Good to see you again, Rob! And nice to meet you, Jason!

Some BMW welcome we gave him... 3 guys in a rental 'Stang follow him into the parking lot and rev at him. Eesh!

The food was monumental as hoped and it appears the idea has caught on. At 9:45 on a Saturday night there was quite a line. The funny thing is, no matter what you ordered, everyone walked away with a huge (and I mean HUGE like praying mantis huge) wrapper of meat, bread and sauce.

I was up waaaay late and didn't sleep that much with all that Chili powder and water coursing through my veins

I finally got around to my tech session Mon. morning, replacing both tie rod assemblies, sway bar bushings and one end link with a torn boot. Aaaaand, back to OE '95 M3 springs. (H&R OE Sports for sale, ha ha.)

The difference is Night and Day and I haven't had an alignment yet. (I eyeballed the tie rod lengths and I got pretty damned close if I do say so my damned self.)

The yardstick I've always had was how the car felt when I first got it (with 95k already on it.) At highway speeds, even a twitch of the wheel had the front end moving into the turn without wallowing. And on hard braking, the entire car just hunkered down with almost no transition of the chasis.

For years that's been gone. Ever since the original shocks went south and I thought to 'upgrade' to the progressive rate OE Sports. Frankly, I think they are ass for these cars. They always felt soft and the response in steering transitions has always wallowed, driving me crazy.

I don't have the rear springs and bushings in yet. Very soon when I do the diff fluid and guibo. But the difference in $200 in parts and 3 hours of my time had me maniacally grinning at every turn, gibbering through psychotic laughter 'THIS is my car. This is how it's supposed to be.'

Cliff notes: Nimble little minx, isn't she.

I regret I missed out on all the fun :(

as I've prolly explained to most of you already, it's was the week from hell and there simply was not enough of me to go around that weekend.

I really regret getting a chance to visit with Rob.. :( I sure hope you'll be coming back to KC again sometime soon.

I also wished I had gotten a chance to lend a hand with Steve's tech session.. I would really liked to seen how the struts/springs were dealt with.
My car is prolly gonna have to sit for awhile longer so I can recover funds and bit by bit aquire rotors/pads and now wheel bearings.. those are bad too I found out when I attempted to take her out for what I thought mighta been a harmless short trip and back..

I hear that Jun's is supposed to be one of the best.

I've liked Matsu's in Westport next to Jerusalem Cafe, but haven't tried many others here.

I did have, hands down, the best sashimi I've ever had at 'I Love Sushi' in Belleview, WA this summer when I was up there for the historics. I can't even begin to describe how sweet, fresh and suculent the cuts were. One of the few times I didn't delve into the wasabi and ginger, it was that good.

I'd be up for a roll to Lawrence sometime myself for nostalgia and good eats.

I bet it can be done.. lighted too!

I've been bad and not in the loop lately... things have gone a bit nuts over here the past month.

My Best Friend of 11 years had to be put down August 26th :( His hips were going out and he could barely hold himself up to go potty.
He basically had been telling me for a few days prior that he'd had enough.. that it was time. He was in ALOT of pain, but had been hiding it for quite some time.. he was losing the battle and it was becoming obvious that he was in too much pain for him to handle anymore.
I had to make the tough decision and had the vet come to my home to do the deal.. first time I ever had to do that.
I miss him everyday :cry
Still have my new buddy Frankie.. my Siberian Husky. He just turned 9months old recently.

On another note, I quit smoking.. coincidentally just soon after I lost my buddy Taz.. :dunno. It's been 20+ days now since I've had a smoke... not even one drag off a stogie! :alright Something I've NEVER done before since I started when I was ~16yo.

Feel much better now.. but I've had to keep myself busy:

For one, staying off the 'puter has helped.
I've cleared the fence line, done all the laundry, cleaned the house, the garage, the yard, the gutters, pruned the tree.

I've also managed to rebuild the front susp. on my car :redspot . Got the M3 struts/springs, new LCA's/LCAB's on and it feels ALOT better.
But now all the brakes need replaced and the rear driver's wheel bearing is shot :mad . Got the parts in Friday, just need to get off my ass and rip into it again.

