I don't know about other areas in NY but if you do that in NYC (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx,...) you are almost assured a ticket, the funny thing is, you'll get more tickets while parked than while driving. Cops don't care but the traffic cops need to write as many tickets as they can. And they will!

In Connecticut, I'd say a third or more cars run without a front plate. Police don't care. I've gone 2 years without one on my Nissan and don't even get looked at. I put one on my bimmer because it's already set up for it. Holes weren't even punctured in my Nissan's bumper.

You can't put the plate on the dash in Jersey, they will write you a ticket for no front plate because they will tell you that the view of the plate is "obstructed"... I have personal experience with this one.

i live in ny, ive had no front plate on my e30 for months now and havent been stopped once for it, i live around the city of poughkeepsie, its a very busy area, i find the farther north i go (backroads, wooded areas) thats where the law has nothing better to do, so depending on where you live, will determine the chances on you getting away with it

If you live in a small town and drive thru main street a lot (where cops hang out) you may get pulled over. If you drive near train or bus stations, if you pass by the police pct you are in danger. Any big city that enforces parking rules is also a danger area. But if you live outside of a big city and drive mainly on GSP or NJ TPKE or similar big highway I don't think it's a problem.

Been in NY/NJ for over a year now. No front license plates. And never been pulled over (for any reason, for that matter.)
I've gotten around 6 parking tickets in the same time (NY and NJ), but none mentioned the front license plates not being there.

Well I recently just removed mine. I'm expecting to be pulled over soon as I have french headlights with 5000k HIDs. They give off a green hue when cold. I always get a weird look by oncoming officers. Generally speaking it sometimes is the smaller towns where they have nothing better to do, that they will pull you.

Well i recently was pulled over for my euro plate in he city of poughkeepsie. The cop didn't ticket me but he explained to me that owning such a plate and displaying in place of a regular plate is a felony. I now am not driving through that town with the plate anymore. Just a heads up

yep! especially if you pass thru one of those weekend checkpoints. they assume your trying to pull something illegal. i've seen guys ride with the plate in the window but it's supposed to be "affixed" to the bumper. like was said, if your upstate or not a minority (LOL yeah i pulled the race card) you'll probably skate but me living in the boros and being black...i'll screw the plate in.

...if i ever get ny plates that is. i normally have NC which only requires one in the rear. and yep cops still ask, "where's the front plate?"
