So Im at Hampton beach in NH and theres a double lane road and im with my girlfriend. Some guy and his buddy pass me in a TALON with the typical $25 exaust. I end up behind him at a light and he tries to gun it thinking "this guys wants to race". So its not worth my time and gas. He shifts to 2nd and see the car jerk like i have never seen and smoke coming out of his exhaust I pull up next to him at the next light just by chance and he looks over laughing a bit. I just say,"Thats cool, how do i get my exhaust to blow black smoke like that?" So i kinda killed his ego. Maybe im the ass but it makes me mad when people are like that sometimes.

He was probably turbocharged, running rich, and much faster than your snail of an E36 325i.

By the description it sounds like it easily could have been an awd tsi, tuned to run on high boost, ugly or not. In which case your pretty 325 wouldn't have had a chance.

Ever seen a high horsepower car? They puff quite a bit of black smoke, especially when turbocharged inbetween gears (with a vented diverter valve), sudden loss of all intake air, getting back on the gas, not quite enough air to make up until the turbo spools, poof, black smoke.

Hell, my stock 325is is stout and running perfect, but it still puffs quite a bit of black smoke, most older cars do from lack of advancements in EFI technology.

Talon´s MAY be fast.. but hardly all of them will be supertuned just because they puff black smoke.

Hoping he was not referring to the talon model, but rather the state of this PARTICULAR talon, one would assume that the engine may have been in the same condition as the rest of the car.

I could say a variation of the same thing.
"I came up behind a Stock looking Supra pouring black smoke at shifts.. I think his engine was blown, he wasn´t doing more then 50. It was rusted out and had a cheap 2$ exhaust tip. looked like a real POS."

Because the car is a Supra and blowing black smoke, here in killstories this car is automatically converted to a 800 RWHP monster that dissintigrates all cars and quite afew bikes.

Another possibility for black smoke...different turbo mounted different not properly draining the oil back into the pan...at least thats common among snail powered bmws :shifty

Its usually grey, but ppl will mistake it for black. ;) As for white, if its white and sweet smelling then you have other issues than just running rich :rofl

My Honduh blew oil past the seals in the end of it's life, but it was white and whispy (like excessively rich when the car is just started or tire smoke). Grey smoke is a combination of this oil smoke and running rich.

my friend has a talon that he works on and tunes himself (has a plug in laptop and the whole works). it idles and runs like a piece of crap (not to mention looks like crap) for a DD, but damn when he opens up the turbo it is one of the fastest cars ive been in. it will easily drop 100bhp more than my 325 if we dynoed. i was pleasantly suprised at how hard that thing pulls