Anyways.. I'll keep an eye out for whenever the next meet is.. Stonewall sounds fine to me.. hope they're done ripping into that intersection at 103rd and Pflumm... last I seen it, it was a mess.

so this was your post #666? :devillook

anyhow....

thanks,

Taz truly was a great friend all these years. There will never be another like him. It's funny how this new pup, Frankie, is so dramatically different than Taz was.
I knew Taz was pleading for a way out that would mean he could go with some dignity still intact (he could still stand up, but it was very difficult to do)... I had to realize that it was a canine that I was dealing with.. not a human.. we are very different on how we view our handicaps/illnesses... for humans, we rationalize that we can be treated/adapt to our health problems.
For canines, they only understand that they are doomed and feel helpless/useless... and there really is no rationalizing to them any other way of thinking... especially when they are very old for their breed... which Taz was.. 11yo at 65lbs is VERY old.

I'll hopefully have the car put back together and road worthy by then.. I forgot to mention.. I need a new battery too! :mad Seems like alot of things went to shit all at once.

The bike has a pretty bad exhaust leak around one of the flanges.. might need a new flange or have to take it out and warp the flange a bit so it'll bite down one the gasket better.. the inner sleeve wants to slip back into the flange and not bite down on the gasket/pipe flare... it sounds like ass with the air clicking out it while riding.. plus it's not good for the valves I've heard.

Get your bike up and running yet?

my 'real name' is Brian... the date if on a wed night doesn't really matter much to me. i'd prefer OK Joes, one of the locations out south as that is closest to my work... i usually get off around six. that's about all of the input i have.

i just remembered, wed night and bbq... Zarda on 87th st has 'kids eat free' night every wed. if you purchase a 'regular' dinner, you get a free kids meal. assuming i guess you have a kid with you. so keep that in mind, any of you with kids, that's a good place to get a cheap dinner that's not fast food.

The first post in this thread is where I update the upcomming events. We're looking at the 18th at Stonewall. It's out south near 95th & Pflumm. I put a google map link next to the entry.

We usually meet around 6:30, but it's usually 7ish before the last roll in and we begin the feasting.

Everyone bring two name tags: witness relocation name and BF.c name.

Dewds: One more day at Heartland Park working Tech for the SCCA Runnoffs. Saw Will Turner's M3 there today. Took third to a pair of Scoobydoo WRX's.

T1 had some nice F-460's that didn't hold their own against a monster pack of brute Vipers and a surprise C5 Vette' that took the checker.

I'm where we weigh cars, do fuel tests and post race inspections. If you win, expect some serious wrenching. More than a few cars had heads/engines pulled and cams measured, bore/stroke, suspensions. It's amazing to watch these mechanics pull an engine (didn't know the WRX's were horizontal opposed fours) and head in under and hour in front of a small crowd as if putting on another nightly show.

No pics worth posting from my cell phone but I'm having a blast not doing the work that keeps me awake with panic at night. :)

RagnarDanskjold
10-15-2006, 11:49 PM
I'm ready for it.

Today (sun) was crazy. This time I was working full on Tech. Spec Miata was under close scrutiny (I think this is the first natl. event) and the top six cars were brought in, weighted then STRIPPED bare. Pull one corner (susp) for testing, pull the head and two valves for testing, camshafts (for testing) Transmission (we stripped them down to the cartridges so that I could count the teeth physically on 3rd gear, both power and lay shafts), Inspect crank, pull pistions for weighing (wrist pins, clips separate, rod separate), inspect water pump impeller, pull block completely, pull diff, inspect for micropolishing, count teeth to confirm ratio, drop front subframe and compare to factory piece for modification/different year piece, check intake and exhaust manifolds for presence of unmolested factory welds, bends, crimps, etc...

It was insane. I started out as an observer (watching for parts being secreted out/in - none of these guys seemed the type. All really cool), receiving the parts, marking them and sending them for appropriate testing, but wound up being asked to perform many of the inspections myself since I knew what everything was and what to look for after going through one inspection.

We started around noon and I did my last diff and crank inspection at 8:00 and started the long, wet drive home. I'm so behind in work it's not even funny. It was great not only watching these guys strip the engines, but actually help them once the official inspecting was mostly completed. We're not expected to help in any way in the interest of impartiality, but everyone was hopping and swamped and the spirit of comraderie filled the place. I can't be within ten feet of tools and not feel a strong need to use them. Especially when these guys had their hands full. Plus, it was like dress rehersal for replacing my head gasket. (Still putting that off since I'm swamped and have to get new winter shoes since I burned out my Blizzaks playing with the rear camber adjustment)

I thought it was good. They had a rib and brisket special with one side for $7.50. The ribs were meaty and plentiful, not as good as Backdrafts, the brisket was excellent and I really liked the BBQ sauce. The beans left something to be desired. Overall pretty good tasting and a very good value. Maybe in the spring we can go back and sit outside under the lights and the big tree.

