View Full Version : My Blown E36 VS 02-03 Cobra

So...
Im on the freeway and a VERY loud black cobra pulls up and kinda hangs out with me, headlight to headlight. I had a feeling he wanted to go so without downshifting I move up just a little bit to see if he bites. The cobra accepts the challenge and lines up again.

So I Rev a bit, he revs a bit (wow) I put it in 3rd and take off. I kid you not by the time I put it in third and floored it he was a car ahead of me and when I shifted in into 4rth he was probably 4 cars. I just gave it up and shut down. All I could see was his 315/35/18's dissapearing in the night.

SHEESH!! :buttrock

A friend of mine has a 02 cobra, its fast, REALLY fast so I knew this wouldnt be easy. My friends cobra has a ported blower, some bolts ons and a tune and he was doing high 11's all day.

Maybe this black one had a kenny bell on it? I swear I heard him chirp into 5th gear! haha

RMS stage 1 Supercharger with water injection. Running about 8.5 pounds.

I beat like 90% of cars on the road. That cobra was silly fast!!

I doubt your friend has an 02 Cobra, they didn't make one in 02. Sounds like he has an 03/04.

As for the Cobra you raced, I would imagine he just had the basics - I/E/pulley/tune and should safely be in the 465 ish rwhp zone, with even more torque. That is going to be more than enough to hurt a supercharged e36 m3.

Sounds like a fun race, did you hear a very loud supercharger whine as he passed you?

yea it was loud, kenny bell loud. (I heard a few on the dyno)

Yea I thought the cobra started up again in 02? You guys are probably right though about it being an 03-04

Yea probably a 03-04.

I dont know, if I had to guess I would say it should do a low low 13 or maybe a high 12' with a good launch.

When my friends cobra was bone stock I could keep up with him, it was really really close on the freeway. After his mods forget about it.

If it was a KB Cobra, it would be out of sight before you got into 4th gear. He pulled only 5 cars through 2 gears - sounds like a pullied 03/04 Cobra to me. 460rwhp is enough to do that to your car which is likely right around 310-320 rwhp.

I have that setup right now.

It is a good setup but.... I have it spraying at 5 pounds, below 5 pounds you can really feel the hot air. I dont want to run it any lower, I go through the fluid fast enough as it is. The aftercooler gives me a nice perm cooling solution.

Agreed. I believe a constant nitrous trickle charge will cool the intake charge as well.

465whp easy. Put KB supercharger and it all over for 95% off all the car on this site.

There was a 03 KB cobra at the orlando speedworld drag strip that ran. That car launched crazy hard on those drag slicks. Ass end squated a crap load went through 1st gear then 2nd gear. Went for thrid and missed the gear so nose fell flat on the ground almost. He then let pretty much granny shifted :D into 3rd nailed the throttle and it the back end squated again and shot huge puff of black smoke out the back and took off. Ran a 11.98 @ around 120mph. It was pretty crazy.

For real ford really stepped it up for that model cobra.

If I wanted a bang for the buck straight line rocket I wouldnt buy any other car. Just get a cobra and own em all :)

I took my friends cobra through a twistie road or 2, it was to heavy and to hard to keep straight. Lots of fun though. :buttrock

Good race it seems like there but also the 03/04 SVT Cobra carry the Eaton supercharger bone stock...Now if he did have a 2.2 Kenne Belle supercharger but not to be rude you're gonna need bigger supercharger than RMS stage 1 but RMS does make some good S/C setups..but an average 03/04 SVT w/ Kenne Belle upgrade easily trap 11s on street tires because a bolt on + cammed Cobra can trap high 11s like nothing. But if it had lil tail like look alike thing & not a spoiler hanging in the air then thats a 03/04 then if it had regular OEM type look spoiler than thats a 01.

