Hey guys. Just wondering if something weird is going on. Every day when i get up and go to school, i crank the engine and it misses until it warms up. if i attempt to drive and it's not warmed up, when i hit the gas (my car's 5-speed automatic.) it goes through first, then shifts into second too-late. instead of shifting at a little over 2 revs it waits and shifts at about 2.5 to 3 revs. A slight jerk occurs when it shifts at this higher rpm. this is odd because i always have loved how smooth this and all bimmers shift. once the engine is warm, it performs well and is as smooth as ever. FYI i use 89 octane just as my manual says. just wondering, should I ignore this initial missing or wait until it warms and stops missing before i begin to drive? Or could this problem be more serious and need professional attention? Thanks.

I'm guessing it needs a tune up and a good once over.
Does your ATF fluid smell "burnt"? Look brown or black? Itshould be red.

Missing in a BMW engine is something to be taken seriously and needs to be investigated and fixed. It may be something as simple as bad plugs or as serious as a small headgasket leak that's wetting a cylinder with coolant. Get the car to a shop and get it checked out.

i havent smelled my atf fluid but it looks more brown than red. It does have a red tint to it but more brown than red. I talked to a mechanic about this but he didnt really investigate cause at that time it would only miss after about 3 or four days of not being cranked. he said this is normal. But now about every morning it misses. it's not huge and it doesnt last but about a minute but it does make the car rythmically shake lightly and makes a low missing noise. like i said once it warms it's perfect.

is the miss you are talking about the not shifting where you think it should be shifting? All BMW's with auto trannies shift at high RPMs when they are cold, thats normal. When normal operating temp is reached the car/trans will and should perform normally. How long have you had this car for?

I've had this car since 6/5/06 and i've put about 1200 miles on it since then. It has about 98000 miles right now. thats good to know that the late shifting is normal when it's cold. i was really worried about that.