I was very pleased with my Plate of Meat™. Beef and Burnt Ends made mah belly very happy.

I've learned that the secret to any place that sells by the pound is to order two half-pound selections of meat. The line guys seem to invariably put a full pound of each on the plate and they happily charge me for one pound. $13 for two pounds of succulent dead animal roxors my face off ftmfw.

Brady also raised some interesting questions about using VANOS heads on M50 engines without the VANOS unit and had examples of valves and springs from each. I still recommend he install the head off the pontiac or whatever engine the third valve came from. It was as big as the appetizer plates and looked like it would have passed small children through the intake without a problem.

I vote good stuff and worth a repeat in the spring. The patio it just too cool.

And yeah, Dean. :shifty Under the lights by the big tree, just a bottle of Royal Purple, a Bentley manual and yer sweetie, right? :confused

I think you have been reading too many of your clients' romance novels.

Had more BBQ for lunch today. Secret BBQ, from a catered only place. You can't just walk in anywhere and get it. More ribs, brisket, chicken, beans, potato salad and cole slaw. Very tasty, it is called Flame Thowers.

Definitely Lawrence for our next outing.

We need to pick a place for BBQ and pick a place out south near 435 & 10 (whatever that highway to Lawrence is) for a meetup so we can head out together.

Logan? What's the skinny on the BBQ in Ltown?

assoutE12
10-30-2006, 03:49 PM
There are a few BBQ places in lawrence,

Vermont street BBQ.....downtown, good BBQ, Freestate beer on tap.
Biggs BBQ.......... more of a sit down/sports bar type of place, decent BBQ.
Buffalo Bobs smokehouse....... IMO the worst restarant in Lawrence FTL
Granddaddys BBQ......... reminds me of AB's, not fancy, paper plates, Damn good BBQ, I like the BBQ better than Vermont street.....but vermont street has FSB on tap, I'd say its a toss up between those two, its up to you guys.

DeanP
10-30-2006, 04:39 PM
If Granddaddy's is the better then let's do that.

As for a meet up place you are welcome to meet at my place, near 435 and 87th, just minutes from K10. Or some place around Oakpark Mall would also be handy.

RagnarDanskjold

Well I am still in High School but I attend a Vocational School (Herndon Career Center) for half of my day.

And the answer to your question is kinda. I have helped out/owned on Forum sites before with php and SQL databases (Done my own Add Ons for PhPBB and I own a License for VB) but I am not any good with creating my own code.

I like the design aspect of things more so I leaned towards Illustrator and Photoshop a while back more then Dreamweaver and such. I do know how to created a basic web page though.

- Pretty much...I am better at designing things.

But why do you ask?

RagnarDanskjold

Sounds very much like me. I love the design side, but being a solo flyer I've had to teach myself the other bits to be effective.

Here's my gateway for $h1ts and grins: http://www.steveklein.cc

I've worked with strict designers and strict programmers in the past, but never been fully satisfied. Basically, I'm looking for another me who knows how to design but also how to make it work. I run the gamut from web coding, flash, video editing, 3D, tiger taming, etc...

So you created all that flash...because that is pretty freakin' amazing to me. I haven't got much into flash (no free time).

I want to but usually being a self learning isn't all that motivating to me. I've learned PS, Illustrator, Frontpage, and some Dreamweaver by myself but thats it.

RagnarDanskjold
11-05-2006, 11:20 PM
Ty. Flash has been my bread and butter for a while, but I have to cover a lot of bases to offer what I do.

Every project is a learning experience and the best way to learn. If I have a goal to achieve, I can figure it out. Just sitting down with software and the manual gets me nowhere most of the time.

On another note, I went to see Randy & Brady at Arrowhead for the autocross and had a blast. I'll definitely need some R comp. rubber in the spring when I'm ready to give it a go myself. Those 710's were impressive!

I'll state publicly that I want copies of those pics, Brady. The two of you made all the cones quiver with fear each time you lined up.

Schweet.