My old 03 Cobra with pulley, intake, exhaust, and chip hit 440rwhp/470rwtq. I wouldn't be suprised if it was just a bolt on cobra that blew you out of the water. Kenny Belle cobra would of actually been much worse I would suspect. Keep in mind though, it's still just a glorified mustang lol.

Z06. Halls balls, can tear up a twisty road, great brakes, 29mpg in cruise mode. Easy to mod.

Oh and nice death! I'd rather have your S/C'd M3 than the 03 Cobra anyday.

Well, for one I had to pay tuition, which isn't cheap. It also got like 15mpg AT BEST, and was built like any other mustang, very crappy. The interior was crappy except for the suade particion. All in all, it felt no diff from a 6cyl model minus the 4.6L / blower combo. It was def the fastest car i've ever owned, but ugh, straight line was it, just not very practicle.

Heres a dyno vid and 45-100 of it for people interested in the sort of power the 03+ model is capable of:

There was no 02 cobra. The cobra was made from 1993 to 2004 but there was no 2002 cobra and the 2000 was the cobra R, of which only 300 were made.

Depends on the mileage, other mods, etc.

My friend is selling his for 27k without the KB, 30k with it.....

It's also got suspension and exhaust mods and two sets of wheels.....

The 03/04 cobra is one of the best cars you can buy for any type of racing hands down. They are fast, easy to mod, have a nice 6 speed and a decent IRS. The handling isnt bad but can be improved easily, the acceleration and responsiveness to mods is amazing, the stock brakes, clutch and bottom end hold up great.

Once again, NO 2002 Cobra. Only the 03/04 Cobras were supercharged from the factory - came with an Eaton supercharger.

My friend and I were busy tuning my M3 when we came up to a Red 02 Cobra with a "Venms" type vanity plate, pretty loud car. He was surprised that we kept up with him, actually beat him by 1/2 a car length IIRC. Gave him a thumbs up, then we continued with the tuning :rofl

I thought from 02 cobras were supercharged. I was on the corral net and I believe they called the 02-04 cobras "terminators" because of their silly tunability

They came with forged internals, a T56 6 speed and 3.55 gears. They stock block can handle 1000 hp easily and the stock internals are good for 650 rwhp plus on boost alone. They take to nitrous really well, there are tons of chip and tuning options available.....

the 99 and 01 came with the 5 speed, an NA 4V 4.6 and I am not sure what the stock gears were. They are also a great car for racing but the 03/04 has much more potential with the stock setup...

The stock blower is very capable as well, you can port it, swap the pullies, etc.

A friend of mine has an 03 cobra. with just the simple mods, chip, pulley, intake etc. it dynoed 455 rwhp and 478 tq...and ran an 8.0 @ 96 mph in the 1/8 and 12.1 @ 118 mph 1/4. Now he has a ported blower..more tuning and minimal other mods and expects to be in the 525 rwhp range. The car is quick has instant torque.

With your mod list i saw in your link & vid looks nice actually & i notice the 2.1 60ft, yeah i can definitely tell you must of been spinning but im sure if you had slicks on at that time you could've definitely got in low 12s with no problem.

My friend in Enlgand has an Atom and becuase he knows that I'm a bimmer dude he shared his kill story with me from friday.

He said he pulled up to a light next to a Z4. The dude in the bimmer was grinnin and all that so he let him know that he wanted to race. He said he let the bimmer get about 2 car lenghts ahead then he shifted out of first into second and wipped the smirk right of the bimmer dudes face.

i had a runin w/ a cobra the other day myself...think it was a 2000 :dunno. i know it wasn't supercharged though. we had 3 good runs...each time he caught me off boost, so it seemed like we were neck and neck through 2nd, but in 3rd gear i started to walk away pretty quickly. i had a good 4 cars or so by the top of 3rd and let off.

i haven't run an 03 cobra yet. quite honestly, i'm a bit intimidated by them despite the fact that i shouldn't have a problem keeping up with one...or, if i'm lucky, walk away from one.
